"It might just be a coincidence, isn’t Chloe getting in line to buy fried chicken?"
Ella smiled and pointed at the fried chicken sign, speaking gently to Filbert Fisher.
Filbert frowned, but sat back down anyway.
"You’re just too nice to her. Her family has done such cruel things to you now. If it were anyone else, they probably wouldn’t even give her the chance to stand here."
Ella still smiled, but the smile now had a hint of bitterness.
"Chloe didn’t do anything in this matter. It has nothing to do with her."
"It’s because you’re too kind-hearted that her family treats you like that."
Filbert’s frown deepened, as if Chloe had done something to Ella.
Ella couldn’t help but sigh.
Hearing Ella sigh, Filbert felt even more disgusted with Chloe.
Ella had done nothing wrong yet suffered persecution from Adam Stephens and others, and even Carl Stephens was severely injured.
No one could save Carl Stephens, so the whole family now depended on Ella.
Filbert extended his hand to hold Ella’s tightly, promising, "As long as I’m here, I won’t let the other members of the Stephens family bully you."
When her hand was held, Ella tensed slightly, and her smile seemed a bit strained.
"Thank you."
"You’re my fiancée, it’s my duty to help you."
Filbert glanced at Chloe at the back of the line and frowned again.
Ella hurried to change the subject, telling him the purpose of her visit this time.
Upon hearing this, Filbert looked at Ella with some difficulty, saying, "After my father was injured last time, many people in the Fisher family began to speculate whether he could recover. So, many are making their moves in secret. With my father’s current injury, he needs to deal with the family’s tricky affairs. So, I’m afraid he won’t be able to help you with the Stephens family matter right away, Ella. Believe me, I want to help you, but all our people have been sent out to deal with things."
So he couldn’t help.
Ella understood, and wasn’t very happy about it.
Even so, she still had to pretend to be understanding.
"I know, you don’t have to explain to me."
"Thank you for understanding," Filbert gripped her hand tighter, "Let’s eat something first, and then I’ll take you back."
Ella subtly pulled her hand back and forced a smile, "My family is still waiting for me."
Filbert nodded and got up to escort her.
*
Chloe bought some fried chicken and was about to leave.
But Ella suddenly walked up and blocked her way.
With a worried look on her face, Ella said to Chloe, "Chloe, are you out alone again? You should be in school at this time."
Chloe glanced at her.
Filbert frowned even more, standing by Ella’s side with an unhappy expression, "Your sister is talking to you."
Chloe opened the paper bag, took a bite of fried chicken, looked at Filbert as if he was a nutcase, then circled around to leave.
"Wait."
Filbert was uncomfortable with Chloe’s cold gaze.
Seeing her trying to leave, he called out to stop her.
Chloe didn’t show any intention of stopping, which annoyed him even more.
He quickly stepped in front of her, his expression icy, "Are you following us? I’ve told you before, I will never like you. Now Ella and I are the real engaged couple, so don’t do such boring things in the future."
Chloe took another bite of her fried chicken.
She ignored his anger and embarrassment.
She just thought he was really sick.
"Never mind, Chloe probably didn’t follow us on purpose," Ella stepped forward in time to play the role of a good, kind-hearted girl.
"Ella, it’s just because you’re too lenient with her that they’ve treated you like this," Filbert’s anger towards Chloe only grew.
"Get lost."
"What?" Hearing the cold "get lost," Filbert thought he had misheard.
"Take your trash and get lost."
Chloe glanced at Ella.
Ella’s face changed slightly.
Filbert’s anger grew even more.
He looked at Chloe in disbelief, "What did you say? Are you saying I’m trash?"
No matter how calm Filbert was, at this moment, he couldn’t help but laugh with anger at Chloe’s words.
Chloe glanced at him again.
It was as if she was saying, "So you’re aware of your own shortcomings."
Filbert laughed a few times, infuriated.
"Chloe, don’t think that..."
Chloe had already taken her fried chicken and walked away.
Filbert wanted to chase after her, but Ella held him back and shook her head at him, "Let’s go back. Chloe has always been a strange girl; it’s common for her to ignore people."
"You’re her sister, and look at the way she talks to you!"
It seemed Filbert had forgotten that he had nothing to do with Chloe.
If it were anyone else, they would have slapped him on the spot.
Chloe saw the dark aura around Filbert getting darker and knew he was about to face a disaster, so she didn’t bother quarreling with a "dead man."
As she left, Ella couldn’t help looking at Chloe in the distance.
She saw a car pull up beside Chloe, and a man in camouflage got out, instantly attracting attention.
And Chloe casually got into the car.
It was him!
Seeing the dazzling man, Ella’s eyes widened in surprise.
Len Hawthorne!
"Ella? What’s wrong?"
Filbert looked over and also saw him.
His face instantly turned black.
He clenched the car handle and said in a low voice, "She’s just giving up on herself, mixing with that old man. She thinks she’s not embarrassing enough."
Chloe and Len only had a seven-year age difference.
"Chloe is quite good-looking too. She and he make a good match."
"I just think she has a good appearance, but no brain. It’s obvious what he’s after. Only she would be so stupid to get close to him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were making shady deals in secret."
Filbert’s disgust for Chloe was written all over his face.
Ella couldn’t help but glance at Filbert.
She used to think he was a composed and thoughtful man, but now she suddenly saw him as somewhat childish.
That’s right.
From the beginning, she never intended to be with him.
*
"Little Chloe, don’t eat too much greasy food, be careful of indigestion."
Len, who was driving, glanced at Chloe, who was still eating her fried chicken.
Chloe wiped her mouth with a tissue, "I have medicine."
Len Hawthorne laughed and took a bottle of water from the car for her, "You still can’t eat too much."
Chloe took a sip of water and asked, "How’s the Fisher family situation?"
"Are you very concerned about the Fisher family?"
"I just want to see their outcome."
"Someone is already collecting evidence. After all, it’s a big move; we can’t take action without any grounds."
Chloe responded with a hum.
Len suddenly looked her way, his eyes full of meaning.
"Little Chloe, tell your big brother honestly, did you do something to Granny Brooks from Dark City?"
"What Granny Brooks?"
"You really don’t know?" Len looked at her pretending to be oblivious with amusement.
Chloe feigned a blank expression with a straight face.
She didn’t say anything.
Len said, "Give the Fisher family a chance to relax for now. We still need to find an opportunity to take action."
Chloe listened and took another bite of her fried chicken.
After a while, she spoke up, "So you’re just going to let the Hawthorne family off the hook?"
Len’s dark eyes narrowed, "No."
