Chapter 1016: Chapter 908 Preparing to Close the Net

This General Election had been troubled from the start.

Although the election was still underway and the results not yet out, the major media outlets had already split into opposing camps and begun battling it out!

Some media reported that Yanukovych’s lead was quite large, and on-site interviews from the voting scene indicated that roughly seven or eight out of ten voters cast their ballots for Yanukovych.

They stated this was in line with reality since Yanukovych had been leading ever since Yushchenko’s sexual assault scandal broke, and he had never fallen behind since!

Moreover, Yanukovych had always had a high level of support, being the most popular choice with no close second! Now, this result was the will of the people, and he would secure a crushing victory.

Yet other media outlets claimed there were significant problems with this election, accusing someone of cheating!

One outlet even released a "secretly filmed" video from a certain polling area, shot by irregular means.

The video showed the area was in complete disarray, with individuals registering dozens, even hundreds of votes at once, blatantly committing fraud.

Naturally, the names on these fake ballots were all "Yanukovych"...

......

This report caused a huge uproar.

Yushchenko’s supporters were the first to jump out. In interviews, they angrily claimed that Yanukovych, representing the "old bureaucracy," was committing "theft and stealing"!

In this regard, Yanukovych and his ilk had a terrible precedent; for example, the recent so-called scandal involving Yushchenko was engineered by Yanukovych to smear his rival.

And now, Yushchenko’s ongoing participation in the final stages of the election had already proven his innocence!

If there hadn’t been any fraud in the election, Yushchenko would surely have won in the end.

After all, Yushchenko had the most advanced, most democratic, and freest ideas, representing the will of the people—how could he possibly lose the election?

If the result came out and Yushchenko won, it would be a victory for the people of the entire country, signifying that Ukraine would move towards true democracy and freedom, as well as becoming wealthier and stronger!

But if Yushchenko lost, it would mean that Yanukovych’s crowd of old bureaucrats couldn’t accept defeat and were obstructing the country’s progress.

Those who supported Yushchenko would then make their angry voices heard, fighting for the victory that belonged to them!

As for the means of making their voices heard, well, that left a lot of room for imagination, and they didn’t exclude taking any sort of measures!

......

The media in support of Yanukovych was of course not willing to show weakness and immediately produced solid evidence proving that the outlet which released the so-called secret video was the one that had falsified facts.

Because the polling station in the video didn’t actually exist!

It was revealed by insiders that the media outlet that leaked the video had long been bought by a certain consortium backing Yushchenko, continuously blowing his trumpet.

This time they even went as far as to fabricate facts, setting up a fake polling station with a bunch of "actors" to play a drama to smear Yanukovych and achieve their ulterior motives!

Why would they resort to such a despicable tactic?

Clearly, Yushchenko and his allies knew they were bound to lose in the election, so they were panicking!

They wanted to defame the legitimacy of this General Election by stirring up the public.

Both sides’ media, standing firm on their own positions, started a war of words, reflecting just how intense this General Election really was.

Yushchenko and the forces behind him were definitely unwilling to accept defeat. They knew full well that if they didn’t succeed this time, once Yanukovych took office, many would face a "purge"!

This was a matter affecting their wealth and their lives, so of course, they would make every possible effort to fight for victory.

......

Both sides were in turmoil over whether there had been fraud in the election and which side was committing it.

With the results of the election not yet out, tensions were escalating to the point of potentially causing serious disturbances.

The sitting president, Gu Qima, couldn’t sit still any longer and had to step in to reassure both sides.

On the Nationwide TV station’s Evening News program, Gu Qima solemnly announced to the people:

"Given some of the issues that have arisen in the election" which have caused a great reaction and a very bad influence on society.

Therefore, after consultation between the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Rada, it was decided to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate various problems that have occurred in the election.

To avoid interference from any parties, the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Rada have jointly authorized the independent prosecutor to investigate any department and any person if needed!

The departments and individuals involved must also unconditionally cooperate with the prosecutor in any form of investigation...

This announcement sounded good on the surface, as if it were serious.

But when you think about it, it’s useless!

Not to mention, it’s uncertain who could serve as this so-called independent prosecutor and command everyone’s confidence.

Even with a suitable candidate selected, by the time they assembled a team, began the investigation, collected testimonial and physical evidence, and validated everything...

This whole process would take so long; the next General Election would be upon us by then...

In other words, the investigation was purely superficial, a means to placate everyone, ultimately serving no real purpose.

However, understanding Gu Qima’s stance was not hard; after all, he was about to leave office, and the only priority was to avoid chaos in his final days.
