Chapter 104 - do it spectacularly
No camera, no champagne, no classy music playing, no soft laughter, no fine dishes, no elegant clothes, and no snap of flashlights... everything was silent, yet her ears rang from the eerie silence.
Why was she still living? What was she still living for? After everything—she was thrown away, discarded, and forgotten.
Was that how people forget someone?
Amanda clutched the piece of paper in her hand and gritted her teeth in anger. Since everything had been exposed, Mason was nowhere to be found. She went to the apartment they always met at, but it had been deserted. She asked around the neighborhood before someone gave her the new address.
Amanda looked at the address again and a shaky laugh burst out of her lips. Mason was living well in a good neighborhood now, when he was part of the reason she ended up like this.
She took a cab to the neighborhood, to the address, and stared down at the story building with a sigh. After all the money he collected from her, he was able to rent this place.
She walked in and met the security guard, pretending to have a special package. She took the elevator, covering her head with a black scarf which hid the side of her face.
As she got to the apartment, she rang the bell and waited. She really hoped he was there, and to her shock, a woman opened the door—a woman in a see-through crimson robe, her face flushed, panting heavily. Amanda stared down to see white liquid trickling down the woman’s thigh, and a wave of tears washed over her.
"Who’s there, Sandy?" the familiar voice of the man of her nightmares came in, and Amanda’s body instinctively tensed up from fear—yet the anger she felt overcame it.
She was here breaking down, broke and lost, yet Mason was enjoying his time with another woman.
"I don’t know. It seems like a beggar," the woman responded, looking at Amanda’s shattered clothes.
Amanda’s body shook with anger, clutching the bag at her side tightly. Then Mason showed himself—sweat trickling down his bare chest, his hair messy.
Noticing her, he had a mocking smirk. "Oh, look who graced me with her presence," he mocked, revealing himself more.
"Who’s she?" the woman asked, looking from Mason to Amanda.
"No one important," Mason responded, pulling the woman into a kiss as he flashed Amanda an evil grin.
"Okay, hon." The woman pecked Mason’s lips and turned inside.
Amanda clenched her teeth at the blatant belittling. "Mason..." she gritted out.
"What do you want? You’re not usable to me anymore. You don’t have value," he taunted, walking closer to her and pulling the scarf from her face.
"Y-you..." Amanda was short of words as emotions clogged her throat. She still had a tiny hope that if the world turned its back on her, at least Mason wouldn’t. But what did she expect from her blackmailer?
"Go away, Amanda. You’re not welcome here. You were good when you were high," he muttered with disdain and turned to jam the door in her face.
But Amanda had had enough—enough of people walking over her, especially not Mason. She was the one behind Mason’s money, she paid him everything, gave him everything he asked for. And without thinking, she brought out the gun she had been carrying around since she lost her little monster.
Whenever she wanted to pull the trigger to end her pathetic life, there was always something holding her back. Maybe it was this. Without thinking further, she shot Mason.
Mason turned back, his eyes widened in shock as he coughed out blood. Blood gurgled down his throat and Amanda smiled—a wide smile graced her lips as her eyes glinted manically.
Was it this easy to end someone’s life?
Hearing the gunshot, the woman came out to check what was happening and opened her mouth to scream, but Amanda beat her to it and shot the woman too.
Amanda laughed out—her laugh turning to tears as tears streamed down her eyes, staring at the bodies on the ground while jostling the gun in her hand.
Amanda checked the hallway—it was empty and still empty—before walking inside the apartment. She went straight to the bedroom, opened the drawer, and took every stash of bills there, and phones. Then she went to the kitchen, saw an unbitten sandwich there. Without hesitation, she chomped on it hungrily. It had been long since she had a full meal, then she drowned wine.
After she was done, she walked out of the building nonchalantly, feeling nothing remorseful. If she wanted to go down this way, then she should do it spectacularly.
From the money she stole—no, that was her money, though it didn’t even reach the amount she had spent or rather given him—she went to a cheap motel and lodged in. She couldn’t go back to her previous tiny apartment.
The people might have noticed what happened to Mason by now and called the police, but she didn’t care. She wasn’t dying when she still had someone else to remove.
She stripped down, took a long shower to get some of the hidden blood splatter from her body as she waited for the guilt to eat her up—but nothing. No trembling of hands, no shaky breathing, no hyperventilating, no tears. Just nothing. Her eyes were empty and cold. So hollow, and she couldn’t feel anything right now.
After the shower, Amanda stepped out and changed her outfit, then wolfed down another bit of sandwich she took out. Even though she had her fill earlier, she still wanted to eat more because she didn’t want to feel that hunger again in her life. She plopped on the bed after a long day; she needed rest before she played her next victim.
Amanda woke up with a groan, swallowing as she took in the room she was in and laughed again, remembering the cold, lifeless body of Mason. Then without wasting time, she arranged her documents and quickly checked her phone to see if the police had caught on—but when there was nothing, she left.
