Chapter 447: Chapter 443: Scum like this, just kill them!
Jiang Yan half-squatted, the knife in her hand sharp enough to cut steel, gently sliding across Qin Lei’s face. Her words were as icy as a ghost whispering, "Xue Miaomiao—where is she?"
Under the cold and hard touch, Qin Lei felt as if his cheek was being gouged out by acid, waves of sharp pain radiating from it.
His broken hands and feet throbbed with agony, almost driving him to unconsciousness.
If he’d known this earlier, he would never have tangled with her.
She was one of those who had left the AS Zone with Song Haitao and his team, and returned alive...
Qin Lei’s terror-filled eyes suddenly widened further. "They... They deliberately concealed information about you?!"
"Where is Xue Miaomiao?" Jiang Yan’s patience was wearing thin. She placed the tip of the blade against his one remaining ear. "If you still don’t understand what I’m saying, I might as well cut this one off too."
"Jiang Yan, I—I beg you, I really don’t know!!!" Qin Lei shivered uncontrollably, his teeth chattering. "He—he came here secretly once, a long time ago. Then, after the base purged people from Flame Base and Musen Base, he never returned!!"
Jiang Yan was taken aback.
She didn’t expect that the enigmatic Xue Miaomiao, appearing and disappearing like a ghost, had actually visited Yaoben Base.
But it must have been when Mo Zhongcheng and Mo Shuaifeng were present.
Jiang Yan stood up, pulled a mask from her belongings, and strapped it on. The knife’s tip pointed toward a nearby small door. "Where is the key to the room?"
"It’s—it’s on me." Even before Qin Lei finished speaking, an access card floated out of his pocket and hovered in the air.
His eyes widened as he froze in fright. "Jiang—Jiang—Yan, you—you—"
A vine snatched the access card and slid it over the small door’s scanner. Hua Bao turned its head back. "Mom, it also requires fingerprints and retina scans."
Jiang Yan nodded slightly. "Bring him over."
"Okay." Qin Lei, who hadn’t yet recovered from the shock, found his remaining body being lifted into the air by an unseen force, along with his severed hand that had been lying on the ground.
Both terrified and wracked with pain, Qin Lei fainted before Hua Bao could drag him over to the small door.
"Slap!" A blood-streaked vine whipped across his face, ripping his skin open. Screaming in unbearable pain, Qin Lei jolted back into consciousness.
The door opened.
Hua Bao found the switch and turned the lights on.
Jiang Yan’s pupils contracted sharply as she took in the scene alongside the pungent smell of formalin.
Inside were several rooms. One room contained numerous beast cages, each housing women.
Their ages ranged from their teens to their thirties.
"Mom, they’re all dead..."
Shattered clothes, ripped flesh, and brutally disfigured corpses...
A larger room was outfitted with an operating table, and beside it lay a pile of men stacked together.
They had hollow eyes and missing organs.
However, their grayish-blue skin suggested they had been dead for a long time.
Jiang Yan bit her lip and forced down her rage. "Where’s everyone else?"
She suddenly regretted merely disabling Qin Lei by cutting off his limbs. It felt far too lenient!
What she should’ve done was pull out a small hammer and shatter his hands and legs, piece by piece!
Qin Lei shivered under the murderous aura she exuded. The excessive blood loss clouded his vision. "What others?"
Jiang Yan chuckled coldly. "This place is such a large operation; surely it wasn’t just a few of you, right?"
Suddenly, Qin Lei felt a rope tightening around his neck.
"Previously, Xue Miaomiao’s men came by every month. They did the work. I only had to supply the people."
"Zzzrrr~ zzzrrr~" The walkie-talkie buzzed, and Li Haoyang’s voice came through. "Miss Jiang, have you returned to your dormitory?"
Jiang Yan glanced at the time but didn’t respond immediately.
"Hua Bao, go take a look." Jiang Yan pointed toward the corridor adjacent to the operating room.
Hua Bao dashed off. "Understood, Mom."
Seconds later, it returned. "There’s a secret passage here that leads outside the base."
Jiang Yan interrogated Qin Lei a few more times but, finding no additional useful information, motioned for Hua Bao to toss him onto the table.
Qin Lei fainted once again.
"Mom, what now?"
Without speaking, Jiang Yan mulled it over for a second before pulling a small timed incendiary device out from her belongings.
*
Ten minutes later, Jiang Yan returned to the original corridor.
By now, she had entered the Space to remove her bloodied clothing and change into an identical outfit with matching shoes.
Suddenly, alarms blared loudly throughout the corridor.
"Zzzrrr~ zzzrrr~" The walkie-talkie buzzed again.
