Chapter 942: Chapter 0942: Half a Grain Ticket 4
Working with a cigarette wedged between his fingers, the staff member glanced at the near-empty pack in Lu Jiang’s hand.
Seeing the cue, Lu Jiang immediately stuffed the cigarette into his pocket, whispering, "I don’t smoke; it’s for the comrade."
The staff member immediately smiled, spitting out the butt of the cigarette he had been smoking, "Fine, but you’ll need to take apart the old furniture to take it with you. Weigh it down to the last gram, I can’t be short or I’ll have trouble explaining things."
"Thank you, comrade, thank you. Could you lend me a few tools? I’ll take the furniture apart," Lu Jiang replied.
With cigarettes involved, everything was easier to negotiate.
The staff member knew all too well that, firstly, Lu Jiang was dressed like a cadre, and secondly, the Zhonghua cigarettes were cadre smokes, not available without a special ration coupon. Common folks, even with money, couldn’t buy them, and the same went for Moutai liquor.
"Being in the army is great; being an official is even better—you get ration coupons for cigarettes and alcohol."
Hearing his wistful remark, Lu Jiang immediately responded, "We’ve come to Shanghai on business with not much to bring; however, we do have a bottle of Moutai and a bottle of Fen liquor. I’ll bring them over tomorrow; we can have a taste."
Though he said this casually, the staff member very well understood that the offer was meant for him, "It’s too kind of you, too kind."
By dusk, Lu Jiang, along with Feng Qingxue, easily carried out two large bundles of dismantled old furniture parts.
In Feng Qingxue’s hands were paper and pen, purchased openly and aboveboard, her spirits soaring. That afternoon, she had likely stolen over thirty paintings and calligraphy pieces, each a priceless treasure, over forty ancient books, a dozen or so bronze and iron artifacts, over twenty pieces of porcelain, a dozen small wooden carvings, and some precious items from the secret compartments of old furniture.
After explaining themselves to the hotel service staff, they smoothly brought the dismantled furniture parts and paper and pen into their room.
After a quick shower, the couple retired to separate rooms.
While Feng Qingxue was drying her hair, she took the opportunity to organize the cultural relics and antiques that she had collected in her space. In the space, objects could be arranged according to her will; clothes, food, and the like were all categorized neatly, including the recently added cultural relics and antiques. This didn’t take any of her time at all. She was just recording today’s findings so that she wouldn’t be all over the place when it came time to donate them.
This was her first outing, and it had gone smoothly; Feng Qingxue had a good night’s sleep because of it.
The next morning, she and Lu Jiang went out to have breakfast outside. If they kept eating inside, it would definitely raise suspicions—who could live without eating or drinking?
Therefore, it was essential to dine out for three meals a day, even if eating less at each.
There was a breakfast place nearby, and upon entering, the couple were warmly welcomed. Lu Jiang asked for pan-fried buns, ordering two servings that, in addition to the Grain Ticket, came to a total of four mao. He also ordered a bowl of salty soy milk, while Feng Qingxue wanted wontons and ordered a bowl for herself.
The server said, "Serving the people. Half a Grain Ticket for the wontons."
"Half a Grain Ticket?" Lu Jiang’s eyes widened in disbelief. "How do you pay with half a Grain Ticket? Tear one ticket into two pieces?"
Before Feng Qingxue could reply, the young female server rolled her eyes at him, "Just by hearing you talk, I can tell you’re from out of town, don’t you know that here in Shanghai we issue half Grain Tickets? One bowl of wontons is half a Grain Ticket; one fried dough stick is half a Grain Ticket; one bowl of soy milk is half a Grain Ticket; one bowl of chicken congee is half a Grain Ticket..."
Lu Jiang quickly interjected, "Stop, stop, stop. So, you get all this for half a Grain Ticket? Here, take the money and the ticket. Could you serve up some good pan-fried buns, bowl of salty soy milk, and a bowl of wontons for us? Qingxue, you want anything else?"
Feng Qingxue smiled and shook her head; a bowl of wontons was enough for her.
