Chapter 35: Chapter 35- Nana

ZARAH~

I slowed the car down, his head had become clearer but he was still obviously hungover, being his self-appointed designated driver I made sure to steer clear of speed bumps or potholes on the road till we eventually got to the front of his apartment building.

"Home sweet home princess." I teased with a cheeky smile, he looked out the window but didn’t go out.

"What?" I asked seeing the torn look on his face, he turned to me and stared at me for a few seconds before he finally answered.

"I’m—" he paused as if rethinking what he was about to say "I’m sorry for stressing you out." He corrected, I looked at him, curiosity filling me as I thought of the thing he might have actually wanted to say but I decided to let it go.

"Do you have somewhere urgent to be?" He asked, I thought for a few seconds but there wasn’t anything urgent at the moment, Nancy the babysitter had picked up Elliott and would stay with him till I got back so I had a tiny bit of freedom.

"I don’t." I finally answered, he gave me a small smile and then turned his head to the side mirror, he stared into his reflection silently before he let out a heavy sigh.

"Is everything all right?" I asked with worried eyes as I unlocked my seatbelt and put my palm on his shoulder.

"I just— I just wonder what he’d say if he saw me now."

"Who?" I asked, slightly confused by his words, He turned his head to me.

"My Dad."

"I never met him but if he’s anything like you, then I’m sure he’d be proud," I said softly, he scoffed in response.

"He wasn’t like me, he was better than me, at everything, he was better than me."

"I don’t believe that"

"It’s the truth, He wasn’t just a good man, he was a great man. He was the standard of what a man should be." The admiration in his voice was pure, with every word he spoke I could feel how much love he had for his father.

"When? When did he die?" I asked.

"When I was fifteen, Car crash, he was on his way to pick me up from school and got hit by a drunk driver" his voice began breaking, the pain in his eyes vivid as he covered his mouth to stop himself from screaming. He exhaled through his nose and then continued with a saddened voice"The car landed upside down five feet from me and I froze in place, unable to move as I watched them drag him out of the car, I didn’t move, all I could do was watch, I watched as the men surrounded him, I watched as his eyes shut forever when the ambulance arrived.", I looked at him, the sad expression on his face made my heart ache, I wanted to console him but there was nothing I could say that would ease the pain he was feeling, I couldn’t even sympathize with the lose of a parent even though I had lost both of mine.

"What about your mom?"

"Well, after my dad’s death, she just stopped trying, she quit her job, stopped leaving the house, she didn’t even eat anymore, That’s when I saw the impact of the life my father had lived, the amount of people that stepped up to help us out, the number of people that lent us a hand without asking for anything in return made me realize that even if you die, the memories you helped create would never be forgotten, a part of you would always live on within everyone who knew you." He said, his tone had changed, it was still sad but it wasn’t broken, Now it was filled with gladness and gratitude.

"I don’t know what it’s like to have those kinds of parents, but judging from everything you just told me and everything I’ve seen you do, I think you’re as much if not a better man than your father was," I said with a warm smile.

"You really think so?" he asked.

"It’s not about what I think, it’s just the Truth" I confirmed with a smile.

"Thank you," he said as he took in a deep breath and stepped out of the car, "thanks for driving me home." He thanked then turned around and walked into the building while I watched him with a smile on my face.

’I really hope Elliott becomes a man like him’ I thought as he slowly left my line of sight.

The conversation with Micheal got me thinking about my parents, I hadn’t seen my father since he betrayed Howlcreek and abandoned us, while my crackhead mother was back and trying to make amends, I didn’t care if she was high or clean, I didn’t want or need her in my life, she wasn’t a mother to me when I desperately needed one and she wouldn’t be a mother to me now, I wasn’t ready to forgive her after everything she put me through, not yet at least, maybe I’d never be able to forgive her but I honestly didn’t mind that. I reversed the car into my driveway, turned off the engine, and stepped out of it, I played with my keys, humming a song that had been playing in the car as I walked up two steps that led to my balcony, I reached the door and pushed it open.

"I’m home!" I announced and Elliott came out running toward me.

"Mommy!" he shouted as he wrapped his arms around my legs and hugged me.

"My little prince." I said with a smile as I picked him up and twirled him in the air "How are you?"

"Great!" He said happily "Nancy and Nana played games with me and"

"Nana?" I repeated interrupting him before he finished talking, he nodded in response, I felt my blood begin to boil as I looked in the direction where he had come from and saw my mother standing beside Nancy.

"Hey Zah, welcome home," she said as she waved at me.
