Chapter 712: The Bone Rope
Chapter 712: The Bone Rope
Yarin's POV:
Being the only daughter, the Southern Duke couldn't help but be overly nervous about his daughter.
It was said that he strongly opposed his daughter going alone to the human territory. However, Aunt Carolyn secretly ran off on her own. When the Southern Duke sent people to find her, she had already completed the enrollment process and officially become a student at a university.
Seeing that it was a done deal, the Southern Duke had no choice but to agree to let his daughter study abroad.
So, when my mother decided to open the border, the Southern Duke responded very positively. Although the Southern Pack didn't share borders with human territory, the opening would make it easier for him to visit his daughter.
We thought that Aunt Carolyn's decision to study abroad was just a temporary whim, but she surprised us by staying away for more than a decade. She finished her undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees, reportedly earning ten degrees-something rare not only among the nobility but also within the entire werewolf community.
I hadn't seen her in three to five years, so I was really looking forward to her return- whenever she came back, she always brought exciting news from the human world!
On a rare quiet night, I hesitated and sent a message to Lily.
"Good evening, what are you doing?"
After sending it, I carefully observed and thought about these dry words. The more I thought, the more I felt they were inappropriate. I was about to withdraw the message, but Lily
replied.
"Lying in a hospital bed, doctors are blabbering, under surveillance by security, and my mom appears and disappears like a ghost. Life is extremely boring."
Even through the screen, I could feel Lily's resentment.
"How's your recovery going?"
I sent another message.
... Sigh, it still felt dry.
"Okay, the doctor said there's no problem. I should be able to leave the wheelchair and move around the day after tomorrow."
"By the way, I have to tell you something.
"You remember that rope the dwarf used to control people? I thought it had been confiscated but found it in my bed this morning.
"Pretty scary, right? I was startled and told Alfred to take it away. But the rope was there again when I woke up from my noon nap."
The rope?
Anthony's bone rope?
This dangerous thing had unexpectedly shown up again and in such an eerie way. It was hard for me not to suspect that Anthony was behind this. I immediately advised Lily to stay far away from it and have someone throw it away, or better yet, find the werewolf grandmasters to seal that damn rope.
But Lily said, "I left it because something even more miraculous happened afterward.
"I found that I seem to be able to control it. When I saw the rope in my hand, it listened to me like a snake in the Indian flutist's jar. I'm convinced that I can really control it!
"I still don't know what's happening, but it seems quite handy.
"Of course, I'm not into sadistic bondage play. But wandering alone outside, it's good to have a few more tricks up my sleeve."
Lily sent a long string of messages, and I could tell she was excited because she unexpectedly gained a handy weapon.
But that was Anthony's bone rope, which Azazel gave him. How could it suddenly recognize Lily as its master without any reason?
I still felt something was off, so I advised Lily to have the werewolf grandmasters take a look in case she fell into someone else's trap.
"I know this thing is suspicious, but I have no choice," Lily said. "I must slip away again before my mother realizes it. For that, I need more powerful abilities to protect myself."
I knew their mother-daughter relationship wasn't good, but Lily's words now seemed like they were on the verge of becoming enemies. The situation suddenly changed drastically, so I asked, "What happened?"
Lily didn't respond to my text. A few minutes later, she called me.
I answered the phone, and Lily asked, "Hey, is anyone around you?"
Her voice was very low and muffled as if she was covering her mouth, afraid someone might hear her.
"No, I'm alone," I unconsciously lowered my voice.
Lily sighed in relief and said, "I can only tell you about this. Please don't tell anyone."
What was making her so nervous?
"My mother has always wanted to send me to Lycan Pack for schooling, networking, and all that stuff," she said. "But you know how much I hate being controlled, so I refused many times. However, my mother seems determined to send me away this time.
"I overheard her discussing with her secretary, planning to fake medical records to create an impression that I need more treatment and then use that as an excuse to send me to Lycan Pack, which has better medical resources. This way, even my grandfather won't be able to stop her.
"I'm going crazy. She had almost given up on this idea before, so why suddenly must she see it through now?"
