Chapter 69: Adventurers Guild

After Dapper told the women his plans, he left home and headed to the Adventurer’s Guild in Epathe. The building was a large building made with large, neatly carved stones. From the appearance of the building, it had existed for over five hundred years and had withstood the test of time.

Dapper entered the guild. He was met with a familiar odor of bodily sweat. The air was thick and cold due to the numerous cooling systems inside the guild. However, the odor was still somewhat annoying. The body odor of adventurers. Due to some not bathing for days or being soaked in monster blood, they emitted a very pungent odor most of the time.

"Oi, you’ve got quite a big kill. I’m jealous of you!" Some adventurers hailed as another man entered the guild, holding what looked like the head of a green monster.

"Those goblins were pretty easy to kill. After all, they were all Rank 1. Thank goodness I didn’t have enough money to hire other adventurers, hehe," the man with the goblin heads laughed mischievously as he dropped the heads at one of the receptionist desks. It wasn’t new for greedy adventurers to take missions solo.

"Isn’t that the group of goblins that was terrorizing a village on the outskirts?" another voice asked.

"Yes."

"What are you going to do with the heads after using them as proof?"

"Uh, I met some Beastkins on the way who said they were going to buy the heads from me. I think they wanted to eat them."

Dapper’s face twisted in disgust upon hearing what the adventurers were saying. It wasn’t his first time coming here, he had once come to buy an Impotence potion after his usual supplier ran out of stock.

’These people eat goblins but not snakes? Anyways, it’s the Beastkins eating the goblins, but still...’ Dapper walked toward another receptionist located deeper inside the guild.

There were many receptionists who attended to adventurers. However, adventurers could decide whether or not they wanted to trade with a particular receptionist, as the buying rates were different. Since the Adventurer’s Guild didn’t only focus on missions, they also specialized in buying items from adventurers. The Guild was headed by a single person, but the receptionists were usually hired by mages under the Guild Master, so there were always price differences.

Dapper noticed that no one was approaching a particular receptionist, and others were even queueing for the remaining ones.

Dapper decided to walk over. Getting closer, he saw her face clearly. She was a demi-human, a dark elf slumped over her desk, looking extremely tired.

"Welcome, how may I help you? Let me guess, you’re new here," she asked, a hint of surprise flashing on her face as she sat up. She had three earrings on each of her elongated ears, a nose ring, and her black hair was tied into a ponytail, accentuating her sharp jawline and eyebrows.

"Yeah, I’m kinda new here, but this isn’t my first time coming. I want to register as an adventurer," Dapper said.

"Ugh. I’d advise you to register over there. Let me go back to sleep," the dark elf said, pointing toward another receptionist as she tried to rest her head again.

"Wait! Why don’t you want to do anything? Aren’t you a receptionist?" Dapper asked, halting her.

"Such a bummer..." the elf muttered under her breath. "See, our prices are overpriced, you know? The registration fee is three times that of the others. We also buy loot at a much lower rate. Sure, we pay adventurers what their mission is worth, but the tax we take is higher than what the others remove. Where do you think the adventurers will go?" the dark elf asked, lightly poking Dapper in the chest with her finger.

"Why is that though?" Dapper asked again. The elf looked even more frustrated now. She clearly wanted to chase him away, but couldn’t because of the Guild’s strict customer service policy.

"The person that hired me is super greedy. Even though the Guild Master told him many times to lower the pricing, he didn’t listen. The Guild Master couldn’t do anything since the guy wasn’t breaking any rules. He pays his dues. The Guild Master even tried to buy the space from him, but the guy placed such an outrageous price on it that he scared off every potential buyer. Since he’s not breaking any rules, nothing can be done. Also, this is the easiest job I’ve had. I sleep all day and still get paid," the dark elf said and then waved Dapper away lazily as she tried to return to her nap.

"Hey! I’m not done yet!" Dapper said.

’What’s this boy’s deal?’ the elf thought inwardly, gritting her teeth.

"I told you, I want to register as an adventurer."

"It costs seven hundred and fifty Yexen," the elf replied flatly.

