Apocalypse: After Being Reborn, I Stocked Up on All Supplies -
Chapter 445 - 441: Taking the Blame for Her
Chapter 445: Chapter 441: Taking the Blame for Her
"Nuclear radiation dose... 300 millisieverts?" This was the first time Jiang Yan had ever heard such a technical term, and she immediately looked bewildered.
Just as she was about to ask Hua Bao, the "light computer," Mo Jingsheng raised his hand to interrupt Researcher Zhang and said coldly, "Just give us the results."
"Understood, Leader Mo!" Researcher Zhang, who was old enough to be Mo Jingsheng’s grandfather, held deep respect and awe for this young and decisive leader of the base.
He wiped the sweat off his brow, paused for a few seconds to choose his words carefully, and said succinctly,
"The test results reveal:
1. As the ice and snow have recently melted, the water ecosystems have undergone significant changes, including mutations among marine species, the mingling of saltwater and freshwater organisms, and, most concerning, indications of severe nuclear contamination.
The source of this nuclear contamination may stem from the previous nuclear leak in Japan or could partially be attributed to the self-destructive explosion in Xiangcheng.
Of course, we cannot rule out contamination originating from other countries or regions; or, in the worst-case scenario—"
Researcher Zhang paused, his frail body trembling slightly, "—from releases conducted by the Catastrophe Simulation Laboratory."
"After all, the Catastrophe Laboratory has the capability to produce acid snow. Adding some radioactive substances wouldn’t be difficult."
Mo Jingsheng listened attentively, his dark brows furrowing deeply. "Anything else?"
"The latest data indicates that ultraviolet radiation in the air is intensifying, and the oxygen levels are diminishing. We speculate that not only is the ozone layer thinning, but the atmosphere itself may also be thinning."
While Researcher Zhang was reporting, Li Haoyang quietly stood nearby.
He listened for a moment, then instinctively glanced at both Mo Jingsheng and Jiang Yan.
Just that fleeting glance caused a faint shift in Li Haoyang’s expression.
In the post-apocalypse era, humanity hadn’t seen sunshine for a very long time.
Mo Jingsheng’s pale white skin was expected; however, those damp, reddened eyes and slightly swollen lips...
Ah, it must have been due to the overwhelming emotions of a sibling reunion, no doubt.
Except—
It seemed like this appeared right after their shared lunch earlier.
This realization piqued Li Haoyang’s curiosity, prompting him to cast another glance at Jiang Yan.
The latter remained calm, as if deeply contemplating Researcher Zhang’s remarks.
Li Haoyang suddenly felt he was overthinking things and quickly pinched his fingers to rein in his wandering thoughts.
Researcher Zhang continued, "Based on this data, it’s highly likely that in the future, external animals and plants will become unsafe for consumption."
Mo Jingsheng clenched his fist, his thumb and forefinger lightly rubbing against each other. "Go on."
"We’ve also detected a positive development—the planet’s magnetic field properties are recovering. This means compasses can soon come back into use.
Although their accuracy may not be perfect, they will greatly assist our subsequent exploration activities."
Mo Jingsheng exhaled slightly and nodded, "Good, very good."
"Additionally, considering the consequences of intensified ultraviolet radiation, the base urgently needs to produce a batch of UV-resistant protective clothing." Researcher Zhang finished and quietly let out a sigh of relief. "That’s all, Leader Mo. My report is complete."
Mo Jingsheng gave him an approving look. "Have Dr. Song and Leader Qin been informed about these findings?"
Researcher Zhang responded, "Leader Mo, not yet. As soon as we received the data, we came straight to report to you."
Mo Jingsheng raised his hand and pinched the bridge of his nose before instructing Li Haoyang, "Notify the core team; we’ll hold a meeting in the conference room in ten minutes."
"Understood!" Li Haoyang saluted and turned to leave.
"Researcher Zhang, go and prepare these materials for synchronization as well."
"Got it, Leader Mo." Researcher Zhang also turned to leave.
