Chapter 941: Chapter 0941: Half a Grain Ticket 3
There were tram rails on the road, with trams coming and going, and through the windows you could see they were packed with people.
Feng Qingxue purposefully looked up and stared until her eyes swirled.
Unknowingly, the two of them had made their way to a nearby scrap station.
In a city as large as Shanghai, there were of course more than just three or five scrap stations, especially during such calamitous times. The scrap stations played a significant role, with countless items from ransacked homes sorted here before being sent to factories.
"Serve the people. What brings you comrades here?" the scrap station’s staff asked meticulously.
Having had prior experience, Lu Jiang replied offhand, "Corruption and waste are the gravest crimes. We come from humble beginnings; our homes are in remote areas, lacking paper and pens. We’d like to see if there’s any reusable paper and pens at the scrap station for copying down the great leader’s quotes to promote the importance of the quotes to our folks back home."
The staff member, upon hearing this, smiled broadly and stepped aside, "Study hard and make progress every day. Propaganda is very important, you can look for usable paper and pens in the warehouse, but you must not carry away anything that sabotages the revolution!"
"We have but a short time to make our mark, and must strive earnestly. Rest assured, we are wholeheartedly devoted to the Red Sun, without a single thought of undermining the revolution."
With a smile, Feng Qingxue finished speaking and, led by the staff member, entered the warehouse brimming with waste paper.
Unlike their makeshift city shelters, this was a warehouse, vast and expansive, with scrap materials meticulously sorted into categories, larger in quantity, presenting a grand sight.
After discussing, Feng Qingxue and Lu Jiang, being outsiders, figured it would be difficult to take out large pieces of furniture, and instead focused on books, calligraphy and such that were easier to pilfer without getting caught, as well as any antiques like scrap metal when no one was looking, for each artifact was imbued with the wisdom of the ancients.
Of the plethora of books and calligraphy, ones of value were hard to spot amidst such volume.
The comparison was exhausting; finding a few saplings in a small mound is easy, but locating a few among the vastness of endless mountains is a draining task.
After half an hour of being covered in dirt, they found plenty of blank paper and writing brushes, but only a few valuable calligraphies.
Having one was better than none.
With this belief in mind, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue persisted, until Feng Qingxue nudged Lu Jiang’s arm, "I just took a look, and there are several particularly precious Ming and Qing dynasties huali, jinsi nan, and zitan pieces among the old furniture over there. Go ask the staff if they can buy some old furniture to take home and refurbish."
This was the best excuse, the most universal excuse.
Lu Jiang thought for a moment, "Okay, I’ll give it a try."
He noticed that the warehouse guard was smoking a cigarette butt carelessly in a place like the scrap station where smoking was quite dangerous, and asked Feng Qingxue for a pack of cigarettes, knowing she often kept some cigarettes and alcohol stashed away.
Feng Qingxue handed him a box of Zhonghua cigarettes priced at sixty-five cents, "Don’t cause a dispute; if you can buy it, buy it, if not, let it go."
The precious wood of the Ming and Qing dynasty furniture was valuable, but not as important as the safety of him and his spouse.
Lu Jiang approached the staff member and offered a cigarette, "A single spark can start a prairie fire. Comrade, may I purchase a few pieces of old furniture to refurbish? We have many children at home, several of which are of marrying age. But we can’t get Furniture Tickets and have no way of buying furniture, so we thought of refurbishing old furniture, much like transforming old thoughts."
