Chapter 512: The Broken Bond

Chapter 512: The Broken Bond

Lucia’s mouth hung open in shock, and her body froze. She didn’t expect Daniel to propose out of nowhere and publicly during his birthday party.

"What are you doing?" Lucia whispered in disbelief as she looked around the guests, waiting for her reply.

"Can’t you see? I’m proposing to you," Daniel smiled widely. He felt so proud of himself for doing it publicly since he was confident Lucia would say yes, as he had never experienced getting rejected before.

Lucia frowned. She walked closer to Daniel and tried to talk it out without embarrassing him.

"Daniel, we are not even dating. Why would I marry you out of nowhere?" Lucia whispered lowly to avoid eavesdropping from the crowd.

"But I like you..." Daniel replied childishly. He pulled a box from his pocket, opened it, and there it was, a giant diamond ring that sparkled against the light.

The young ladies around them nearly fainted at the sight. They were filled with jealousy at how Lucia was picked as the future wife instead of them.

"... you are the only one who treats me differently. I feel the need to get your attention instead of the other way around!" Daniel continued loudly. He wasn’t shy about telling everyone how he felt.

Lucia bit her lips as she wanted to smack Daniel. A part of her was happy that her flirting with Daniel actually worked so well that it ended up that way. However, marriage was a different story.

"Daniel..." a familiar voice spoke through the crowd and made its way to the center. It was Giselle. "Is this the girl you are talking about?"

Daniel snapped his eyes at Giselle, looking pissed at how she interrupted his romantic proposal.

Upon seeing Giselle’s face after several years of running away from her, Lucia felt goosebumps all over her body. Her muscles became stiff as her fight and flight response was triggered heavily.

"Yes, this is Lucia. The one I like the most," Daniel replied sternly. His eyes signalled Giselle to get out of their space.

Giselle smiled sweetly as she looked at Lucia from head to toe. Her nose sniffed her scent, but she got nothing. "You’re beautiful," she replied before turning her back to leave.

However, Lucia remained still. Her heart began palpating as memories of her past washed over her like a broken record.

"Anyways, Lucia. Answer me, please. They are waiting," Daniel whispered, tilting his body to the side since his knee began to ache.

"I..." Lucia whispered. Her brain was still in chaos on what she would do next— to answer Daniel or to chase Giselle. That was when her eyes drifted toward Gastone.

Lucia felt her body relax instantly at the mere sight of Gastone. She breathed out the tension out of her body as her eyes fixed on him. However, she still needed an instant decision.

Deep inside, Lucia wanted to reject Daniel’s proposal and asked him to become a lover first while she worked on the side. However, she also wanted to know Gastone’s thoughts about it.

"Lucia?" Daniel asked when Lucia became silent for a few seconds. He followed her gaze, and it led him to Gastone.

Gastone felt as if he was punched in the stomach. It also surprised him that Daniel asked for marriage instead. If he had known, he would stop him, but it was too late.

’Lucia... I’m sorry,’ Gastone thought as he knew he needed to make sacrifices for his mate. Even though it hurt his core so much that he wanted to die instead.

Gastone stared at Lucia and knew she was waiting for his decision. With a heavy heart, he forced a smile and nod. It was enough for Lucia to understand.

Lucia’s breath hitched upon seeing Gastone smile at her. Her body told her to run toward him, embrace him, and never let go. But his nod told her otherwise.

It was a sign of approval— an acceptance that tore Lucia apart inside, and she didn’t know why she felt that way.

Lucia turned her attention back to Daniel, who was still on one knee, holding the sparkling diamond ring with a hopeful expression. Her heart ached. She needed to make a choice, one that would define her future.

"I..." Lucia began, her voice wavering. She glanced again at Gastone, who was still standing there, his eyes filled with encouragement and sorrow.

"Lucia, I want you," Daniel insisted, a hint of desperation creeping into his tone. "I don’t want to be just friends."

Taking a deep breath, Lucia tried her best to settle her raging emotions. She stared at Daniel’s eyes as she spoke the words she dreaded to say.

"Y-yes... I w-will ma...rry..." Lucia stuttered as she couldn’t bring herself to speak those phrases out loud, but it was enough for Daniel.

"Yes!" Daniel exclaimed loudly, pulling Lucia’s hand and proudly placing the ring on her ring finger. Then he looked at the crowd, signalling them to cheer for his future bride. "SHE SAID YES! I’M GETTING MARRIED!"

Behind the loud cheers, Lucia wanted to crawl to the ground and never go out. However, she sucked it up and forced a smile as the crowd started congratulating them.

However, Lucia’s eyes were searching for Gastone. She wanted to see him, but he was nowhere to be found.

On the other hand, when Lucia accepted Daniel’s proposal, It was a clear sign that the mate bond between Lucia and Gastone was broken into two.

But only Gastone was able to feel the pain of the broken bond. He hurriedly left the ballroom in a rush as it hurt both his heart and soul. He felt the need to shift and run somewhere to cry out the pain.

"Oh Goddess," Gastone looked up to the moon. A single tear escaped his eyes as he hurriedly wiped it. It was the most painful thing he had experienced throughout his life, and he couldn’t believe that he let go of his mate that easily.