Jiang Yan had wandered around the base the entire morning, just about to find an excuse to slip away when Mo Jingsheng spoke up, "Jiang Yan, what Researcher Zhang mentioned will impact our subsequent actions. You should join us."
It wasn’t a question; it was a statement.
Jiang Yan: "...Alright."
Mo Jingsheng suddenly gave her a probing look and said, "Jiang Yan, about that life-saving potion—"
Jiang Yan’s heart skipped a beat. She feigned calmness and looked back at him with an innocent expression: "?"
Perhaps noticing that his expression had become too serious, Mo Jingsheng’s lips curved in a faint smile. "Shiyao specifically asked me yesterday. I told her it was something handed down from above. I don’t have any remaining stock; I gave everything to you."
Jiang Yan hadn’t expected him to cover for her so thoroughly. "...Thank you. But isn’t blaming ’above’ a bit— risky?"
At this, Mo Jingsheng chuckled.
"I believe that if it wasn’t Kong Wu but rather Shiyao, or anyone else in the team, who was in danger, as long as you had the life-saving potion, you’d use it to save them, wouldn’t you?"
Jiang Yan nodded. "Of course."
"Then that’s why I trust you, and ’above’ trusts you. We’re willing to take responsibility for this." Mo Jingsheng spoke confidently and turned to pick up a laser pen from the desk, focusing on the central map on the wall.
The map was decorated with colorful markers, indicating altitude, latitude, and longitude data.
Jiang Yan had thought he would press her more about the potion.
But Mo Jingsheng seemed uninterested and chose to brush it off directly.
This made Jiang Yan breathe a sigh of relief.
Still—what did he mean by "above didn’t choose wrong"?
It sounded as though he had an uncanny understanding of their intentions.
Jiang Yan pondered this sentiment momentarily and glanced at Mo Jingsheng’s dark bluish eye bags. Remembering Li Haoyang’s comment from earlier about how Mo Jingsheng had slept less than two hours since returning to the base, she said,
"Aren’t you going to rest?"
"I’m not tired," Mo Jingsheng replied before immersing himself in the map again.
Jiang Yan rolled her eyes and rummaged through her backpack. As a thought crossed her mind, she retrieved two bottles of "Starbucks" coffee from her space and handed one to him. "Here, have a drink."
"Thank you." Mo Jingsheng took the bottle and put it on the desk without opening it.
*
This was Jiang Yan’s first time attending an official high-level meeting at the base.
The meeting was both efficient and professional, but due to the breadth of issues covered, it wasn’t over until nearly six in the evening.
After the meeting, Mo Jingsheng still needed to discuss the Yaoben Base’s upcoming defense details with Qin Zepeng privately, so he arranged for Li Haoyang to escort Jiang Yan back.
Once outside the core office area, Jiang Yan stopped Li Haoyang. "Haoyang, I can manage on my own."
Li Haoyang hesitated. "For safety reasons, the pathways near the core office area are subject to periodic adjustments. Miss Jiang, are you certain you can navigate them?"
The "adjustments" he referred to involved the flexible configuration of the Hive doors along the path.
These adjustments made this stretch of corridor resemble a labyrinth.
Fortunately, Jiang Yan had Hua Bao.
Jiang Yan confidently replied, "Don’t worry, I’ll be fine."
"Alright, just make sure to call me on the intercom once you’ve safely reached your destination." Li Haoyang checked the time. At this hour, the base workforce was wrapping up their training sessions, and the areas outside the core zone would be bustling. He wasn’t too worried about her safety as a young woman.
"Okay." Jiang Yan bid Li Haoyang farewell and headed toward her dormitory.
Halfway there, a familiar yet unwelcome figure appeared before her.
"Well, if it isn’t Lady Jiang!" It was Qin Lei.
When Jiang Yan first returned to the base, Zhao Yougong and Lin Xiaohui had shared some bits of gossip regarding Qin Lei, the infamous Mr. Qin, whose bad reputation preceded him.
