Chapter 1239: Chapter 1258: Uninvited Guest
Receiving an affirmative answer, Nan Fei felt as though someone had grabbed her heart tightly, leaving her a bit breathless. She had secretly hoped, perhaps Zhuanzhuan wasn’t her biological sister! Maybe they didn’t share any blood relation at all!
If that were the case, her heart would feel slightly better.
Yet, fate had its ironies; the one who wasn’t blood-related turned out to be Jiang Yang.
"It was Huo Beijiang who told you about Jiang Yang, right? I guessed as much after hearing Wei Qin say that he and Huo Beijiang were brothers. Since you are all in Imperial City, he would undoubtedly have told you," Zhang Fengmei chattered on the phone, spilling the beans about everything that happened over a decade ago.
And then she asked anxiously, "Nan Fei, do you blame Mom? We had no choice back then. Without a son, your great aunt would have trampled our whole family, not to mention the constant backstabbing everywhere we went."
This kind of traditional mindset in the countryside was detestable yet impossible to oppose. And it wasn’t just in the countryside; cities were the same, especially among the older generation.
Fortunately, decades later, the national conditions had changed, and the younger generation’s way of thinking had become more open.
Tears welled up in Nan Fei’s eyes as she listened. Having grown up in the countryside herself, how could she not understand? Besides, her parents had saved Jiang Yang, and she felt happy about it.
"I don’t blame you. What you did was right."
"We’re now worried about how to tell Jiang Yang. He’s still young, and we don’t know if it would hurt him." Zhang Fengmei said, then suddenly brightened up at a thought, "I think Wei Qin is a good person, and since he has gone to great lengths to find his brother, I’m sure he will be good to Jiang Yang. I’ve heard the Wei Family has quite the background, so I’ll be at ease if Jiang Yang is acknowledged and goes back to them. Ah! Jiang Yang has really had a hard time with us. It’s all because I’m a useless mother."
"Mom, don’t talk like that. I believe he’s happy with our family." The Jiang Family indeed lived under modest conditions, but she could say with a clear conscience that her parents truly treated Jiang Yang as their own son.
"That’s good, that’s good."
"Alright, don’t worry anymore. There’s only a month left until the winter break. Once it starts, we’ll come back to see you. Jiang Yang will come too, and as for whether he wants to return to the Wei Family, we’ll let him make that decision. If Jiang Yang chooses to go back to the Wei Family, then you and Dad must come, you’ll definitely want to see it for yourselves."
Nan Fei had already made up her mind, Jiang Yang couldn’t go back to the Wei Family for now. Firstly, her family wasn’t poor anymore and could provide Jiang Yang with the best education. Secondly, the Wei Family’s convoluted issues made her uneasy about letting Jiang Yang return there.
She needed to see with her own eyes the outcome for Lu Dongxin and Wei An before she could confidently hand over Jiang Yang.
"You actually came back?" Jiang Yang suddenly shouted with a wariness he had never shown before.
Nan Fei’s hand trembled as she held the phone, hastily saying, "Mom, I won’t talk anymore, I’m hanging up. Take good care of yourself and Dad." She immediately hung up and turned her back, facing the doorway.
Zhuanzhuan and Leng Ran were coming in side by side from the outside.
Both seemed close, yet they were continuously competing with each other. Nan Fei had seen too much of the feigned harmony masking underlying discord, and she sensed the odd atmosphere between them as soon as they entered, which relaxed her tightly strung nerves a little.
Zhuanzhuan was hostile toward her, and Leng Ran had ulterior motives. If these two got together, it would spell big trouble.
"Sister Nan Fei." Jiang Yang ran to Nan Fei’s side in a panic and hid behind her.
Seeing him act like this, the corner of Zhuanzhuan’s mouth twitched subtly. He really knew how to act; she had misjudged Jiang Yang before.
