Chapter 339: 0339 is not completely hopeless_1

He could see Ellen Young playing with Blackie in the house, finally engaging in some behaviors that fit her age.

It wasn’t the usual bland expression she displayed, as if even the sky falling down wouldn’t provoke the slightest emotion from her.

"Why did I come back? Do you really need me for your work, Dad?"

He smirked slightly, "I’ve already told you I’m very busy over here."

"Busy?"

Taylor Smith raised his voice a bit, "What could possibly be keeping you so busy over there? I could send someone randomly and they’d be more attentive than you. You were just fooling me with what you said before. Tell me the truth, are you staying there because of Ellen Young?"

Ruffy Smith’s eyes dimmed a bit, "Yes."

Now he admitted it without any hesitation.

Taylor Smith wasn’t surprised to hear this answer, "I knew it!"

No wonder he hadn’t found a girlfriend for so many years, turning down all the blind dates arranged by the family.

A while back when he went abroad, upon his return there was a period when he was not quite himself. At that time, Taylor Smith suspected that he might have suffered some sort of emotional trauma overseas.

But considering his thick-skinned nature, it seemed unlikely.

Years passed without any development, and now that Ellen Young had retired, Ruffy Smith stayed in the countryside and didn’t return, as clear as the intent of Sima Zhao to everyone.

Taylor Smith had guessed as much at the time, but he hadn’t expected his father to be fooling him.

And he dared to say he didn’t recognize her.

Though busy with work and not dwelling much on Ruffy Smith’s affairs, Taylor knew full well that Ellen Young had once taught Ruffy for a while, and Ruffy’s claim of not knowing her was suspect from the start.

"What do you know that I don’t?"

Ruffy Smith retorted, touching his cheek with the tip of his tongue, "When I have time, I’ll come back. You are in good health now, and I’m busy with my own career. Isn’t it better for us to not bother each other?"

"But you are twenty-eight now."

Taylor Smith emphasized with earnest concern, "I don’t mind that, but your mother... it’s difficult for me to explain to her."

Ruffy Smith was visibly impatient, "Why bother with her?"

Knowing what he was impatient about, Taylor Smith didn’t press further, only continuing, "Let’s not talk about other things. Your birthday is coming up, won’t you come back?"

"No, thank you."

Ruffy Smith had already made plans for his birthday this year, "I’ll stay here."

"..."

Taylor Smith said nothing more but softly concluded the conversation with an ’okay’ and laughed to himself after hanging up.

Bewitched.

Of all people to fall for, he had to choose the toughest nut to crack.

He did have guts.

Thinking of this, Taylor Smith felt somewhat proud of his son on the inside. To pick a challenge, he chose the hardest one – remarkable indeed.

After hanging up on Taylor Smith, Ruffy Smith looked out the window. Dusk was setting in, and it was getting very late, a white light lit up in Ellen Young’s courtyard.

He saw Ellen Young pick up Blackie, letting the dog sprawl on its back in her hands to be petted. Her silhouette was slightly blurred, only a rough outline was visible, but it had a softness that hadn’t been there before.

The small courtyard lacked people, yet it had a warmth that was seldom seen before.

That faint warmth traveled along the daytime light to Ruffy Smith, stirring something inside him. He faintly moved his lips, as if murmuring to himself.

"Heartless girl, why can’t you see just how good I am to you?"

Perhaps she saw it but didn’t want to respond.

In that statement lay a slight hint of regret.

The road ahead is long and arduous, but it’s not entirely hopeless, is it?
