Yu Li had just opened her eyes when an impatient voice sounded in her ears.
"You're the new intern?"
Before her stood a slightly plump woman in a white coat and nurse's cap, looking to be in her thirties or forties. Her sallow complexion, thick black-framed glasses, and dark under-eye circles suggested poor rest, and her expression was far from friendly. She appeared to be the head nurse of this psychiatric hospital.
Yu Li lowered her eyes, adopting a timid demeanor, and responded with a soft "Mm-hmm."
The head nurse frowned deeply at her response. She was about to say something when a hurried voice interrupted from nearby.
"Sister Yu, the patient on the third floor is having another episode! We can't restrain him!"
Yu Yu's expression hardened upon hearing this. "I'll go check. Dai Liu, brief the new intern on the rules."
"Got it."
Once the head nurse left, the young nurse glanced at the new intern, thinking to herself how pretty she was. With a reassuring smile, she said, "Don't be scared. Sister Yu has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. We've had too many interns recently, and she's been pulling all-nighters to train them—it's made her a bit irritable."
Yu Li smiled. "It's fine."
Noticing Yu Li was already in uniform, the nurse handed her a new notebook. "Come with me for a tour. I'll show you around and explain the rules."
"Okay."
The nurse led Yu Li through the wards to familiarize her with the environment.
"Our patients are categorized by floor. The first floor is the common activity area for patients with milder symptoms. The second floor houses medications and examination rooms. The third floor also has patients, but their conditions are less stable, so they're usually confined."
She pressed the elevator button, pausing when she saw Yu Li listening attentively, then pointed to the fourth and fifth floors.
"But remember, you must never go to the fourth or fifth floors—especially the fifth."
Yu Li glanced upward. "What's so special about those floors?"
"The fourth-floor patients are highly dangerous. You won't be assigned there—too much could go wrong." Lowering her voice, she added, "And the fifth floor is the director's office. No one's allowed up there. Got it?"
Yu Li nodded thoughtfully. "Got it."
Dai Liu was about to continue when the elevator dinged open, revealing a masked man studying a medical chart. His slightly disheveled bangs, crisp white coat, and impeccable posture exuded refinement. The glimpse of his wristbone and the understated luxury watch peeking from his sleeve completed the picture of quiet elegance.
Hearing the sound, the man slowly looked up. His eyes resembled secluded mountain springs—clear yet profound, edged with detached coolness—and immediately locked with Yu Li's gaze.
Recognition flashed across his usually impassive features, replaced by confusion.
Yu Li arched a subtle brow, equally surprised.
An odd silence stretched between them.
Unaware of the tension, Dai Liu cheerfully greeted, "Director Bo, heading up?"
The voice seemed to snap Bo Jingmo back to reality. He averted his gaze like a guilty thief, offering only a noncommittal "Mm," before stepping into the elevator and pressing the button for the fifth floor.
Dai Liu tugged Yu Li's hand. "Alright, we'll get going then."
Yu Li said nothing, allowing herself to be led out.
As the doors closed, Bo Jingmo's gaze remained fixed on Yu Li's retreating figure—scrutinizing, searching.
Then the girl suddenly turned back.
Through the narrowing gap, their eyes met again.
Bo Jingmo instinctively tried to look away, but then—
Yu Li's eyes curved into crescents as she softly said, "Goodbye, Director Bo."
Bo Jingmo stiffened, lips parting to respond: "Good—"
The doors shut with a decisive click.
Staring at the closed elevator, he stood motionless, an indescribable emotion—regret? loss?—spreading through him before he finally pressed his lips together and clenched his fists.
Why did that girl feel so familiar?
Outside the elevator, Dai Liu's eyes lit up at Yu Li's unexpected greeting. With a knowing smirk, she teased, "So? Isn't our director dreamy?"
Yu Li leisurely withdrew her gaze, amused. "How should I know? I never saw his face."
"Who needs to? Those eyes alone slay legions of admirers." Dai Liu sighed dramatically. "And he became director so young—you wouldn't believe how many people pine after him."
"Is that so?" Yu Li blinked. "Do you like him too?"
Dai Liu vehemently shook her head. "Oh no no no. For someone like him—an untouchable ice prince—I'm content to admire from afar. He's famously cold and unapproachable."
Yu Li couldn't help laughing.
"An ice prince, huh..."
But she couldn't deny: there was something thrilling about defiling such untouchable purity, watching that always-composed demeanor shatter, those cool eyes clouding with desperate heat.
She'd experienced it firsthand.
Dai Liu seemed eager to continue gossiping when a familiar icy voice cut in:
"Dai Liu, since you're so chatty, I'd love to hear your evaluation of me."
Dai Liu froze mid-step, slowly turning to find Yu Yu standing behind them, bloodshot eyes glaring, hands on hips.
Dai Liu: "..."
I'm so dead.
