Beast God -
Chapter 16: Pet Charm
Chen Guan was slightly taken aback. This wasn't going according to the script he had envisioned. He had originally thought that after hearing about his talent, Qin Ziyu and the others would look down on him, giving him an excuse to leave.
Skeptical, Chen Guan glanced at Qin Ziyu and the group. Qin Ziyu shrugged and said, "Don't worry. Just follow us and do what you can. Leave the rest to us."
The others also expressed goodwill and sympathy toward Chen Guan, leaving him momentarily stunned. The words "I want to leave and go solo" lingered on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't bring himself to say them.
After reconsidering, he realized this might not be a bad thing. The highest-level Mystical Spirits on the island were only Level 10. Without higher-level Mystical Spirits, there would be no higher-level Secret Techniques, making it impossible to complete the Second Awakening. No matter how strong practitioners became, they would be stuck at Level 10 with no further progress.
Upon reaching Level 10, practitioners had to undergo a Second Awakening to continue leveling up. This required both a Level 10+ Mystical Spirit and a corresponding Secret Technique—neither could be omitted.
The group of practitioners that Old Bird belonged to had been here for a year, yet none had broken through Level 10 for this very reason. Some might have brought advanced Secret Techniques with them, but without high-level Mystical Spirits, Second Awakening remained impossible—an unsolvable problem on the island.
Ji Nanhong's true motive for gathering so many elites to fight various bosses was likely to search for Level 10+ Mystical Spirits to complete her Second Awakening.
Reaching Level 10 was inevitable, but individual strength had its limits. Even if Level 10+ Mystical Spirits existed on the island, they were likely boss-tier entities. Taking them down alone would be extremely difficult, making teamwork the optimal approach. Moreover, Chen Guan’s innate talent worked best in group battles.
Chen Guan wasn’t in a hurry to showcase his abilities yet. He needed to first assess Qin Ziyu and the others’ character. Even if he had no teammates, he had no intention of teaming up with someone like Old Bird.
When Qin Ziyu and the others heard about the various Spirit-Eyed Peacocks in Peacock Forest, they grew highly interested and decided to bring Chen Guan along to hunt them. From their conversation, Chen Guan learned that the group had already reached Level 6, with Qin Ziyu at Level 7—higher than Chen Guan himself. Aside from their superior innate talents, their families had prepared many First Awakening items for them in advance, such as Secret Techniques and treasures.
If not for the difficulty of bringing Mystical Spirit pets along, they might have been even higher-leveled.
Qin Ziyu, in particular, came from the Qin Clan—descendants of the Ten Heavenly Kings. For over 800 years, the Qin Clan had flourished, making them one of the Ten Great Families of Shenzhou. Even if Qin Ziyu wasn’t from the main lineage, he undoubtedly had access to abundant resources. Even without bringing peerless technique cores or skill cores, he likely possessed rare, top-tier Secret Techniques and skills. Combined with his outstanding talent and ability, his achievements were hardly surprising.
Though Lu Teng, Gongsun Zhuo, Wang Lian, Hua Yun, and Hua Cai didn’t come from as prestigious backgrounds as Qin Ziyu, they had still brought plenty of valuable items—unlike Chen Guan, who arrived empty-handed with only Warring States by his side.
Chen Guan hadn’t prepared much primarily due to his family circumstances. Ordinary families couldn’t obtain good Secret Techniques or skills, and Chen Guan refused to settle for inferior ones. He had originally planned to take it slow and steady after entering the Blessed Land, never expecting such a turn of events.
As they approached Peacock Forest, Qin Ziyu and the others summoned their pets—uniformly Ghost-Headed Sheep, with Qin Ziyu’s being a rare-quality variant.
Ghost-Headed Sheep were at least Level 5, with rare-quality ones reaching Level 7. The fact that they had hunted so many proved Qin Ziyu’s group was already formidable in combat.
"Chen Guan, I have extra Ghost-Headed Sheep pets. Take them for now and return them once you find something better," Qin Ziyu said, noticing Chen Guan only had a Five-Red Dog beside him. Without hesitation, he transferred two Ghost-Headed Sheep pets to Chen Guan.
Chen Guan hesitated briefly but accepted them without comment. He was surprised—how had they obtained so many Ghost-Headed Sheep pets? Qin Ziyu giving him two didn’t mean he only had two; it was because practitioners below Level 10 could only summon two Mystical Spirit pets at once. Having more was pointless.
Wang Lian, sharp-minded, noticed Chen Guan’s expression and guessed his thoughts. Smiling, she explained, "Ziyu’s innate talent is Pet Charm. Any Mystical Spirit he kills has a much higher chance of becoming a pet. That’s how we got so many Ghost-Headed Sheep."
Chen Guan couldn’t help but glance at Qin Ziyu. Innate talents were highly private—most practitioners guarded them as their greatest secret. Qin Ziyu’s was especially rare and valuable, yet he had revealed it openly.
Then again, Qin Ziyu was strong enough and came from a powerful background. Others wouldn’t dare scheme against him. Knowing his talent would only make them eager to team up, which worked in his favor.
Each of them mounted a Ghost-Headed Sheep—Chen Guan included. Riding wasn’t difficult, as the academy offered riding lessons. They summoned another Ghost-Headed Sheep each to scout ahead.
Once inside Peacock Forest, whenever they encountered Spirit-Eyed Peacocks, the Ghost-Headed Sheep would swarm and kill them without the group needing to lift a finger. However, Qin Ziyu always delivered the final blow.
His Pet Charm talent proved extraordinary. Chen Guan had killed many Spirit-Eyed Peacocks before without obtaining a single pet, yet after just over a dozen kills, Qin Ziyu’s group had already tamed a blue Spirit-Eyed Peacock, which merged into Qin Ziyu’s body.
"The skills and talents aren’t practical. Useless. Anyone want it?" After checking the peacock’s stats, Qin Ziyu displayed its attributes openly.
After reviewing the information, everyone shook their heads—it truly wasn’t useful, inferior to the versatile Ghost-Headed Sheep.
"Killing Spirit-Eyed Peacocks is pointless. Let’s go somewhere else," Qin Ziyu declared, unwilling to waste time here.
"We’ve leveled up quite a bit these past few days and have plenty of pets. Why not check out that spring again?" Wang Lian suddenly suggested.
At her words, Qin Ziyu’s eyes lit up, and Hua Yun and Hua Cai agreed enthusiastically.
Gongsun Zhuo, however, frowned. "That place is too dangerous. We should wait until we’re all Level 10."
"We could wait before, but now we know there are others here—people who arrived a year earlier than us. Delaying might lead to complications," Wang Lian countered.
"It’s worth a try. We can test the waters with our pets first. If things go south, we retreat. That thing can’t leave the spring anyway," Lu Teng added.
After listening for a while, Chen Guan finally understood what they were discussing.
