Chapter 18: The Terrifying Fish Man Mystical Spirit
Qin Ziyu, Wang Lian, Lu Teng, Gongsun Zhuo, Hua Yun, and Hua Cai dismounted from their Ghost-Headed Sheep, each commanding their two Ghost-Headed Sheep to move toward the pool. The group stayed far behind, maintaining a considerable distance from the water.
Chen Guan also directed the two Ghost-Headed Sheep that Qin Ziyu had given him to follow the herd forward.
The moment the lead Ghost-Headed Sheep’s front hoof stepped into the water, the Fish Man Mystical Spirit, who had been sitting there with eyes closed, suddenly opened his eyes.
His eyes resembled bleached bones—devoid of any crystal-clear luster, presenting a dull grayish-white, a true dead fish stare.
Splash!
The Fish Man shot up to full height and with a mighty leap broke through the water’s surface. One hand supported the bone bowl, while the other gripped that strange weapon. His webbed feet stomped on the water’s surface, using the water’s force to launch himself up again. The weapon in his hand thrust toward the head of the lead Ghost-Headed Sheep.
The lead Ghost-Headed Sheep was Qin Ziyu’s pet. Under his control, the sheep raised its front hoof high, then lowered its head and charged forward fiercely. The two curved, blade-like horns on its head slammed hard into the flying Fish Man.
A sinister smile appeared at the corner of the Fish Man’s mouth. The speed of the strange weapon in his hand suddenly surged, forcibly stabbing clean through the Ghost-Headed Sheep’s skull.
Just as the sheep collapsed to the ground, one of its fish-scale-covered legs swiftly lifted and kicked three times in rapid succession, smashing the skulls of the three Ghost-Headed Sheep. Red and white matter sprayed everywhere.
One Ghost-Headed Sheep, taking advantage of the chaos, charged directly in front of the Fish Man Mystical Spirit and rammed its horns against him, but the Fish Man opened his fish mouth wide and swallowed the sheep’s head in one bite, snapping it off.The headless sheep’s body sprayed blood from its broken neck, spun around like a headless fly, then crashed to the ground with a thud, twitching a few times before falling silent.
The Fish Man Mystical Spirit feasted on the sheep’s head as he rampaged, causing cold sweat to break out on the onlookers’ backs, a chill shooting straight to their brains.
Wang Lian and the others had clearly underestimated the terror of the Fish Man Mystical Spirit. In this situation, not being killed by him was already a huge blessing, let alone killing him.
In just a moment, all the Ghost-Headed Sheep pets they had sent were slain by the Fish Man Mystical Spirit. From start to finish, the Fish Man had only used one hand for the killing; the other hand never lowered the bone bowl it held.
Chen Guan had been retreating since earlier. He didn’t dare to turn and run but cautiously backed away while watching the battlefield. The Fish Man Mystical Spirit was too brutal; even Rouge might not stand a chance.
“No need to run. The Fish Man Mystical Spirit won’t leave near the pool,” Hua Yun, one of the twins, saw Chen Guan had already retreated more than ten meters and turned to him with a smile.
Bang!
Suddenly, a burst of blood bloomed from Hua Yun’s forehead, golden sharp spikes piercing through her glabella.
Hua Yun’s eyes widened, pupils dilated, limbs twitching. It seemed she wanted to turn and see what had happened, but she was powerless.
Behind her stood the Fish Man Mystical Spirit, two heads taller than her, a fishy grin spreading across his face. He violently withdrew the strange weapon that had pierced Hua Yun’s skull.
Hua Yun’s body collapsed to the ground instantly, already a corpse.
“Sister!” Hua Cai let out a heart-wrenching scream and then frantically charged toward the Fish Man Mystical Spirit.
“Don’t go! Run!” The others, unlike her, didn’t act irrationally and turned to flee immediately.
When they came last time, the situation was completely different; none expected it to escalate like this.
Chen Guan ran the fastest. He had already retreated more than ten meters ahead of Lu Teng and the others and now took the lead, desperately heading back the way they came.
The Fish Man sneered as he watched them flee. Suddenly, he whipped the strange weapon in his hand out violently.
The group heard a whooshing sound behind them and were startled. Before they could turn to look, the strange weapon flashed past their heads, the strong wind it brought blowing their hair wildly.
But the weapon was still far from them and wouldn’t cause injury.
Just as they were relieved, the weapon struck the mountainside, followed by a rumbling sound as part of the cliff collapsed. A massive boulder slid down and crashed heavily to the ground, shaking the earth twice.
Chen Guan immediately sensed something was terribly wrong because the boulder had fallen right at the narrow passage where they had passed through the wall.
He instinctively looked back and saw the Fish Man’s dagger-like claw stabbing into Hua Cai’s fontanel, then twisting atop her head, forcibly ripping off the skullcap.
Chen Guan’s heart shook. If they couldn’t escape this death valley, their fate would likely be no better than the two sisters, Hua Yun and Hua Cai.
What you fear comes true. Before they even reached the cliff, they saw the entrance was completely blocked by the fallen boulder.
Judging by the boulder’s size, it must weigh over ten tons—far beyond what they could move.
Their faces turned pale. Even more despairing was the sound of footsteps from the flower forest behind. Turning around, they saw the Fish Man holding the bone bowl in one hand, stepping closer.
He seemed to know they couldn’t escape, walking slowly. His footsteps sounded like the tolling of the death bell, each step pressing on Chen Guan’s heart, making it pound fiercely while nearly suffocating him.
“There’s nowhere left to retreat. We have to fight with everything we’ve got,” Qin Ziyu said, eyes fixed on the Fish Man as he slowly drew the matching sword at his waist.
The sword was clearly a secret treasure, likely brought in from outside by Qin Ziyu. It was unknown what grade or quality it was, but it probably wasn’t very high.
High-grade secret treasures require primordial energy to activate. If the level is too low and the total energy insufficient, it’s difficult to unleash the true power of such treasures. Thus, treasures matching the user’s level are most practical.
Lu Teng, Gongsun Zhuo, and Wang Lian pushed the giant boulder a few times, but it didn’t budge. Knowing escape was impossible, they could only fight desperately.
They summoned all the pets they could—also Ghost-Headed Sheep—and each drew their secret treasures, mostly family-prepared.
Chen Guan knew this wasn’t the time to hide anything and summoned Rouge as well, saying, “You are all the academy’s prodigies, top talents with unmatched gifts and abilities. Calling you the chosen of heaven isn’t an exaggeration. As long as we unite, killing one Mystical Spirit shouldn’t be difficult. Besides, the highest-level Mystical Spirit on this island is only level ten, not much stronger than us.”
While speaking, Chen Guan secretly activated the Cheerleader’s Soul, hoping to ignite their potential.
After hearing Chen Guan’s words, Lu Teng, Gongsun Zhuo, and Wang Lian’s spirits visibly lifted. Chen Guan himself could see that the Cheerleader’s Soul had some effect, though he wasn’t sure how much.
His gaze fell on Qin Ziyu, and Chen Guan was slightly startled. Qin Ziyu showed no sign of change; his complexion and spirit remained unchanged, seemingly unaffected by the Cheerleader’s Soul.