Then without any hesitation, she boarded the first flight to New City, where the next person was.
Amanda took a cab to the familiar road—Katherine’s apartment. There was no way she would leave that bitch alone. She would kill her, then herself, to end this insanity. None of them deserved to live. If she didn’t, then that bitch didn’t either.
Amanda watched from far away and saw Katherine having that wide, problem-free smile as she ushered the kids out of the apartment building.
Amanda scoffed, throwing groundnuts in her mouth as she crunched angrily. The bitch was smiling, happy, while she was hiding like a goddamn criminal. Well, she was now a criminal. Just a few hours before the police came for her, but before that, she needed to make her crime big enough for the arrest.
She watched the female twin tug Katherine’s sleeve and Katherine bent to listen before both burst out laughing, as Amanda felt her uncontrollable anger fuel up. She just wanted to go there and end it all, but she needed to calm down.
She couldn’t just shoot someone outside like this; she wouldn’t be able to escape.
"That’s okay!" Katherine said in a stern tone, still with a smile twinkling in her eyes.
"Aye, Captain!" the child saluted.
"Let’s meet your daddy, he’s waiting for us." Katherine ruffled her children’s hair before ushering them.
For the first time in twenty-four hours, her heart... her thumb numbed at the mention of ’daddy’ because Amanda knew who the ’daddy’ was, and that was Aaron.
Just the mere thought of him made her chest ache, and she shook her head and shoved the thought down her throat with difficulty.
Then she started trailing after the cab Katherine and her spawns took. Amanda made the driver follow the cab until they stopped at the front of a restaurant.
A restaurant she, Amanda, would have walked into, having a detested, disappointed look where the staff fretted over her to give her premium hospitality. But now, she couldn’t even go near.
Hahaha, the irony of life.
And then Amanda saw him—Aaron—and her heart started thumping, her hands trembling. She really thought about destroying him, but seeing him standing outside the restaurant, holding a bouquet of flowers, gaze softened—something quite different from the blank or condescending look he always gave her—and she swallowed hard.
He was still so breathtaking. Amanda clutched the strap of her bag as she saw Aaron take languid steps to Katherine, kissed her, then dropped to his knees and pecked the children.
He kissed Katherine! He kissed her.
Amanda’s eyes zeroed in on the hands wrapped around Katherine, holding her affectionately—he had never held her like that, looked at her like that, never kissed her, never bought her flowers, never!
Without caring about stalking Katherine before she did what she intended, she strode out of her hiding. She couldn’t contain the anger anymore. Katherine should get the hell away from Aaron.
Amanda marched out. "Stop," she said, making them turn back to her.
Amanda smiled a little, seeing the slight widening in Katherine’s eyes and Aaron’s beautiful face morph into a scowl.
Katherine then smiled tightly, urging the kids inside the restaurant.
"What are you doing here?" Aaron asked, shielding Katherine from the deranged lady.
"I’m not here for you, darling husband," she grinned manically. "I’m here for her." She pointed at Katherine.
Katherine slightly nudged Aaron away as she made herself reveal.
"What do you want from me, Amanda?" Katherine asked.
"What do I want from you?" Amanda laughed humorlessly. "I want everything from you, like how you took everything from me!" Amanda yelled.
Katherine pinched the bridge of her nose. "I don’t know what you mean, but I and my man—" Amanda flinched from how Katherine wrapped her arms around Aaron and Aaron had a smile on his lips, looking at the contact. Amanda couldn’t miss the mocking and possessive tone from Katherine’s voice when she said ’my man’... "get a date." Katherine said, waving her hands dismissively.
And as Katherine turned while holding Aaron’s arm, Amanda had enough and rummaged through her bag and brought out the gun. "Then go get the date in hell, bitch!" Amanda yelled and pulled the trigger.
In an instant, Aaron slid himself in front of Katherine and grunted out in pain before slumping down, clutching his chest as blood seeped through his shirt.
"Aaron!" Katherine shouted, shaking Aaron’s body a little while putting pressure on the hole in his chest.
No, not him! Not him! The gun fell from Amanda’s hand as she shook her head. She meant to shoot Katherine, not Aaron. Not him! Amanda wanted to take a step to check on him but stopped when she saw people already murmuring, a crowd forming, and some had their phones on their ears. Her chest picked in fear, trepidation as she ran hot on her heels.
But when did everything start to go downhill? Was it when she poured wine on Katherine? Was it when she tried to threaten Katherine? Was it from the beginning when they arrived at the hotel? Was it when she went to the bar and had an illicit affair with Mason? Or was it when she offered Aaron the contract marriage years ago? Or was it when she first saw Aaron and felt her heart skip?
Amanda didn’t even know anymore, but she wasn’t escaping this.
