Chapter 93: A forced divorce.
Helena Drew had been in the medic bay for hours, hoping that the doctors could figure out how her voice had been stolen. They had not helped her at all.
Doctor Sing had told her that her throat was inflamed, and they took some blood to run a few tests. Then they kept her in the medic bay with different doctors poking and prodding her.
In the end, none of them helped her and she was sent away.
When she went home to seek her husband, she found two base counselors waiting for her and they escorted her to the information center in the second wall, to the law office where all legal matters on the base were handled.
She was taken into an office and made to sit down. Her husband was in the office too, but they would not allow her sit next to him. He sat in a chair opposite of her, looking at the walls, window and everywhere else but her.
Helena tried to talk to him but without a voice, she could not communicate, So, she knocked on the table and yet he still pretended not to hear her. When she tried to stand up, the camp counselors with their fake smiles forced her to sit down and urged her to calm down.
She had this dreadful feeling that something bad was about to happen and that feeling was verified when Cyrus Shaw entered the office.
His secretary trailed behind with cups of tea that were offered to everyone. Drew sat up and finally faced Helena.
Cyrus Shaw did not waste a single moment. He slid some papers towards Helena. "Miss Helena Montana, I hope that you are having a great day."
Helena slammed her hands on the table and stood up. She made hissing like noises that were faint as she tried to shout at the lawyer. What good day did he think she was having when her voice was gone?
She stared viciously at everyone in the room and jutted her finger at them, accusing them with her eyes. They had sabotaged her, all of them. Someone at this base had harmed her and she would not stop until she found out who it was. The only one she did not suspect was Drew because he did not have the guts.
"Miss Helena, I urge you to calm down. Let’s not make this process any harder than it needs to be. Mr. Drew wants a divorce; the papers are already signed all that is missing is your signature." Cyrus Shaw informed her.
Helena let out silent gasp. She still mouthed out the words and they read them from her lips.
"Yes," Mrs. Shaw confirmed. "Mr. Drew would like a peaceful divorce from you."
Helena picked up the cup of tea, intending to pour it on Cyrus or Drew. One of the base counselors caught her hand in time and the other took the cup forcefully.
Knowing how aggressive his wife was, Isaac Drew stood up and put an even bigger distance between them. "Helena, be sensible about this. What we have cannot be called a marriage anymore. I have tolerated your verbal abuse long enough."
Helena let out a soundless scream, picked up the papers and ripped them. She pointed at Drew and said so many things that nobody heard. But even in silence, her hands spoke volumes, especially the middle finger which she gestured at least ten times.
She made a gesture with everyone guessed was a promise to shred Drew limb from limb.
Cyrus Shaw’s secretary entered the office and brought new papers which Drew signed immediately. Once again, Helena tore them up.
A third copy was brought and this time, Cyrus held it firmly and said, "Miss Helena, tearing up the papers is not going to change things. This divorce is straight forward and not complicated. The two of you don’t have children and as we are now living on the base, there is no property to share. All we need is your signature or a stamp."
Helena gave him a middle finger and crossed her arms across her chest. She would not be signing those papers. Not even if she was held at gun point.
"Okay, we can do this the hard way." Cyrus declared.
Two camp counselor grabbed Helena’s hands, and she was forced stamp the papers with her thumb
"We are done here." Cyrus declared.
The two camp counselors dragged Helena out of the office, silently screaming and kicking.
Corporal Isaac Drew thanked the lawyer and left his office. As soon as he stepped out, he lifted his eyes to the sky and let out a prolonged breath. A heavy burden was suddenly lifted from his shoulders.
He felt like a bird that had been freed from a cage as he walked back to his house which had already been emptied of all Helena’s belongings. She was being moved to the third wall until she could be vacated from the base permanently.
Isaac was very much okay with that.

"The Rainhounds mountain base had not survived the problems that had come with the acid rain. Pastor Salem felt like he was under siege, the acid rain which he once thought was survivable and distant, had found its way into the soil. The acid was not just falling from the sky, but it was boiling from beneath them. Tents once secured into rocky earth began to sag, their supports eaten away from below.
Worse was the fact that he had wanted to display the powers of his superhumans to the believers and sent a water purifier into the rain, things went south when the superhuman died and everyone panicked. Suddenly, the new group of chosen humans that were blessed by God did not seem to be that special.
Pastor Salem was very disturbed about the matter and the report he was getting did not help matters.
"Your influence keeps on reducing by the day while that of Moon grows rapidly because she is out there caring for the people like some kind of merciful, loving angel." Zadok reported.
He did not share everything though because some believers had started to claim that Salem was a mad man and they would rather take their chances out there than with him. The man killed people on a whim.
Moon on the other hand was walking through the people, talking with them, caring for them and kissing babies like she was on a campaign trail. If this was an election, she was winning the polls.
Pastor Salem sniggered. "That witch, I know what she is doing but I will not let her succeed." He twisted his nose, wondering why the mutating mist was not arriving yet. He was ready to grow wings and become an angel like Moon had said he would become. "Why is that damn woman not here just yet!" He hurled the wine glass towards the door spilling its contents, the broken shards landed on Moon’s feet as she entered the room.
She had already arrived but was eavesdropping the ongoing conversation.
"Good you are here." Pastor Salem arranged his white gown in order and sat upright in the chair. "You knew that the acid would move through the soil and yet you told no one. Why did not say a word about this?"
Moon stood straight, face unreadable. "Is that not common sense? normal rain does that too in case you were not aware." She answered brazenly, aware that the believers would die first before allowing him to harm her.
The more beastly he acted, the more her influence grew and she was counting on it to overthrow and end him. He was a foolish man that could not even think of the smallest things.
Why did she have to do all the thinking for him? Why had she been impressed with him in her last life? Salem and Cassius were two peas in a pod. The two men were proving to be unimpressive.
If she found out where Sunshine was, she would throw them both to her.
