Chapter 39: Chapter 39- Fall Back

JULIAN~

From the top of the watch tower, I looked down at my subordinates, their numbers had doubled but still, there was this feeling of unease that had plagued me since the day I saw that tunnel.

"Do the scouts have anything to report?" I asked the uniformed man who stood behind me, he grumbled quietly before he stepped forward and answered.

"Nothing yet ’sir’." annoyance faintly present in his words, I didn’t react as I kept my eyes focused on the forest, He turned around, mumbling incoherently as he walked out of the space and joined some of his colleagues who stood waiting for him.

"He’s starting to overdo this position." I heard him say to his colleagues, No one really knew how good my hearing was which was why I knew how much my subordinates had begun to despise working under me, overhearing them complaining about how controlling I suddenly became after the tunnel, they couldn’t understand why I remained paranoid even though the tunnel had been closed and men guarding the border had been doubled, I couldn’t blame them if I was in their position I would hate me too but that was the thing, the way I wasn’t in their position they weren’t in mine, they couldn’t feel what I had been feeling for days without end.

I let out a calming breath as I took a step back from the railing, I had no idea what it is I’d do about my disgruntled subordinates, if I told them about the feeling I was having they would write it off as me being a paranoid old man but If I remained silent they would soon be unable to rely on my leadership hence stop seeing me as their leader, in the end, I’d leave it up to fate, I turned around and was about to walk away when something flew past my ear with so much intensity that it sounded like a bullet had just shot past my ear, the world slowed down just so I could watch as the object went past my ear and slammed into the man who stood at the doorway bursting through him and sticking to the wall, leaving a massive crater in the wall and a hole in the man.

"Nooooo!!" I shouted as my brain finally processed what had just happened, I ran to the man who had now fallen to the floor, I looked at his open eyes blank of expression, his mouth open and blood falling down one corner of his mouth, he was dead.

"Nooooo!!" I screamed angrily, I bounced to my feet, the atmosphere had completely changed, I could hear the roars of men as they ran to defend the border, Shifters ran from the forest the forest and began biting into men, our numbers were withering down at a rate I couldn’t fathom.

"Sir, we are under attack!" I heard someone shout from behind me, his breathing was heavy as if he just run up all the flights of stairs to me, I turned to face him and just as my eyes landed on his another object flew into him, raising him from his feet and throwing him back down the stairs, my eyes traced the source of the object and I saw them, at the very edge of the border then men stood in a straight line throwing stones the size of hands in random directions, Suddenly the trees erupted in flames as men with lit torches began running out of the forest, when they got close to the structures of the base they would discard the torches causing the fire to catch unto the buildings. Men screamed, the forest burned bright as it had been engulfed in a sea of flames, Wolves tore each other apart, and yet— And yet I remained on top of this tower, angrily, I climbed the railing and looked down, my body seething with rage as I leaped off the tower and began to descend.

"Rargghhhhh!" I shouted at the top of my lungs so my men could hear the voice of their leader.

"Goliath" I called and immediately he answered, midair I shifted into the beast that was my wolf and landed on the ground with a loud boom, dust erupted into the air and Goliath wasted no time as he rushed into action biting down all enemies in his way, his speed was unrivaled even among the shifters present and his gigantic sizes allowed his to bite and body them without them being able to retaliate, his pressure had completely changed the tide of the fight, my men ran forward, roaring as those who could transform into their wolves and those who could run forward with their weapons, Goliath growled as he shot his head up and let out a loud howl and that was the signal.

"Fallback" one of my men shouted and immediately they all began to run back towards the tower, the ones who has just attacked looked confused, wondering why the sudden retreat and unfortunately for them they would get the answer, Two Gatlin gun’s were pushed to the opening at the top of the towers and armor piercing rounds were unleashed on the field beneath, the bullets fired down like rain destroying every single thing in their way and reducing walls to nothing but rubble, all that would be heard was the whistling sound of metal entering through men like piss in snow till eventually the ground was littered with the body of assailants, Goliath stood anxiously, towering over the other wolves that were beside him, spit dripping out the corners of their blood stained mouths as they waited for the machine to stop, Immediately it did they all lounged forward, running together in a coordinated line in the shape of an arrow head, biting down anyone who still stood and finishing off the ones who had been badly injured by the guns shower.

Victory had begun to seem certain until a knife was thrown out from the forest and entered directly into the eye of one of the wolves at the very front of the attacking line, as the knife hit, it went crashing down with a loud painful cry causing Goliath and all the other wolves to stop the attack and run to see what had happened to their comrade, they circled him as he bleeds out, the knife stuck directly in his eyes as he slowly reverted to his human form, swimming in a puddle of his blood, trying his best to stay alive as he drew in slow and tired breaths till he stopped breathing and his eyes went blank and lifeless, My transformation reversed as I walked over and knelt beside him, putting my palm over his eyes I shut them for the last time, Anger began to fill me as I rose to my feet and looked in the direction the knife had come from and right on cue a slender man began walking out of the forest with a horrific smile on his face.
