Chapter 521: Chapter 520: Who Said You Can Only Survive On Human Blood
"I was bitten by a vampire," Shi Ye said as he sat up in bed, got out of it, and walked over to Mianmian.
Mianmian could see in the dark.
She clearly saw that Shi Ye’s body had become dried up and shriveled, with teeth protruding from his mouth. He looked completely different from before, like a dried-up corpse.
In fact, vampires and zombies are quite similar; both have a thirst for human blood and initial fear of sunlight. However, zombies evolve and become able to withstand sunlight, while vampires always fear it.
Shi Ye must have faced the vampire in that battle and failed to defeat it, resulting in the vampire draining his blood.
"I was supposed to die," Shi Ye uttered, "In my confusion, I was thrown into the sea. I should have died, but before dying, blood somehow entered my mouth."
His voice filled with resentment: "I would have been better off dead then! Better than becoming this abomination, neither alive nor dead!!"
His overwhelming distress and anger made his voice so loud that the people outside could hear him.
Su Chenjin, with dark eyes, asked Chu Qi, "Can you trust your subordinate?"
Chu Qi replied, "Of course, I can trust him."
Su Chenjin said no more, and the two men silently guarded the door.
After Shi Ye had yelled, he belatedly realized that his voice could also be heard by the boss outside. He was conscious of the fact that Chu Qi had been asking him questions earlier, which he had been enduring without speaking.
Actually, he was a member of the Dragon Group.
The Dragon Group of Dragon Country is known for taking on severe assignments that even special forces can’t handle. Sometimes, when important figures are in dangerous areas for diplomacy, it’s these people who protect them in secret.
Before the Supernatural Management Bureau had been established, they also dealt with troublesome supernatural occurrences. In times of turmoil, the Dragon Group would split up, leading relevant teams to fight for the country.
Shi Ye had wanted to join the Dragon Group after hearing stories about it during his military service. He was drawn to the idea of working in the shadows to serve the light. But as a member of the Dragon Group, how could he become a vampire?
Vampires are monsters that live on human blood, and they foreign to our country.
Even becoming a zombie would be better...
He had even searched on his mobile phone; if he developed sharp fangs and could move freely, he was definitely not a zombie, but a vampire!! That meant he could only venture out at night and survive on human blood.
How would he carry out his missions in the future? Suck the blood of the very people he’s supposed to protect while on assignment?
Thinking about this made Shi Ye utterly despondent.
"I, I tried so hard." His voice choked up, "I exceeded the mission requirements, I consistently ranked at the top, and that’s how I was exceptionally recruited to work directly under the boss. Now, now it’s all been ruined..."
Initially, he had planned to disembark to help the guests evacuate, but he was discovered by an enemy vampire. During their struggle, neither his dagger nor his silencer proved effective.
"How could we encounter such an extraordinary and terrifying enemy?" Shi Ye clutched at his hair, breaking down and saying, "It’s all because you showed up that they appeared..."
Upon hearing this, Mianmian felt really angry.
"Their appearance has nothing to do with Mianmian. Even if Mianmian hadn’t come along, they would still exist in Western countries. How can you blame her for bringing them out?"
Shi Ye’s eyes were red with anger, glaring at Mianmian: "That man named Charlie came to the show because of you. Those monsters came to Dragon Country because of Charlie. How is it not because of you?"
"You, you..." Mianmian was even more infuriated, "You’re being unreasonable..."
Little Bun said in a hoarse voice, tears streaming down.
Actually, what Shi Ye was saying made sense.
Indeed, it was because she came to the Variety Show that Charlie wanted to come, and then Shi Ye encountered the vampire...
After thinking this, Mianmian suddenly remembered her mom saying that in times of crisis, one shouldn’t let others put all the blame on them and wallow in self-pity. Wallowing in self-pity prevents progress and keeps one trapped in the disasters of the past.
So she clenched her little fists and said very earnestly, "You’re right; it happened the way you said it did. But even if Charlie hadn’t come to our country because of Mianmian, does that really mean we would never have encountered them?"
Her words left Shi Ye stunned.
If it weren’t for Mianmian, would the people of Dragon Country really never encounter those monsters from the Western countries?
The answer is impossible.
Since the monsters exist, it is inevitable that one day they will be encountered.
And so, one day, as a member of the Dragon Group, he would still be drained of blood and discarded somewhere else.
Shi Ye’s expression became one of defeat.
Actually, using Mianmian as an excuse was just his way of not wanting to admit his own incompetence. After years of training and over five years on the job, he’d barely lasted five moves against an abnormal opponent before getting his throat bitten.
"It’s really my own fault," Shi Ye said with a bitter smile, his sharp teeth becoming more pronounced with his grin, "I’m too weak, which is why I was drained of blood. If it were the boss, it wouldn’t have happened."
"I just, just can’t accept that I now have to live on human blood. How can I, being like this, calmly stay in the Dragon Group?"
Upon hearing Shi Ye’s confession, Mianmian said in surprise, "Who said you have to live on human blood?"
Shi Ye: "Isn’t that the case?"
Mianmian shook her head: "Nope, mom said she’s met a vampire who only drank animal blood; it’s just less tasty than human blood, that’s all."
Before the turmoil in Dragon Country, her mother, Jiang Yao, loved to travel around the world. She had encountered a vampire in a Western country and would tell dad that the vampire, who only drank animal blood, was handsome, elegant, and gentlemanly. He was the family type among vampires and had even helped her teach a lesson to other ill-intentioned vampires!
Curious about the difference between drinking animal and human blood, her mother asked the vampire, who said, "It’s rather like different kinds of wine, they taste different. But the strength you obtain is the same; you don’t need human blood exclusively."
Mianmian relayed what her mother said and the story about the vampire encounter to Shi Ye.
Finally, there was light in Shi Ye’s eyes again! If he could survive without harming his own kind, he could definitely still work for the Dragon Group, right? He would only have to drink the blood of domesticated meat animals like pigs!
"I, I... then I..." Shi Ye stuttered, his words trailing off before he could finish, and he collapsed to the floor.
Mianmian blinked, hopped down from the chair, and opened the door.
Chu Qi said quietly to Mianmian from outside the door, "Thank you."
Mianmian: "You don’t have anything to thank me for."
Chu Qi said softly, "When people face a great blow, they only speak the truth in front of those they are closest to and trust the most. Shi Ye is complaining, but in his heart, he thinks you can solve it for him."
This was the first time Chu Qi had spoken so much.
By then, Su Chenjin had already bent down to pick up his Little Auntie in his arms. After he held her close, he raised an eyebrow and said quietly, "Mr. Chu, your words are a bit of moral coercion. Our Little Auntie’s closest people are us and have nothing to do with that resentful Dragon Group member inside."
After saying this, he turned to carry Mianmian away.
With her chin resting on Su Chenjin’s broad shoulder, Mianmian waved at Chu Qi, her little face wearing a sweet smile as if she hadn’t taken Su Chenjin’s words to heart.
