Alpha's Rejected Mate Returns as Queen -
Chapter 727: Interrogation and Pity
Chapter 727: Interrogation and Pity
Carolyn's POV:
The hot tea steamed up, causing tears in my father's eyes.
"Why don't you come to see her?" His teardrops seemed a catalyst, pushing me back into that cold, indifferent outsider.
I asked too harshly, and it might hurt him. I knew I shouldn't do this or question my father. But I couldn't feel any pity and found it inexplicable even to myself. I had to get to the bottom of it.
My father looked at me pleadingly as if to say, "Don't ask." But I didn't want to back down, and I didn't want to change the topic as if nothing had happened.
It was as if I had become a different person, possessed by the spirit of the Adele upstairs or the pure white witch who died decades ago. Stubbornly, I asked, "Why did you abandon her? Why did you ignore her? Why did you leave her here and pretend it wasn't the absurd extension of the tragedy you left behind in your youth?"
I saw my reflection in the glass window, with such cold eyes and a serious expression, as if I were not his daughter but a judge from another time judging his sins.
In the window's reflection, I became a monster that tore down my father's fragile psychological defense. He lowered his head and grasped his hair tightly, letting out a desperate moan from his tight throat.
His tears should have dried up when the war ended, and his wife passed away, but the ghost from decades ago brought back the generosity he hadn't used up yet.
"I... I... I don't know. I shouldn't have done that..." He cried, restraining himself as if afraid of alarming others in the room.
But even if he cried out loud like a child, it wouldn't matter because no one would mocka duke, an Alpha. They would pretend not to see and then forget the taste of tears forever when they left this room.
My father broke down. His emotional defenses, erected since he arrived here, were like a condemned building marked with crimson 'demolition'. My questioning was the final explosive, effortlessly blasting away all the guarded protection.
"Anna, I'm sorry. I'm sorry to you and our daughter, Adele... I'm a b*stard. I pretended everything was fine, but I ruined her, I ruined her-"
"You didn't ruin her; Adele ruined herself." I heard myself say coldly, a voice that sounded nothing like mine. "Even though it wasn't what she expected, she ruined herself even though she had no choice. You didn't even know she existed, so you didn't have a chance to do anything. It was already too late when you learned everything."
My father looked up in shock. Tears and snot made him look like a drenched old rooster, pitiable and despicable.
"That's what you tell yourself, isn't it? These are the facts, so you can pretend you did nothing wrong and were too late. Kafka took your daughter away, preventing you from having a father-daughter relationship.
"You already begged the queen to treat her well, which was more than righteous enough. Even though she carries your blood, even though she's the only child left from your past love, the past is gone. The war is over, and your lover has passed away. This fruit of an absurd love is not what you hoped for, and, naturally, it's not your responsibility anymore."
Stop, please stop.
I heard myself shouting inside my mind.
Stop saying this; he was already broken down. These extreme accusations wouldn't change anything!
But my heart seemed to split into two halves. On one side, I didn't want to be so extreme; on the other, I retorted, "Am I not right in what I said? Isn't this just an excuse he's given himself?"
The heart on the other side mocked the heart on this side, saying, "You're defending him only because he's your father. If you were locked up here today, would you understand his indifference and avoidance as having good reasons?"
It was too sharp; it judged my father first and then me. But what it said was not wrong-I would naturally defend him because he was my father!
I could say those cold words to him, which also showed that I was condemning his actions, right?
The moment I realized this, severe dizziness suddenly hit me, and the magic detector on the coffee table started beeping sharply, with the pointer swinging wildly.
People were startled, looking over, and I couldn't help but kneel on the ground, feeling as if something was pulling my brain forcefully, trying to tear it out of my body.
"Are you okay?"
The prison guard cautiously approached me, and at the same time, the footsteps on the stairs became chaotic. Just as Master Mary appeared, a giant black wolf suddenly smashed through the window, skillfully avoiding the guards' obstruction, and pounced on me, showing its sharp teeth.
I couldn't react, and the black wolf suddenly let out a loud howl, which seemed to scrape against my eardrums like a sharp pain, reaching straight into my brain.
I seemed to hear someone screaming in pain, and then the pulling sensation in my brain disappeared.
