Chapter 666: Chapter 0666 A Letter 1_1
As they stepped outside, in the corner of the yard, they saw a lush cluster of roses. Xibao clamored for flowers, but even when Feng Qingxue covertly swatted his bottom twice, it did nothing to calm him down. The little guy glared at her and seemed prepared to go complain to the elderly leader himself.
The old leader, hearing the commotion from inside, ordered Lan Tianming to pick a few more roses for Xibao.
Lan Tianming did as he was told, snipping off over a dozen roses and carefully removing their tiny thorns.
With that, Xibao joyously left the old leader’s residence with an armload of roses. The flowers blocked his view, causing him to move slowly and clumsily, nearly making him trip and almost causing Feng Qingxue to give up leading him. But she reluctantly persisted. After they had walked a little distance, they encountered a well-known elderly leader’s wife out for a stroll.
Feng Qingxue graciously came to a stop and respectfully greeted her.
"No need to be so formal." The old woman chuckled and spoke to Feng Qingxue before leaning in to ask Xibao, "Oh, is this the sweet child that my old husband encountered this morning? He just took one look at him and started calling him his grandson. He’s so adorable, what’s his name?"
"Baobao!" Xibao tried to point at his nose but failed due to his hands being full of flowers.
He thought for a moment, then selected a rose from the bunch and offered it to the old woman. "Grandma, flower! Pretty!"
The old woman was taken aback. "Is this for me?"
"Yes!" Xibao nodded enthusiastically, looking as if he were pecking rice like a chicken.
"What a good boy!" The old woman’s face immediately broke into a delighted smile. She pinned the rose to her jacket, where it looked dazzlingly beautiful against the green leaves. The elderly woman seemed rejuvenated.
By the time they reached the gate, Xibao was left with only one rose. All the rest had been given away along the path.
Without exception, all recipients were women.
Their ages varied greatly, but all were overjoyed to receive a flower.
The last rose was given to Du Xiaotao when they returned to the dormitory, delighting him to no end. "Xibao, I knew you loved me! You even thought of me when giving out flowers. Where did you get them? Not many people grow flowers these days."
Flowers were viewed as a symbol of hedonism and many were plucked clean from gardens.
Planting trees was encouraged, but not flowering plants.
"They’re from the old leader’s house. I think Xibao saved one especially for you. He was so shameless, insisting on flowers. Almost died of embarrassment." Feng Qingxue rubbed her neck as she sat on the bed to rest, finally able to relax after a tense day.
To her, the day’s experiences were beyond unbelievable.
On hearing the flowers were from the old leader’s residence, Du Xiaotao cradled it like a treasure. "I’ll cherish it."
The place where the old leaders lived and worked was renowned for its beautiful gardens and was well known to most of the Capital’s residents.
While Du Xiaotao treasured the flower, Feng Qingxue held great value to the two gifts from the old leader.
On the title page of the poetry collection given to Xibao by the old leader was the inscription: "Xibao, study hard and make progress every day", along with the old leader’s signature and date. The ink from his calligraphy brush was still fresh.
Feng Qingxue’s present was a pen, a brand-new Hero pen.
Once Du Xiaotao and Xibao had fallen asleep, Feng Qingxue carefully stored the poetry collection and pen away as permanent keepsakes.
Public opinion generally held that any conversations with leaders contained confidential information. Therefore, even though the medical soldiers were extremely curious about Feng Qingxue’s meeting with the old leader, no one dared to ask her about it. However, their attitude towards Feng Qingxue had improved significantly. Everyone got along cheerfully, the atmosphere was highly conducive to mutual learning, and no one caused any trouble.
