Chapter 321: Distribute candy

"Sister, are you okay?" The child noticed Wang Chunfeng’s gaze and immediately threw the stone he was holding.

He was a bit worried about this sister; she was crying so hard.

Just like when mom cried so hard when dad died.

"Sister is fine. Whose child are you?" So innocent and still alive.

"I am Tao Tao’s child, my name is Xu Zhaixiao." Xu Zhaixiao answered honestly.

"Do you want some candy?" Wang Chunfeng didn’t really care whose child he was, and after asking, she grabbed a handful of candies and handed them to him.

"For me, sister?" Xu Zhaixiao could hardly believe it.

So much candy.

"Yes, for you. All of this is for you. Take the candy and do something for sister," Wang Chunfeng said, tugging at the corner of her mouth to force a smile.

But the smile was too ugly, almost frightening, better not to smile at all.

However, Xu Zhaixiao wasn’t a timid child, and he wasn’t scared by Wang Chunfeng.

After cautiously accepting the handful of candy, he carefully asked, "Okay, then... what do you want me to do?" Even as innocent as Xu Zhaixiao was, he knew there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

"Help sister distribute the candies." Xiaxia won’t taste these candies, nor can she taste the sweetness of candy, better to give it all away.

"Okay. I can help." Xu Zhaixiao hadn’t expected it to be so simple.

He was a bit happy, such a simple task in exchange for so much candy; in his excitement, a few candies fell from his hands.

Wang Chunfeng had indeed given him a lot of candy, more than his two hands could hold.

He had barely managed to hold them initially, but now a few had fallen, and it was difficult to hold them all again.

After several attempts to grasp all the candies and failing, Xu Zhaixiao simply lifted his shirt and used it to hold the candies.

"Sister, can I take the candies home first? My house is very close. I will come back right away." Xu Zhaixiao was a little afraid she’d be unhappy, as he hadn’t yet started working and already wanted to take the candies home—which might upset her.

"It’s okay," Wang Chunfeng nodded nonchalantly.

She didn’t really have expectations for Xu Zhaixiao.

Even if Xu Zhaixiao ran away now, she wouldn’t be surprised.

However, Xu Zhaixiao was a child who valued promises; after putting the candies at home, he came back down to help distribute them.

It was very simple.

He just had to stand there, greet people when they came, and give anyone who said "Xu Xiaxia is happy and blissful!" five candies.

It was very simple.

In the apocalypse, the allure of candy was immense.

Everyone was saying they couldn’t buy candies, couldn’t get them.

After all, Galaxy Supermarket had opened right at the base entrance.

The supermarket had a lot of candies.

But no one was willing to spend their hard-earned money on candies.

At such a time, even the most immature child wouldn’t pester to buy candies.

Because buying food was more important than buying candies.

Just say one phrase, and you get five candies— who wouldn’t want that?

Just one phrase.

Moreover, many people, after receiving their candies, queued up again.

Xu Zhaixiao was a bit angry.

How could they do that?

Taking it more than once.

Wang Chunfeng, however, didn’t mind.

She just wanted people to bless Xiaxia; if they took more, they would say more blessings.

Many people were lining up, and every person who got candies blessed Xu Xiaxia.

A bag of candies was quickly distributed.

Not all were given out; there was a little left.

But Wang Chunfeng didn’t continue distributing. She gave the remaining candies to Xu Zhaixiao.

Xu Zhaixiao had been shouting very energetically and loudly.

"Thank you, sister. But sister, I already took some just now," Xu Zhaixiao wanted them yet hesitated.

Candies, of course, he wanted them.

But, he had already taken some.

Taking more would make him just like those people, wouldn’t it?

"I know. Here’s your reward," Wang Chunfeng said, devoid of her usual laughter.

She also realized that her laugh was ugly.

She wouldn’t laugh unless she was with Xiaxia.

Wang Chunfeng had given Xu Zhaixiao the candy before turning away and leaving.

She walked too fast; Xu Zhaixiao wanted to call after her but couldn’t.

Xu Zhaixiao looked down at the bag of remaining candies. There were still many.

Had he really done enough to deserve so much?

Soon, Xu Zhaixiao stopped pondering this question.

People around him had noticed he had a lot of candy and were moving closer.

They probably saw he was just a kid and wanted to rob him.

Xu Zhaixiao was naive, but not stupid.

He immediately ran.

He ran all the way home.

Dashing all the way.

"What’s the matter? Why are you hurrying so? It can’t be that it’s raining stones again outside," Tao Tao saw his frantic running and thought it was another stone rain.

She dashed outside to check; it wasn’t.

Thank goodness.

Tao Tao patted her chest several times.

After calming herself, she noticed what Xu Zhaixiao was holding.

"Where did you get this... candy? Is this candy?"

"Yes, Mom. It’s candy. It’s very sweet. Try it, Mom," Xu Zhaixiao said. Though he hadn’t tried it himself, he knew it was sweet.

While he was helping out, he saw many people immediately eat the candy they received and start crying, saying how sweet it was.

Xu Zhaixiao unwrapped a piece and held it up to Tao Tao’s face.

He expected his mom to eat the candy right away and comment on its sweetness.

But that didn’t happen.

Tao Tao did not eat the candy; she looked at the candy next to her mouth, her face showing discomfort.

"Where did you get this candy? Did you steal it from the supermarket?" Tao Tao had also gone shopping at the supermarket.

Their family still had some Crystal Cores, which she had exchanged for money to buy staple food.

The exchanged money wasn’t much, so besides staples, she dared not buy anything else.

She wouldn’t even buy salt.

Just staples.

Such things were worth it; they satiated hunger.

Tao Tao knew Xu Zhaixiao wasn’t the kind of child to steal because she had raised him.

She knew that to survive the apocalypse, being too naive was a danger; only those who were selfish and ruthless had a better chance of lasting.

It wasn’t good to raise a child too naively.

But she couldn’t bear it.

Xu Zhaixiao was like a blank sheet of white paper; she couldn’t bear to drop even a single drop of ink on it.

After all, she was still here; she would protect him a bit longer.

Later, she thought, later she would teach him differently.

She wanted her child to stay naive a little longer.

But this was candy.

After the apocalypse, it became very hard to get.

At least, she had no way to provide Xu Zhaixiao with candy.

But she often described to him how delicious candy was.

She said how tasty it was.

When she had gone shopping at the supermarket and saw the candy, she wanted to buy some for Xu Zhaixiao.

But currently, storing food was their priority.

Candy wasn’t a necessity.

So, she restrained herself and did not buy any.

Now seeing all this candy, and so much of it, she suspected Xu Zhaixiao might have sneaked into the supermarket and stolen the candy.
