Chapter 259: The Eerie Enclosed Mountain and the Swampy Smoky Forest!

First, there was the miasma in Enclosed Mountain and the swamps in the Smoky Forest.

Enclosed Mountain got its name because it was a truly eerie mountain. Although it was surrounded by open air, the strangest part was the dense banana trees that grew all around its borders. These trees had large, lush leaves and grew very vigorously.

This excessive growth hindered air circulation around the mountain, causing poor airflow. Moreover, some poisonous green plants were growing around Enclosed Mountain that released a lot of toxic gas every day. With no wind to disperse the gas, the mountain became filled with it over time.

This toxic environment led to two extremes in the local wildlife.

On one hand, there were very nutritious and valuable plants like ganoderma, ginseng, and detoxifying herbs. On the other hand, the mountain was filled with poisonous creatures like scorpions and snakes.

The place was so dangerous that people rarely dared to venture into it. Despite advancements in science and medicine, few were willing to take the risk, especially since the routes were unfamiliar and it was easy to get lost or separated. Plus, various poisonous creatures were lurking around.

“Once, a team of researchers went to Enclosed Mountain hoping to find some valuable stuff. They were well-prepared, but they came out within three days. The miasma inside was so thick they couldn’t even open their eyes or see their hands in front of them. They could easily run into snakes or insects. One of the researchers got bitten by a venomous insect and had to be taken away by an ambulance. His leg was bleeding a lot. It looked like it couldn’t be saved,” the old man’s son recounted vividly.

His gestures and words painted a terrifying picture that made Wang Yun’s scalp tingle as if he were in Enclosed Mountain himself.

“That dangerous? Why hasn’t anyone tried to clear out Enclosed Mountain?”

Wang Yun, fully engrossed in the story, sat cross-legged on the ground and asked with great interest.

The old man’s son gave him a chilling look, lowered his voice, and cautiously glanced around.

“They have tried. But it was useless.”

When he spoke, there was genuine fear in his eyes.

It turned out that the locals had thought about trying to save Enclosed Mountain before. They had planned to cut down all the banana trees around it. A lot of cranes and workers were brought in at that time. But strangely, as soon as they started working, the workers had mysteriously gotten poisoned.

There were countless banana trees, and the workers had to be fully equipped to chop them down. Full gear was expensive, and the local economy wasn’t very developed to begin with. Despite their efforts, after cutting down hundreds of banana trees, they had found that no matter how many they cut, new ones would appear, almost like soldiers protecting Enclosed Mountain.

These trees grew in a complex, intertwined manner, meaning that unless the whole mountain was leveled, it couldn’t be saved. But to level the mountain, all the poisonous creatures would need to be dealt with first. Even professional researchers couldn’t last three days inside, so for the locals, without economic support, it was impossible.

Over time, the mountain was marked off, and everyone was warned not to enter.

“Aren’t you afraid that the poisonous creatures in the mountain might come out?” Wang Yun asked.

He was a bit hesitant.

If things were really as this person said, entering would be a death trap. If they went in, they’d be walking into certain death. The remaining program inspectors could just station a thousand people around the mountain and wait. Eventually, they would get caught.

The old man quickly shook his head. “That’s the blessing of God. These poisonous creatures have been in there for many years and not a single one has ever come out. Otherwise, we wouldn’t dare stay here.”

Hearing this made Wang Yun even more puzzled. It had sounded so strange coming from him. It seemed that while people couldn’t get in, the things inside couldn’t come out either.

“What’s the deal with Smoky Forest? There are swamps?” Wang Yun asked.

The old man’s son nodded, looking a bit more relaxed. “Smoky Forest is a bit better. It just has some swamps and occasionally crocodiles. It isn’t as bizarre as Enclosed Mountain, but it is still very dangerous. Not long ago, a strong man from the neighboring village had gone looking for wild game and gotten stuck in a swamp. They haven’t found him since.”

After saying this, the old man’s son stood up and dusted himself off.

“Since you’re here for tourism, just avoid those two places, and you’ll be fine. Also, carry some realgar powder on you. Snakes and insects won’t come near you if you have it. We have some at home, ten bucks a pack,” the old man’s son said with a smile.

“Sure, I’ll take ten packs,” Wang Yun replied, pulling out the money.

Since he was here, he’d definitely need it. Whether it was expensive or not didn’t matter, the information these two had shared was worth the price.

Wang Yun’s generous purchase made the father and son warm up to him even more. Seeing an opportunity, they invited Wang Yun to their home for a meal at a very reasonable price, saying he could just give whatever he felt like.

Wang Yun thought it over and agreed. Finding a restaurant around here would be tough, so he might as well eat with the locals. Plus, it was a good chance to learn about the local ingredients. He didn’t want to end up picking poisonous mushrooms if they had to forage in the mountains.

Wang Yun waited by the roadside for a while until Brother Hu and the others arrived. They had planned to meet up two hours later, and although they had no phones, their coordination was spot on.

“We’re having dinner at their place? Boss, how did you manage that? It’s only been two hours, and you’ve already built a good rapport,” Brother Hu exclaimed, thrilled at the news of dinner.

Wang Zi and Xiao Gang, who were on a motorcycle behind them, also looked pleased.

“Not bad, huh? Money helps,” Wang Yun replied. “By the way, did you find a place to stay?”

Brother Hu nodded, holding up two room keys. “Yeah, we found the only decent hotel here. Well, it’s more like a motel. I gave the owner some cash and told him we lost our luggage and needed a place to stay for three days while we waited for a friend. He agreed.”

After saying this, Brother Hu leaned in closer to Wang Yun and whispered, “I also found out that all the security cameras in the motel are broken. They’re just for show.”

Wang Yun chuckled at this.

“Don’t worry so much. Those guys won’t be able to get here in three days.”

“In the afternoon, Brother Hu, you’ll come with me to scout the area. Wang Zi, you and Xiao Gang should wander around and check out all the connecting routes and nearby buildings. Make sure to mark everything.”

The two nodded in agreement.
