Chapter 66: A new chef

"Don’t worry, I really do not care anymore," Charlotte said, picking up his hand and placing it on her chest. "See, it’s not beating fast. I promise I am not feeling anything for you again."

Dave was left speechless, lost in her mesmerizing smile. She was still as vibrant as ever. Even when he had mistreated her, she never stopped smiling at him. She had been a fool to love someone like him.

After the painful break-up with Evelyn, the warrior leader, he had vowed not to love again, not realizing that he was hurting himself by doing so.

Charlotte stood by him when he was head over heels in love with Evelyn and didn’t hold any grudges for loving someone else while neglecting her feelings.

She comforted him when he was heartbroken, and she was there for him when he was completely broken, yet he had never considered her feelings. She watched him go from one woman to another, and still, her love for him never waned.

Should he have accepted her feelings back then instead of pushing her away? Why was he only realizing her value now that she was taken?

"What’s wrong?" Charlotte asked, tapping him back to reality.

"I am fine," he replied, pulling his hand away from her chest.

"What about Ronald?" he changed the topic, trying to distract himself from his thoughts.

"His brother got involved in a fatal accident, so he had to travel back to his country," she answered, showing concern for her sweet boyfriend.

"I am sorry," Dave said, not entirely sure why he said it, but he felt it was the right thing to do.

"Nah, his life is no longer in danger, but our wedding was postponed so he could take care of his brother," Charlotte said, sounding happy despite the circumstances.

It was the same look she used to give him when she was still obsessed with him. He hated that she felt that way because of Ronald, but it was too late.

"Is he good to you?" Dave asked, genuinely concerned.

"I have always been the one chasing, but Ronald chased me, so he is good to me the way I want a man to be," she answered, rubbing her body as a sudden cold breeze swept past them.

Removing his coat, Dave carefully draped it over her, surprising her. Even when she was ill, Dave hadn’t cared enough to get her a doctor. Why the sudden care?

"You don’t have to do this because of Sarah. I’d prefer if you talked to me the way you always did. I am used to it," she said, guessing the only reason she could think of. He was probably treating her well because she was a close friend to his brother’s fiancée.

"It’s not because of that," he said, but Charlotte laughed.

"You have always been good at lying, but this doesn’t sound convincing. Better luck next time," she said, laughing heartily and wrapping his coat securely around her.

Dave didn’t know how to explain himself without making it seem like he regretted all he had done to her, so he stayed silent and let her believe what she wanted. It was better if she knew nothing.

"So, what have you been up to?" Charlotte asked.

"Helping my brother. I plan on opening a bar soon," he revealed his future plans.

"That’s a nice idea. I have always loved being a bar attendant. If you need help, I can volunteer," she suggested, finding solace in his business idea. She had wanted to open a bar, but her brothers wouldn’t let her because they believed she wasn’t good at business.

"What’s stopping you?" Dave asked.

"My brothers, and I am getting married soon. It’s kind of too late for that," she sighed.

"You could tell Ronald. I am sure he wouldn’t mind opening one for you. Or is he the jealous type?" Dave teased, winking at her.

She playfully hit his arm and replied, "I wish! Ronald is so overprotective of me, he wouldn’t let me lift a needle when he’s around. I am so lucky to have him." Her eyes were filled with love as she spoke about him. If Ronald was the reason behind her glowing smile, then Dave didn’t mind seeing Charlotte marry someone like him.

Charlotte’s face had been a rollercoaster of emotions when Dave had pushed her away in the past, but now it radiated joy.

"You seem happy with him," Dave observed.

"Of course, I am. But I am worried about losing him. His family is still reluctant about accepting me as his wife, they think I am too young for him," she confided, earning Dave’s concern.

"Do you really love him?" He asked, catching her off guard. Charlotte turned to look at Dave, feeling nervous under his gaze.

"I... I do," she stammered, feeling a mix of emotions as she faced her first love. Yes, she was over Dave, but that didn’t mean she hated him. He would always hold a place in her heart. Ronald was the one she loved now, and that was how it would be forever.

"Charlotte, I know I am not in a position to talk about leaving a man who doesn’t deserve you, but you don’t have to force yourself to find love. You are beautiful and will find a better man if things don’t work out with Ronald," Dave said, surprised that he was giving advice, but Charlotte had broken his resolve. She had affected him deeply.

"Then will you marry me instead?" Charlotte asked, leaning forward toward his face.

"Just kidding," she quickly added, laughing at his helpless expression. Dave smiled, enjoying her playful teasing.

"Oh my," startled by a bird, Charlotte lost her balance and started falling backward, but Dave swiftly caught her in his arms.

"Are you okay?" Dave asked, gently brushing strands of hair away from her face.

Looking up at him, Charlotte found herself lost in those eyes she had always wanted to see back then. Their gazes locked, and neither of them moved to avert their eyes. It was as if they couldn’t get enough of each other.

"You are beautiful," Dave blurted out, moving closer as if to kiss her lips.

Charlotte knew she should stop him, but she also wanted to know what it felt like to have his lips on hers.
