Chapter 541: The Vials of Smoke

The church bells rang, echoing through the town.

Cheers and chatter were heard even from afar as people talked about the upcoming celebration.

Flower petals were scattered on the ground as several children were carrying baskets full of them.

"They really made the wedding public," Joseph whispered in amusement as he looked at the surroundings.

"Yeah, I thought they would make it private," Gastone replied as he shook his head.

Gastone couldn’t believe that he would work with one of Lucia’s admirers, but he swallowed his pride to prevent Lucia from making a mistake.

However, Gastone was conflicted with himself. First, Giselle, who was Daco’s long lost mother was in the human world, abusing children and making money out of them. Then Giselle was targeting Lucia, one of the children who had escaped.

Gastone would have killed Giselle if she were just an ordinary human with no connections with him, but she wasn’t.

Then, there was Daniel, the one who was buying the children’s meat and made an income from it. Creating a highest grade of meat products.

In addition to that, Lucia was trying to get into Daniel’s world to destroy it. To end the suffering of the orphaned children and get her revenge. She also wanted to kill Giselle with her hands.

"I kinda miss my old life at this point," Gastone whispered to himself as he took a deep breath.

Even though Gastone was still a crown prince. He tackled different scenarios of training for being a future King and he was good with it.

However, problem solving was where Gastone flunked at.

"Old life, hah!" Joseph huffed as he kicked several flower petals from the ground in annoyance.

Joseph folded his arms as they stood behind one of the stone columns near the church entrance. The bells continued ringing, louder now, as if mocking their hesitation.

"Don’t tell me you’re going to back out now," Joseph muttered, his tone laced with bitterness. "You were the one who said we had to stop her."

Gastone didn’t answer right away. His sharp eyes followed the crowds entering the cathedral—nobles, merchants, and even commoners—all eager to witness the union between Lucia and Daniel.

A public wedding indeed.

A perfect cover for the darkest kind of manipulation.

Their reputation would be secured with the public and they would become a figure for others to follow.

"I’m not backing out," Gastone finally said, his voice low and heavy. "But I’m not going to act recklessly either. If we barge in without a plan, we’re only going to make things worse."

Joseph rolled his eyes. "And if we wait too long, she’ll say her vows and become his bride— then what? We write her a letter saying, ’Hey, sorry we were late, but best of luck with your sadistic cannibal husband’?"

Gastone flinched. Joseph’s words struck too close to home.

"Don’t push me," Gastone muttered.

Joseph’s frustration crackled like a flame. "You think I want to be here working with you? We’re not allies, Gastone— we’re both idiots who care about the same woman."

Gastone turned sharply. "I don’t care about her the same way you do."

Joseph narrowed his eyes. "No, you just throw yourself into fire for her and keep pretending you don’t burn."

Before Gastone could retort, a sudden hush fell over the crowd. The music began— the soft notes of an organ— and then they saw her.

Lucia.

Clad in a flowing ivory gown, veil trailing behind her, she walked with unnatural poise down the rose-strewn aisle. Her face was hidden, but even from this distance, Gastone could tell she was tense. Her hands trembled ever so slightly as she clutched the bouquet.

"She’s scared," Gastone whispered. "She doesn’t want this.

"I know," Joseph replied grimly. "But she’s doing it anyway."

"Indeed," Gastone replied in a soft, sad tone.

"Then what the hell are we waiting for?" Joseph snapped.

Gastone’s eyes scanned the guards stationed outside the church. They were dressed as ceremonial sentries, but Gastone recognized the telltale posture of trained mercenaries. Daniel had expected interference.

"It’s a trap," Gastone muttered. "Daniel’s using this wedding to draw us out or worse, to silence Lucia."

Joseph’s face twisted. "To silence her? Maybe that Daniel guy finally smelled Lucia’s hesitations and you still want to wait?"

Gastone didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a pendant shaped like a rose, the one that Rosina gave to teleport him back to the werewolf realm.

"What are you doing?" Joseph asked.

"Causing a scene," Gastone said. "You said we had to stop her, right?"

"You know, you haven’t told me any of your plans, yet," Joseph whispered nervously. Even though he wanted to save Lucia, he didn’t want to go beyond the point where he would spend the rest of his life in jail.

"Did you bring the items that I told you about?" Gastone looked back at Joseph, raising his eyebrows.

"Yes, of course," Joseph pulled out a bag, which contained the ones that Gastone told him to bring.

During that time, the people were forming around the church to witness the wedding. Their eyes were on the bride standing outside.

Gastone took the bag from Joseph and opened it just enough to check the contents— vials of smoke bombs. Just the ones he needed.

"Good," Gastone muttered. "We’re going to need all of this."

"Want to tell me the plan now?" Joseph asked, eyes darting around at the growing crowd. "Or are we going to improvise like lunatics?"

Gastone smirked faintly. "We’re going to give them a moment they’ll never forget."

With a flick of Gastone’s wrist, he slipped the pendant into his palm. It pulsed faintly with magic. "We have two minutes before the ceremony starts," Gastone said. "When the priest asks if anyone objects— that’s our cue. But we’re not going to yell it from the back."

Joseph looked alarmed. "Then how—?"

Gastone took one of the vials and tossed it lightly in his hand. "We’re going in."