Jiang Yan picked it up. "Haoyang, I’m almost there. Was busy earlier and didn’t hear it."
"Oh, good to hear, Miss Jiang. Please rest well." Li Haoyang sighed in relief.
Jiang Yan asked, "By the way, I heard the alarms in the base. Did something happen?"
Li Haoyang: "A small explosion and fire occurred in a long-unused temporary warehouse on the base’s side."
"It won’t affect the base interior, will it?"
"No, every Hive zone of the base operates as separate divisions. Even a nuclear explosion wouldn’t penetrate. Besides, that area isn’t technically part of the base." Li Haoyang explained confidently, then added, "Miss Jiang, rest well. Leader Mo asked me to inform you to take a look tomorrow morning at the ship we’ll be using for the mission."
"Oh, the Snow Dragon?"
"The Snow Dragon is for Antarctic research. We’ve modified this one, and its name has been changed to Snapdragon. In addition to the icebreaker, there are other vessels involved—details are unsuitable for discussing over a walkie-talkie, but you’ll see them tomorrow."
"Alright."
Jiang Yan disconnected the call. Glancing briefly toward the brightly lit base supermarket filled with people, she decided to stroll through it for a bit.
Upon returning to her dormitory, she noticed Ye Qing and Zhou Haoyue guarding her room from afar.
Ye Qing paced back and forth, spotting her immediately. "Jiang Yan!"
He appeared to have just returned from training, as his neck collar was damp and his forehead still glistened with sweat.
"Sister Yan!" The four younger ones rushed over with worried faces.
"Aunt Su, Sister Yan is back!" Miao Miao shouted toward Su Dai’s room.
"Coming!" Su Dai replied, wiping water off her clothes as she and Sun Jingtao emerged with Kong Wu from the room.
Jiang Yan was confused. "What’s going on with you all?"
"Let’s go inside first." Su Dai said, pulling Jiang Yan into the room.
Inside, someone was cooking. The aroma of rice filled the air.
"Are you okay?" Su Dai and Ye Qing inspected her front and back, confirming there were no abnormalities before collectively breathing a sigh of relief.
Still baffled, Jiang Yan added, "Yeah, I’m fine."
"Wasn’t there an alarm earlier? Old Sun quickly asked Zhao Yougong, and Zhao Yougong contacted some people. We found out that a fire and explosion occurred in a temporary warehouse on the base’s side."
Jiang Yan: "And?"
Su Dai lowered her voice slightly. "Leader Qin’s brother, that scumbag Qin Lei, is dead. Apparently, surveillance captured footage of him entering that corridor leading to the warehouse with you."
"The fire was extinguished, but several headless charred corpses were found... DNA testing is underway to confirm their identities."
"Serves him right! That scum deserved to die ages ago!" Su Dai concluded, squeezing Jiang Yan’s hand. "Jiang Yan, you’ve rid us of a scourge. Old Sun and I have discussed it—if they come looking for trouble, we’ll take off together and stop getting involved with them!"
Jiang Yan laughed lightly at those words. "What makes you so sure it was me?"
Truthfully, she couldn’t care less if they pinned this on her. Killing someone like Qin Lei was no big deal to her.
Besides, apart from the cameras, they wouldn’t find any solid evidence.
She had planted the incendiary device merely to avoid exposing Hua Bao’s ability to decapitate so many people.
Realizing she might’ve misspoken, Su Dai quickly corrected herself.
"Of course, you didn’t kill him. But I do believe you’re capable. And if so, it was the right call!"
"Oh, and there’s something else—something bizarre—that Captain Zhao just shared with us," Su Dai continued gossiping as if she were a news anchor. "Remember that virus outbreak at Yaoben Base?"
Jiang Yan: "Uh-huh?"
"So many people died back then. To avoid viral persistence and spread, the base ordered all those corpses to be cremated. But guess what happened—"
Sun Jingtao sighed deeply. "Dear, just get to the point... No need for suspense in front of Jiang Yan."
Su Dai leaned in confidentially. "Those corpses were secretly transported, and the destination was that temporary warehouse."
Her words caused Jiang Yan to recall those mutants and bodies at Yunding Tower, deliberately injected with viruses and hormones.
"What do you think Qin Lei was doing with those virus-infected corpses? That pampered scumbag doesn’t have it in him to be crazy like Xue Miaomiao, right?"
Jiang Yan inhaled deeply. "Qin Lei and Xue Miaomiao were working together in secret."
Sun Jingtao and Kong Wu’s expressions froze, overwhelmed with disbelief. "..."
Ye Qing clenched his fists and punched the wall in outrage.
"This Xue Miaomiao—I swear, I’ll put an end to him myself, even if it’s the last thing I do in this lifetime!"
