Chapter 52: Chapter 52- Not So Humble

ZARAH~

Tuesday 19 February 2025, also known as the first day Micheal missed work without an explanation. Every creak of the door made my head swing in its direction hoping it would be him walking in but alas I was always met with the face of one of my coworkers or the interns. Time moved slowly, dragging out the agonizing day as if to punish me for the way I had reacted, I felt guilty for his absence, and putting myself in his shoes I could see how that could’ve really ruined someone’s day.

I didn’t realize how important of a role he played in helping me get through the day but with his sudden absence, it felt like I was drowning in boredom as I waited for time to pass.

I turned my head to the clock, 30 minutes left till I could finally leave this place, I turned my head to his closed office and replayed the scene in my head.

"Fuck me!" I cursed under my breath as I ran my fingers through my wavy hair, I needed to apologize to him, to make up some sort of excuse that wouldn’t only be reasonable but also believable to explain my reaction. It took a while but the long hand of the clock finally landed on twelve. Immediately I rose to my feet tidied up my desk and rushed out saying goodbye to anyone in my path as I hurriedly walked to the elevator. All through the car ride till I got here my mind had been made, I would look him in the eyes and clear it all up but as I stood in front of the door I was reminded of why I had acted the way I did, Nala hadn’t stopped charging up my hormones and boosting every sensation I felt, this suddenly felt like a bad idea but I would push through, I raised my fist and knocked on the door, as I heard the sound of the knock my body immediately went on alert, I turned around to run away before he could come out but I was too late, the doors handle twisted and it opened, he poked his head out and our eyes locked on each other.

"Dina!" He said with surprise as a warm smile curved his lips, immediately I saw him I knew I was in trouble, he wasn’t wearing a shirt and worse of all he was as fit as he looked with tattoos running down from his chest into his pants I could feel my mouth begin to water.

"Hey." I was forced out.

"What are you doing here?" He asked, Suprise still in his voice, I was glad there was space between us cause not only was he shirtless, but he was also dripping, he had just come out of the shower, and I could smell his aftershave and the persistent smell left behind by his bathing soap.

"Erm—" I said, trying to force the words to leave my mouth "I came to apologize for acting the way I did." I answered with my eyes roaming around the hallway looking at every single detail like it was the most Interesting thing I had ever seen. At first, he seemed confused by what I had just said but after a second he remembered and a soft chuckle escaped his lips.

"Nah it’s ok." He said, his words took me back, to when I thought that my words had destroyed him while in reality, the exchange had escaped his mind.

"Really?" I asked making sure I heard right.

"Yeah, it was kind of a wake-up call not to do all-nighters in the office though." He said with a chuckle as he pushed open the door completely and leaned against one side of its frame, as he left the middle of the doorway I was able to catch a glimpse of the inside of his apartment making me realize I had never actually entered into his apartment, I had been here a lot of times but I always stopped at the door, either to hand over files to him or remind him of something when my phone’s battery had died.

"Still I’m sorry," I said, letting out a breath of relief, he chuckled and took his back off the frame as he looked at me.

"Do you wanna come in?" He asked with his hand gesturing into the house, as much as I wanted to say no and avoid any complications I was curious about the kind of space a man like him lived in.

"Sure," I replied with a smile, he stepped back and led the way Into his home with me following closely behind him, as I walked further into the house I looked at the pictures on the wall and they were all beautiful portraits of him and his family. A picture of him and his mom at what looked like his high school graduation, a picture of him and his dad sleeping that made me chuckle cause it was obviously taken by his mom, a picture of all three of them at a park when he was around Elliot’s age and the last one was a picture of him surrounded by people all with smiles on their face and diplomas in their hand’s, One thing was common in all those pictures and that was his smile, the smile I had gotten so accustomed to, the smile that seemed to brighten up my day, the smile that remained persistent even when he wasn’t having the best day. As we got to the main living room I was stunned, it was an arranged mess of books lying on the couches, center tables, and even on the ground.

"Welcome to my not-so-humble abode." He said with a prideful grin.

"Thank you," I said quietly as I slowly walked deeper into the living room and properly inspected it, the furniture arrangements, the color pattern of the paint, and even the paintings hung on the wall all had an artistic feeling to them, all adding to the rooms warm and welcoming vibe, I had barely been here five minutes and I already wanted to through away my inhibitions and relax, I turned my attention back to him and was slightly disaappointed as I saw him putting on a grey shirt, but that feeling of disappointment didn’t last as he drew the shirt down and revealed that it was a tight-fitting body hug that clung to all the right places on his body, Nala growled lustfully and immediately my body was thrown back into high alert.
