Chapter 97: The origin of her name.

At Fortress Four, the bird monster had just flown away, vanishing into the clouds beyond that floodlights on the wall.

The residents of the base finally relaxed. Many exhaled like they had been unable to breathe for so many hours. They put away the guns, knives, spatulas, sticks and stones that they were holding.

"This apocalypse just got weird." Someone said.

"It has always been weird." His neighbor replied.

Nimo leaned back against the wall, legs trembling like twigs beneath her as of the ground itself had been frightened by what dropped by for a visit.

"You alright?" Siegfried asked her.

Nimo sunk to the ground completely and she sat down. "No Siegfried, I am not okay." She replied loudly. "I don’t think that any of us is okay."

"If that is what we are fighting, I am afraid we are going to lose." Private Jenner decided to light a cigarette and sit next to Nimo. "Where did that thing come from?"

Nimo did not know the where and she could not answer. She pulled the cigarette from Jenner’s mouth and took a puff. As she was not a smoker, she choked on smoke and gasped, her lungs unprepared for the unfamiliar sting. Her lashes dampened from involuntary tears. "That is disgusting."

"I did not offer it to you." Jenner reminded her.

He was not the only resident smoking rather than going to bed. Many of them were gathering in groups to discuss this new development.

Hades closed the window meanwhile and returned to the sofa, sitting next to his wife. "It has gone." He shared.

Sunshine looked up from the solar panel she was rewiring. She was on a private mission to build satellite and the panel would be part of it. It would help her know how the rest of the world was fairing. She would also be able to keep an eye on Moon and she what her evil sister was up to.

Hades shifted and covered the space between them. "Shouldn’t we be off to bed now?"

Sunshine turned him down. "I am not sleepy and I need the satellite to start functioning as soon as possible. I need to know what is happening beyond the wall."

Hades was impressed. "Does this mean our cellphones will be able to work again?" He asked.

She looked up and frowned. While the idea of connecting the city or the country to the internet sounded great, it had many disadvantages. For one, what would stop foolish people from livestreaming themselves at the base and drawing the attention of the world?

Wouldn’t that be the same as inviting trouble to themselves? All the marauders would make there way to Westbrook. No doubt Ceasar Rommel would also make his way to them.

"That is not a great idea. I just need to know what is happening outside. As for internet connectivity, it can wait for the fourth or fifth year." She replied.

She went back to work but Hades did not move away. He was not sleepy so he figured he could help by handing her tools and parts like he did sometimes.

"So, why did your parents name you Sunshine?" he asked.

Sunshine had heard that question many times and she had answered it many times. Most times, she just told people that it was because the sun was shining very brightly on the day she was born. With Hades she told the truth.

"My grandmother was named Tempest."

"Well that’s an unusual name." Hades mumbled. "It means storm right?"

"Violent storm." She clarified. Her grandmother’s name was quite heroic. Sunshine could recall all the times her grandfather had said that she should have been named Tempest instead of Sunshine because of her fiery temper. "My grandmother was the one that continued the weather related naming system in the family."

"Mmm, your uncle is Dustin." Hades said in a puzzled voice.

Sunshine put down her tools and turned to him. The distance between them was very small but she did not mind it. "My grandparents had two children, my mom and uncle. My mom was named Dawn and my uncle Dusk. He did not like his name so he changed it as soon as he turned eighteen."

Hades was beginning to see a pattern in the naming. Sunshine and Moon. Dawn and Dusk. He reached for the bottle of wine on the table and poured some in two glasses. He put one in Sunshine’s hand and sipped slowly from the other.

Sunshine also took a small sip of wine and continued, "My grandmother died three days after my parents got married. She never got to witness my birth or Moon’s. We were born just three days apart. My grandfather wanted to carry on the tradition my grandmother started so he named me Sunshine and when Moon was born he gave her the name Moon."

Hades figured that he would finally understand why the names had been chosen. Was it just because they were related to the weather or was there something special.

"I was born on the hottest day of the year. The temperature was 43.2 degrees." She laughed. "My grandfather also claimed that I was born with a sunny smile on my face so he named me Sunshine."

Hades raised one hand in the air like he was celebrating having got his unvoiced suspicion right. Indeed, her name was related to the sun. "And Moon?"

"She was born on a night when the moon happened to be bright. My grandfather claimed that she was born with the beauty of a moon goddess." Sunshine snorted.

Hades chuckled. "And where did your grandfather find a real life moon goddess?"

Sunshine shrugged. "On television in a movie. Maybe in a storybook that he read. He did not lie about Moon’s beauty. My cousin has the heart of a snake and the beauty of a flower."

Hades shuddered. "Thank God the snake stayed away from me."

Sunshine raised her glass. "Here, here."

They clinked their glasses and laughed, drawing even closer to a point where their shoulders were rubbing.

"So hypothetically, if we were to have a child, what would you name them?" he asked her.

Sunshine was not expecting the question. She looked at him and raised her eyebrows. He was smiling and looking at her curiously. He nodded slowly, indicating that he was serious about it.

"Are sure that you want to know?" she asked.

He grimaced and drew back. "Well now I am scared. It’s not Winter, Snow, Autumn...."

"Winter is cute." She jumped in. "So is Snow, Misty, Sol, Thunder...."

"Thunder!!" He exclaimed.

She pointed at the wine bottle and he helped her refill her glass.

As he did that she defended her name choices. "Thunder is a cool name for a boy. Nobody will dare to bully a kid named Thunder because he sounds like he is not afraid to start trouble." She took a sip of wine and lowered the glass just below her bottom lip. "Also he sounds like he likes to fight."

"Or he is part of a biker gang." Hades said.

Sunshine straightened her frame and tapped his shoulder. "Castiel in a leather jacket, jeans, boots and metal hair. Tell me that you don’t think he would be cute!"
