Chapter 34: The Invasion Begins... The Dragons Arrives!

Time passed, and soon more than two weeks had slipped by.

During this period, Matthew continued attending his lessons. On the surface, everything appeared peaceful, but deep within, he knew that calm was merely a deceptive illusion.

Both Leo and Sylvia had their abilities unsealed by their respective systems. Leo remained furious at the system’s earlier stunt, still muttering curses under his breath, but Sylvia, on the other hand, took it all in stride. She treated the experience as part of her growth, a harsh training arc she had to pass through.

Aside from the routine of classes and training sessions, nothing at the academy seemed out of place.

Yet, during this time, Matthew had deliberately refrained from copying anyone else’s origin path. He was constantly analyzing, scrutinizing each possibility with deep concentration. With four abilities still left to awaken, he could not afford a single misstep. Every choice had to align perfectly with the others, forming a cohesive and dominant synergy.

He had narrowed it down to two potential abilities, yet uncertainty lingered. He was still weighing the consequences, turning the possibilities over in his mind.

At present, he sat beside Axel in the infirmary.

Axel had completely recovered and was moments away from using the upgrade crystal.

His eyes sparkled with anticipation as he stared at the radiant treasure resting in his hand.

Matthew watched him intently, his own eyes filled with curiosity.

Though he had written extensively about the upgrade crystal, he had never experienced it personally. This would be his first time witnessing its activation. While he was not the one using it, he hoped to understand its mechanics by observing Axel closely. That knowledge would guide him the next time he acquired one.

Axel reached toward the crystal, fingers trembling slightly. The upgrade crystal exuded a strange glow, as though a mystic fire burned within its core.

The moment Axel placed his hand upon it and began channeling energy from his origin crystal, something changed.

He felt a connection form, a strange bond between the two crystals. A mysterious current surged outward from the upgrade crystal and flowed directly into his origin crystal, like a stream of molten light.

Matthew narrowed his eyes, observing the reaction. He could sense the shift.

’So it works for him? Then the issue must lie within my origin ability,’ he thought, a flicker of surprise flashing across his features. ’But how do I fix it?’

At the same time, another part of him was wondering just how much the SS-grade Copy Cat ability would improve.

In his original story, the Copy Cat ability was strong but heavily underestimated due to its instability. But with an upgrade, would its flaws be erased?

The upgrade process continued for several minutes. A strange pressure filled the room as faint currents of light swirled in the air. Eventually, the glowing aura surrounding the crystal began to fade, and the upgrade crystal crumbled into fine dust that drifted down like glittering ash.

But the transformation had already taken place.

Axel closed his eyes and allowed the surge of power to course through him. He could feel the difference immediately. The energy within him now flowed more smoothly, more confidently, like a river that had just broken free of a dam.

’So this is what separates an S-grade ability from an SS-grade one?’ he thought, a shiver running down his spine.

A torrent of information entered his mind, and with it came understanding. His ability had evolved.

"This... this is absolutely insane!" he exclaimed, his voice echoing through the infirmary walls.

Matthew sat up straighter, his interest fully piqued.

He leaned forward. "What changed? What new features did your Copy Cat ability gain?"

Axel took a shaky breath, emotion welling in his chest. He wanted to thank Matthew a thousand times, but no words could properly convey his gratitude.

Opening his mouth slowly, he spoke.

"The previous drawbacks—those negative effects related to time interference—are gone. Completely gone. Also, I can now store the last three abilities I copied and use them later."

Matthew’s eyes widened.

That was absurdly powerful.

He could not hide his astonishment. "That’s incredible. It’s like having three extra abilities on standby at all times."

Axel nodded, smiling with satisfaction.

Just as the excitement began to build, the lights overhead flickered violently. The room darkened in an instant.

Then—Bang!

A deafening blast tore through the academy. Shouts of fear erupted, screams filled the air, and the scent of smoke and burnt flesh permeated everything. Chaos had arrived.

The walls trembled. Outside the window, red flashes lit the skies, and the sound of battle echoed faintly.

Cries of pain and confusion rose, mingling with the crackling of distant flames.

Axel and Matthew froze.

Though they did not yet understand the full situation, Matthew’s expression hardened.

He knew. Enough time had passed.

The invasion had begun.

The dragon invasion.

"Surviving will be difficult," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the distant chaos. He turned to Axel with a grim expression.

"It has begun."

...

Elsewhere, atop a towering building, a menacing figure surveyed the dozens of soldiers assembled before him.

Half-dragons.

All of them stood still, awaiting his command.

"After all the delays, we have finally received the green light from the higher authorities," the man said coldly. "Kill all the first-year students. Leave none alive."

He clenched his fists, a dark smile creeping across his face.

His revenge had only just begun.

Step by step, he would crush the Origin Academy into nothingness.

"You need not worry about any instructors or elders coming to the rescue. All those ranked seven and above have been sealed out. The academy is locked down. No one can teleport in or out. This barrier will only hold for eight hours."

"Use that time. Go wild. Slaughter everyone you see."

Silas’s voice echoed through the wind.

The treasure they had used was a powerful seal. It completely blocked entry to those above Rank Eight of the Esper Realm.

With it in place, Silas could unleash hell without fear of consequence.

The students were weak. Most were only at Rank Nine, and many hadn’t even awakened their esper abilities yet.

...

In a different section of the academy, far from the chaos, a young man lay asleep.

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed in his ears.

[New Mission!]

[A-grade Mission: Survive the Crisis!]

Leo groaned, already annoyed, and was about to curse the system again when he read the words more clearly.

Crisis?

What crisis?

He glanced around but found nothing unusual.

’System, are you trying to prank me again?’ he growled internally. He still hadn’t forgiven it for the last absurd mission.

But then the system’s voice rang out once more.

This time, Leo noticed a strange, solemn undertone.

[Dragons.]

[Lots of dragons.]

[Host, please... survive.]

Boom!

The ground trembled violently as a second explosion erupted outside.

Leo’s eyes widened in horror.

It wasn’t a prank this time.

It was war.
