Chapter 407: Blinding Trick
Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Blinding Trick
In the dead of night, the vast ocean beyond the window was tranquil and silent.
Lu Xining had changed into clothing both comfortable and suited for movement. She hadn’t applied any makeup and appeared barefaced, her cool features now carrying a pristine and unadorned charm, like water blooming a lotus—refreshing and captivating.
To avoid attracting attention, Cheng Cang had already gone ahead carrying the recreated fingerprint gloves, heading to the morgue at the bottom of the ship’s hold.
By leveraging the beauty strategically nurtured by Meng Lai and his men, he obtained key information, confirming that Meng Lai preferred to use his thumb for fingerprint setups.
Just to err on the side of caution, however, Cheng Cang still brought along the Danrus fingerprint gloves sent by Shang Lvxing.
At the agreed-upon time, Lu Xining and Shang Lvxing simultaneously opened their room doors. The man’s eyes had traces of redness, as though he had been "moved" by something prior.
She wasn’t too interested in other people’s private affairs.
Lu Xining nodded to him and said, "Let’s go. Let’s see if we can unlock the ’Deep-Sea Gemstone.’"
The two walked one behind the other in the direction of the elevator.
Shang Lvxing stared at the back of the resilient woman walking ahead with firm steps, silently reciting her name in his heart, along with the words he’d never formally expressed.
...Thank you and Nuonuo, for giving warmth to my younger brother.
Both were dressed in black tonight—a perfect choice for nighttime operations.
During the day, the guests had shown considerable interest in the "Deep-Sea Gemstone," but as night approached, thoughts of the mishap involving Lott made them reluctant to linger in the banquet hall for long; they retreated to the ship’s cabin suites to rest.
The banquet hall was now near-deserted, with only patrolling bodyguards—and the sole exceptions, Lu Xining and Shang Lvxing.
Because of Lott’s earlier statements, the bodyguards didn’t issue any warnings when someone approached the display case holding the "Deep-Sea Gemstone." Still, someone silently relayed the information to Yilijite and his team.
Yilijite quickly brought up the banquet hall’s surveillance footage and, seeing Lu Xining and Shang Lvxing, raised an intrigued eyebrow.
"Quick! Notify Meng Lai and Danrus—the Chu Family’s granddaughter is preparing to unlock the ’Deep-Sea Gemstone’!"
Unfortunately, of the four leading individuals, the most leisurely and prone to delays, Rexiva, was already at their secret base. Yilijite waited for ages yet neither Meng Lai nor Danrus appeared.
"Where are they?" Yilijite demanded of the bodyguard who returned, unable to grasp why they were taking so long.
The bodyguard frowned in frustration, replying, "Mr. Yilijite, Mr. Meng Lai and Mr. Danrus aren’t in their quarters. I’ve instructed the ship’s crew to monitor their activities and locations—we’ll find them soon."
"Those two—off chasing women again?" Yilijite scowled. Once night fell, the pair loved to lounge amidst the throng of female company.
Rexiva stood and said, "I’ll head to the beauty den to check. You keep an eye on that woman."
The "woman" he referred to was Lu Xining. At the moment, she and Shang Lvxing were both standing beside the display case for the "Deep-Sea Gemstone."
Bathed in the light from spotlights surrounding them and the strategically placed overhead beams, the two carefully studied the gemstone before them.
Both were well aware that their appearance in the banquet hall placed them squarely within Yilijite and his team’s surveillance.
But tonight, Lu Xining fully intended this.
Her aim was to divert all attention away so that Cheng Cang could successfully complete the task she’d assigned him.
The standout element of Shang Lvxing’s attire tonight was his gold-rimmed glasses.
A high-tech pair capable of transmitting what he saw to others—though outwardly indistinguishable from ordinary glasses.
Meanwhile, Haozi sat before a computer, watching the footage transmitted from the glasses.
Shang Lvxing had one ear accessorized with a miniature earbud.
Haozi: "Bro, unlocking this glass display case isn’t too difficult. You just need to..."
As Haozi explained the specifics, Lu Xining’s fingers were methodically feeling their way across the glass case, uncovering subtle patterns undetectable to the naked eye.
She glanced briefly at the silent man across from her, her eyes shifting pointedly over his glasses and earbud, seeing through but saying nothing.
While Shang Lvxing noted the decryption method, Lu Xining’s tactile exploration uncovered a hidden latch. The moment she pressed it, a password lock extended outward from within the display case.
It was the first time she’d seen such a setup—the lock housed within the display case itself.
Even if one knew the password, they couldn’t physically interact with the lock to release it, rendering the glass case unhackable, or potentially triggering hidden dangers below.
"Wait." Shang Lvxing halted her from continuing.
Following Haozi’s guidance, he discovered a tiny gap at the base and informed Lu Xining, "There’s a small opening here. We’ll need the right tool to insert into it—that should unlock the outer layer of glass."
Lu Xining nodded and added, "I suspect this outer display case is just a decoy."
"Given that the password lock appears inside, without any visible points of interaction, it’s likely meant to secure not the outer case, but what lies beneath."
The base of the glass display case was lined with a thick layer of black velvet, enhancing the gemstone’s luminous clarity above.
Every refracted ray of light emanated brilliance in a unique pattern.
"Bro, I completely agree with Sister Ning’s theory. Be careful—this type of arrangement is commonly used by foreign underground ’green organizations,’ and often entails... explosive devices!"
Upon Haozi’s grave warning, Shang Lvxing immediately relayed the message to Lu Xining. Seeing her unsurprised reaction to this live translation, he suggested thoughtfully, "I’ve got an extra earbud here. How about you wear it? Haozi..."
"No need. It’s unnecessary," Lu Xining replied swiftly. Her tone hinted at an unmistakable rejection of hearing Haozi’s voice.
Her intended focus was on analyzing the glass mechanism’s intricacies. Any updates Haozi found could simply be passed to Shang Lvxing for greater efficiency.
But then, she heard a faint catch in someone’s breath.
Glancing upward, her gaze met Shang Lvxing’s eyes, steady but tinged with complication. She added, "It doesn’t matter who wears it; you’re wearing it now, and that’s fine."
Shang Lvxing’s expression grew intricate. "...Alright."
On the other end of the earbud, Haozi felt his heart tighten, rattled by Lu Xining’s curt rejection. A bitter smile tugged at his lips.
He recalled how she’d previously reached out to him as her first choice whenever encountering trouble she couldn’t solve.
But now, despite knowing he was actively in contact with her companion, she refused to wear the other earbud for direct communication. It gave Haozi the unsettling feeling of being gradually edged out of her life.
In a subdued tone, Haozi muttered, "Bro, do you think Sister Ning is..."
