Chapter 741: The Dark Erosion

Yarin's POV:

A few calm days passed, during which we gradually became familiar with Charlies Family and occasionally met people from the front house. Most of them were officials or merchants who, for their reputation, couldn't get too close to us. Otherwise, there would inevitably be gossip about flattery and pleasing.

Eden was no longer as timid as he was at the beginning; at least now, he no longer avoided us. This relieved us as we were staying in someone else's house, and making the host's relatives feel suffocated wouldn't be right!

Today was Cynthia's day for classes, so she woke up earlier than usual because the family tutor began teaching at seven o'clock. There was no sign of her at the breakfast table; she was in her room, struggling to survive in the sea of knowledge with her math book.

This made me nostalgic for school, even though I wasn't a good student who liked studying. "So, what's Sivir Academy like?" I asked Eden.

Eden replied softly, "It's very good, very large, spacious buildings, and excellent facilities. The teachers are knowledgeable and responsible."

I noticed that he didn't comment on the students at Sivir Academy.

"I heard that even in junior high, university professors come to give lectures. Is that true?" "Yes, every Friday afternoon, professors from various fields come to lecture the junior and senior high students. There are several topics to choose from each time."

"Wow, that sounds great. Have you attended any lectures, Eden?"

"I've attended a few, but they were a bit too advanced for me. I just went to listen for fun." "What topics have you heard about, and which one did you like the most?"

"I only go when I have nothing else to do. As for the topics, there are history, literature, physics, astronomy... I don't understand them, so I can't say if I liked them."

In any case, the conversation with Eden sparked my longing for Sivir Academy.

I hadn't contacted Lily for several days, and although I knew friends didn't need to be on the phone all the time, it still made me feel a bit down.

What was she doing now? How was her injury? Was she planning her escape, or had she already succeeded in running away?

Whenever I opened the chat window with her, I wanted to ask something, but my fingers hovered over the keyboard, unable to type anything.

This mixture of wanting to get closer but being afraid frustrated me.

But today, Lily suddenly contacted me.

"I've successfully escaped from home," she said. "I've wanted to escape for a long time, but my mother seemed to have noticed something and arranged people to guard my room, so I couldn't find a chance to leave. But luckily, there is always a way out. After practicing for many days, I could finally control the bone rope freely, so I used it to escape under the protection of the guards."

Control...

I recalled how Anthony used the bone rope to control hostages, the rough hemp rope piercing through people's joints and muscles with layers of crimson blood, dark as ink.

That cruel scene was still unforgettable.

"Control..." I heard myself say hoarsely. "That bone rope... Are you, are you okay, Lily? Those guards... Forget it, where are you now? If you want to go to Golden Bell Pack, I can help you."

Lily seemed to know what I was thinking and immediately said, "What are you thinking? Would I hurt innocent guards just to escape? This may look like a master-servant type, but I don't need to use such bloody means. I just need to bind people."

"Besides, it seems that I can now freely lengthen and shorten it. I don't know how long it can stretch, maybe it's infinite, maybe there's a limit, who knows? I'll try it out when I'm settled."

Hearing her say this, I felt relieved. What surprised me the most was that my focus wasn't on the fact that Lily might use the bone rope to harm innocent people but that even if she did, I would unconditionally stand by her side to cover for her.

Oh my god, at that moment, my reason, morals, and self-control were all gone!

I knew Lily was kind, yet I still subjectively assumed she might do something like Anthony. I thought I had the correct moral standards and legal awareness, but my first reaction was to cover for Lily's nonexistent crime.

Unconsciously, my thoughts were becoming wicked.

I didn't know why, but perhaps the demon's power was slowly influencing me. Even though the goddess helped seal the connection Azazel had established with my soul, even though Moon Palace courtyard was deterring any possible evil in my spiritual world, the power of evil was still quietly changing me despite making so many preparations.

This time, I realized it, but what about next time? And the time after that? When the power of evil completely invaded my mind and body, when the hostage was twisted, morals lost, and chaos ensued, would I still notice the anomaly? Or would the anomaly become my new 'normal'?

"Yarin? Hey, are you listening? Are you okay?" Lily's voice pulled me back from those dark imaginings to the real world.
