Chapter 1240: Chapter 1259: Provocation

Jiang Yang really had two different faces, one in front of this woman and another in front of his elder sister. He truly excelled at pretense. These two months had been nothing but a battle of wits, a clash of titans. As soon as his elder sister returned, he immediately transformed into a pitifully lovable little creature.

She shouldn’t have been soft-hearted in the first place.

Zhuanzhuan was a little regretful inside. After all, it was the first time that someone had placed her above all others, and that someone had been her big sister.

"Sister, I’m back," Zhuanzhuan said, eyes carefully watching Nan Fei, her face a mix of unease, guilt, and concern. "Sister, are you okay? I heard you were hospitalized."

Nan Fei bit her lip, wanting to say something, but because Leng Ran was there, it was inconvenient to speak up, so she swallowed her words back.

The atmosphere in the living room became a bit stiff in an instant.

Leng Ran glanced between Zhuanzhuan and Nan Fei, seemingly finding something amusing, and couldn’t help but laugh.

"Nan Fei, I’ve come to visit you!" Holding gifts and nutritional products, Leng Ran set them on the coffee table and smiled, "Won’t you invite me to sit?"

"Please sit," said Nan Fei, who composed herself and, with the dignity of a hostess, took a seat on the central single-seater sofa. She smiled at Leng Ran, her face betraying no signs of irregularity, though her cold, distant demeanor was unmistakably conveyed.

Back in high school, although Nan Fei and Leng Ran had not been particularly close, their relationship had definitely not been as formally distant as it was now—this was all just superficial civility.

Leng Ran chuckled at herself, then sat down beside Nan Fei’s right hand. She always pondered how much she had changed, how the current Leng Ran was no longer the same as before. But it wasn’t just her who had changed; Nan Fei had changed, and even He Shasha had changed.

"Isn’t Sha Sha here? I heard she was living with you."

"She has a room here and comes to stay occasionally," replied Nan Fei, noting that the He Family also had a house in Imperial City.

"Oh!" Leng Ran nodded, as if she had just noticed Zhuanzhuan, arrogantly urging, "Zhuanzhuan, take a seat! Why stand there looking silly?"

Nan Fei’s complexion darkened. Even if she had fallen out with Zhuanzhuan, it wasn’t Leng Ran’s place to meddle. Although Leng Ran’s behavior was faultless, it still made people uncomfortable.

A flicker of murderous intent sparked in Zhuanzhuan’s downcast eyes. She was willing to be humble before her sister, but what business was it of Leng Ran?

"Zhuanzhuan, take a seat! Don’t let an outsider see a farce," Nan Fei said bluntly.

Leng Ran’s brow furrowed and surprise flashed across her face. She was almost amused to annoyance. What was this pointed attitude for? Wasn’t it all for the sake of Nan Fei herself? Did she think she was unaware that during Nan Fei’s absence, Jiang Zhuanzhuan had been plotting against Jiang Yang?

Though she had not yet found out the reason, she knew the situation was correct.

"You..." Leng Ran said, sounding aggrieved, "Nan Fei, we’re old classmates, aren’t we? Is this how you treat an old classmate? I came here with good intentions; do you even know what she has done to your brother?"

"Heh heh..." Zhuanzhuan sneered, flashing Leng Ran a defiant smile, "Leng Ran, anyone might have the right to criticize me, but you certainly do not."

"I couldn’t care less to criticize you. I’m just reminding Nan Fei, as an old classmate, to be mindful of the people around her. Don’t end up being harmed without even realizing it," Leng Ran retorted, her presence no less imposing. After speaking her mind, she stood up from the sofa, ice-cold, "Nan Fei, I’ve said my piece. I won’t say anymore, lest you think I’m sowing discord."

"Thanks for the warning," Nan Fei replied, unmoving on the sofa, making it clear she hadn’t taken Leng Ran’s words to heart—after all, she would judge for herself what the truth actually was.
