Chapter 501: The Brown Envelope
Chapter 501: The Brown Envelope
A brown folder with a stack of papers was at the bottom of the drawer. It wasn’t out of the ordinary, but Lucia became curious about it.
"Hmm, what is this?" Lucia muttered while opening the envelope. There were a couple of papers inside, and when she was about to pull it out, the shower noise turned off meant Gastone was done.
Lucia’s heartbeat quickened. She still had a couple of minutes to spare, but she was nervous about getting caught. With a deep breath, she pulled the paper to see the starting sentence and her eyes widened at what she read.
"Turizer Farm... Contract..." Lucia trembled upon reading those words as they connected to Daniel and the Orphanage. She already expected Gastone to have a connection to Daniel, but a contract between them, especially their business, wasn’t on her mind.
Lucia hurriedly placed the envelope back in the drawer immediately before she was caught. She ran toward the sofa and acted as if she had not moved from her spot at all.
When Gastone opened the door, Lucia acted as if she was taking a nap. However, he knew she was faking due to her fastened heartbeat, but he didn’t say a word.
At that time, the strong rain also stopped, and only a drizzle was left.
"Lucia," Gastone called out softly. He wanted to know if she wanted to leave, but he got no response.
Lucia tried her best to stay motionless, even though it ached her muscles. She carefully listened to Gastone’s footsteps, which were getting closer.
"Lucia, do you want to go home or stay here until morning?" Gastone muttered next to Lucia’s ear. His hot breath fanned over her face and tickled her skin.
Lucia frowned but remained unresponsive.
Gastone smirked and shook his head in amusement. He went closer to Lucia’s neck, smelling her lemon scent deep into his lungs before he licked her skin where the mark would be located.
"AH!" Lucia flinched in surprise. She sat up and looked at Gastone in disbelief. "What the hell are you doing!?"
"I know you’re awake, but I can tell you’re a good actress," Gastone chuckled and stood up. "I’ll drive you home."
Lucia glanced at the window, and it wasn’t raining anymore. "Oh... I can go on my own. I don’t need your help," she stated in annoyance. She was already getting comfortable with the place, but Gastone decided to cut it off.
"Don’t be stubborn," Gastone sighed. He reached his hand out for Lucia to take and helped her stand.
"I’m already an adult. I can do it myself!" Lucia shouted in irritation. She was so used to doing things on her own that sometimes she felt disgusted when someone tried to help her when she didn’t need it.
Lucia stood up and ignored Gastone’s hand, which made him slightly pissed.
"A woman should be taken care off. Don’t you want a Princess treatment?" Gastone asked with a raised brow. Most of the women he encountered in his life liked to be treated gently and with care, even though some of it was forced.
"Hah!? Princess treatment? Hahaha! You must be joking?" Lucia crossed her arms as she stepped closer to Gastone. She stared into his eyes to see if he was making fun of her, but all she saw was his seriousness.
"I’m not. I’m always serious with my words," Gastone stated. He felt defeated and tired of their arguments. "Sometimes, you have to let the man lead you, and all you need to do is follow. It’s not that hard?"
Lucia’s mouth hung open in disbelief. She didn’t expect Gastone to say those words to her as if her worth to think was nothing. "Are you saying that I should let the man dictate what I should do with my life?" she asked while pointing at herself.
"No! All I’m saying... sometimes, you have to relax and let the person you trust lead you. Don’t you want your brain to just shut down for a while and be safe at the same time? You don’t need to assert your dominance almost every single minute," Gastone explained. For him, he meant no harm and only wanted the best for Lucia.
Gastone knew Lucia had been fighting alone in her own battles, and he wanted to help. He wanted Lucia to use him for her plans, to lean on him when it got too hard, and not take it all to herself.
However, Lucia understood it differently as her shoulders slumped in disappointment. "After all the hard work I put for all these years... only to be told to depend on a man. Haha... it’s funny," she whispered softly.
The light on Lucia’s eyes slowly vanished as it was replaced with emptiness. She wanted to argue and explain to Gastone her side that she didn’t want to trust anyone since that would be the most dangerous thing since everyone could betray each other freely.
"I didn’t say that. You’re overthinking it," Gastone shook his head in disapproval.
Lucia bit her lips as she walked away and gathered her stuff. "I’ll give you the opportunity to drive me back to the flower shop," she stated coldly.
Gastone grunted. "Okay, I’ll wait for you outside," he said and left his office. He couldn’t believe what Lucia had said, as if he was begging her.
Lucia exhaled loudly when Gastone left. That was when she truly relaxed and felt the chains on her neck vanish. Her eyes went straight to the drawer, and she didn’t waste any second before opening it again.
"I won’t waste this opportunity," Lucia muttered as she aggressively took out the papers. She started reading as fast as she could, especially in the area where the agreement was made. "Oh gosh!"
Lucia’s knees buckled as she fell to the floor after what she had known. She couldn’t believe Gastone would actually form a contract with Daniel regarding human meat production.
"Gastone... you’re a heartless piece of sh^t!" Lucia stated angrily. She had seen Gastone in a new light, and she wouldn’t let him go freely without consequences.