"Okay," Dapper said, pulling out the exact amount from his wallet and handing it over.

"You’re actually going to pay that ridiculous amount?!" the elf asked, scowling.

"Yes."

"..."

The dark elf gritted her teeth in frustration. She stood up from her seat. She was around five feet tall, shorter than Dapper expected, which made him think she was a hybrid like Elena, or that one of her ancestors was human. Crossbreeding between elves and humans had caused height inconsistencies among elves. Just like humans, elves now varied in size, some even being midgets, which continued to annoy purist elves who resented humans for tainting their once-towering physiques.

"What’s your name, your age, your ID, your..." The elf began bombarding Dapper with questions, most of which were irrelevant to the process, her tone sharp with irritation.

’Is it safe showing her my ID? I don’t want to cause a scene. But adventurers aren’t like normal people, they probably wouldn’t care anyway,’ Dapper thought, before handing over his ID.

"Dapper Freemanu–uh," the elf squinted, struggling to pronounce his name.

"You humans love using names that are hard to pronounce!" she muttered, but Dapper noticed she didn’t react oddly to his surname.

’Thank goodness. She doesn’t seem to care. Maybe she doesn’t even know about the Freemans.’

"You say human names are hard, but you elves use weird names like Reyzorwyn!" Dapper folded his arms and pouted.

The elf fumed and walked off. Dapper sat down on a small concrete bench near her desk and waited.

"Oi, I saw you arguing with that crazy elf. You’ve got some balls. And you even paid triple? Aren’t you a damn idiot?"

Dapper looked up to see a burly man standing in front of him. He was wearing rusted gear from top to bottom, his beard full of crumbs. As he spoke, Dapper could see his half-rotten teeth.

"What do you mean by ’crazy elf’?" Dapper asked.

"I’m just saying, people avoid her not just because her prices are steep. Some adventurers in a rush don’t mind overpaying. But that elf hates being disturbed, and strange things happen to anyone who bothers her. Honestly, I’m surprised you’re still sitting here. Maybe she’s in a good mood today. Just thought I’d warn ya," the burly man said.

"Wait. Tell me more, I’ll give you one hundred Yexen," Dapper said, pulling out a crisp note. The man’s eyes gleamed with greedy interest.

"You see, that elf’s evil. Anyone who disturbs her ends up mad. Like, just a few days ago, this rich adventurer tried to sell his loot to her and ran off screaming, she didn’t even get up from her seat. Some people go crazy, cry for no reason. Some claim they see the ghosts of monsters they killed. And the Guild Master couldn’t blame her because no Mana radiated from her, meaning she didn’t use any magic. No one could prove she did anything. That’s why everyone steers clear of her," the man explained, his eyes still locked on the money.

Dapper gave him the Yexen as promised and watched him run out in excitement.

"Oi! Let’s go get some booze!"

’So the elf and her boss are weirdos... but she really intrigues me. What was that guy even talking about? Or was it all just some nonsense?’

Not long after, the elf returned, murmuring under her breath.

"Hey, here’s your Adventurer’s Card. You’ll need to wait twenty-four hours before it activates. And don’t ever disturb me again," she said, turning to walk away. But Dapper suddenly grabbed her wrist.

"What did you just do?" the elf snapped, turning with a dark expression. Her face was serious and bloodlust surged from her, wrapping around Dapper like a fog.

A flood of system notifications appeared before Dapper’s eyes. At that moment, he realized the burly man hadn’t been lying.

Dapper narrowed his eyes and tightened his grip on her wrist.

"Yo, what was that? Are you trying to hit me with some weird skill? I heard this isn’t the first time it’s happened. So it is a skill, huh? Must be some sneaky type of system. I think I’ll report this to the Guild Master," Dapper said, pretending to drag her with him.

"W-Wait! Please! Don’t tell the Guild Master! I’ll lose my job or worse, be charged for breaking guild rules!" the dark elf pleaded.

A smirk crept onto Dapper’s face.

It was time to teach the snobby elf a little lesson.
