After Rebirth, Minor Character Only Wants to Level Up -
Chapter 29 - 028: Omen
Chapter 29: 028: Omen
On New Year’s Eve, those with relatives went back to their own dormitories with family, and employees also went to rest. With just one bed for Ye He Ping, it obviously wasn’t enough to sleep, so Ye He Ping squeezed in with the employees, where four people had to share his single bed.
In previous years, when celebrating New Year at the company, Ye He Ping also stayed with others. Therefore, Bai Xue and her daughter could still manage to stay there. Now, with her mother-in-law and eldest daughter also arriving, the problem that other families usually worried about was now on her own shoulders this time.
"Grandma, you’re older, you take the bed. I’ll nap leaning against the chair, and it’ll be morning soon." Ye Ling knew she shouldn’t compete with Ye Qian right now. No matter what, she couldn’t bear to let her grandma suffer.
Ye Ling didn’t consider herself generous, but she knew that in the end, if disputes arose, her mother would ultimately let Ye Qian end up on the bed. That would only worry her grandmother more, and Ye Ling didn’t want that. Thus, she chose to yield to Ye Qian this time.
Bai Xue was fretting about how to let her younger daughter sleep on the bed too. Seeing her eldest daughter speak up, she felt relieved and smiled, "Mom, it’s already late, please go to sleep."
Old Mrs. Ye knew her daughter-in-law would actually let the younger granddaughter sleep, but personally lying on the bed while her eldest granddaughter stayed up all night made her uncomfortable. "I’m older, and I don’t really have to sleep. How about this: let Ye Qian sleep inside, and Lingzi, come over and share the edge of the bed with me, just make do for the night."
Bai Xue felt troubled, "Mom, it’s already a single bed. It’s difficult for two people to fit. How about this: I’ll tidy up the table here, and let Lingzi lie on it for the night. I remember He Ping has another blanket here."
Upon hearing this compromise, Old Mrs. Ye looked toward Ye Qian, seeing that her younger granddaughter hadn’t said a word all along. She felt a bit uneasy. Bai Xue also noticed something strange about her younger daughter today. Letting her mother-in-law lie inside, while Ye Ling tidied up the table, Bai Xue finally had the chance to inquire in detail.
"Qianqian, what’s wrong? Not feeling well?"
"My nose bled again tonight, and I’m feeling a bit dizzy." Coupled with staying up late, Ye Qian was truly not feeling well.
Hearing this, Bai Xue frowned, "You’ve been having nosebleeds frequently these past few months. After the New Year, I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up."
Consistent nosebleeds are not a good sign.
Ye Qian felt heavy-headed and didn’t say much. She went straight to bed and lay down.
Bai Xue was worried that her mother-in-law would criticize her younger daughter, so she helped explain, "Qianqian has been having nosebleeds from time to time. I originally thought it might pass on its own, saving some money. This kid is always worried about the family."
"Since it’s not good, better find time to have it checked. Money can be earned again, but if illness is delayed too long, it might cost more later." Hearing this, Old Mrs. Ye felt relieved.
After helping her mother-in-law lie down, Bai Xue fetched a blanket from under the bed. Ye Ling spread half, covered with the other half, and curled up on the table, but at least she managed to lie down.
It was pitiful for Bai Xue though. She hadn’t endured such hardship in years. Tightening her wool coat around herself while leaning on a chair wasn’t easy for someone not young anymore. Having been up so late, she managed to fall asleep sitting, but it felt like she’d just closed her eyes when dawn broke.
Ye Ling also slept soundly. Though the morning broadcast woke her up sleepy, she at least caught up on some sleep. Ye He Ping had long brought a basin of warm water for the family to wash up. Bai Xue signaled to her younger daughter.
Ye Qian glanced at her grandmother before speaking, "Grandma, you wash first."
Old Mrs. Ye waved her hand, "Just wring me out a towel to wipe with, then you all wash."
Ye Ling had already received the towel, wringing it in warm water. Bai Xue smiled, "Lingzi has stayed by mom’s side for so long, she already knows mom’s habits."
Ye Ling wrung it out and intercepted her grandmother’s response, "Grandma, just wipe yourself."
She couldn’t bear to see her mother’s constant fretting over such matters.
With kindness, Old Mrs. Ye took the towel, pulling her granddaughter to sit by her side. "You’ve always had this peculiar habit since young, refusing to use wash water others have used. This is not home but outside. Just make do for now; you wipe first, and I’ll wipe after you’re done."
Ye Ling smiled, knowing her grandmother had guessed her thoughts, said nothing more, wiped her face, and then handed it to her grandmother. At the side, Bai Xue’s facial expression changed before gradually calming down, while Ye He Ping frowned slightly, aware of his eldest daughter’s peculiar habit.
"Mom, don’t indulge her bad habits. We’re not from a wealthy family, where are these habits even coming from?" Ye He Ping didn’t overthink; he simply voiced whatever came to mind.
Old Mrs. Ye snorted, "How is this indulging? The child is clean and doesn’t want to use wash water another has used. Look at Ye Qian, didn’t she also wash first before you all washed? Why doesn’t she wash after seeing you all finish washing? He Ping, they are both your daughters, why only focus on Lingzi?"
Seeing her son reminded Old Mrs. Ye of not letting her granddaughter go to school.
Seeing her son only watching over her eldest granddaughter, she directly rebuked him without holding back.
Ye He Ping’s face stiffened. Even Ye Qian, who had just washed her face, blushed upon hearing those words. After a moment of awkwardness, Bai Xue joined in with a laugh, "Indeed, mom, you’re right. You should talk to He Ping about this."
At this moment, Bai Xue fully embodied the role of a caring mother.
Ye Qian felt embarrassed, keeping her head lowered and daring not to speak. Ye Ling didn’t even bother defending her parents, completely ignoring her mother’s signals, pretending to understand nothing.
Though Bai Xue was secretly upset, she didn’t have high hopes, since she knew her eldest daughter wouldn’t change.
Ye He Ping also knew his mother was angry, but after catching a hint from his wife, he quickly admitted fault, "Mom, I was wrong. It’s New Year’s; let’s tidy up and go out for a meal first. After eating, you can head straight back to the yard. I’ll go back with you."
Being the first day of the New Year and at the company, Old Mrs. Ye no longer gave her son a hard time.
Bai Xue let her younger daughter accompany her mother-in-law and eldest daughter to the cafeteria. Only then did she explain to her husband, "Mom knows about not letting Lingzi go to school, and she’s noted it down in her heart."
Ye He Ping had a serious expression, "Wasn’t it agreed to discuss after Lingzi’s entrance exam? Why did you spill it out first? Talking about this during New Year’s isn’t nice; no wonder mom’s upset. Lingzi was raised by mom, always a good student. You can’t expect mom to be happy about not letting her study."
Bai Xue dared not to say it was her eldest daughter who agitated her. On the surface, she simply admitted fault, "I accidentally let it slip. I was just worried about how to discuss this with you. Judging by mom’s look, I suspect she’ll find you today at home, so think carefully about how to talk to her and avoid making her too upset. After all, she’s getting old."
"Don’t worry, I’ve got a handle on it." Knowing his wife cared for his mother, Ye He Ping forgot the earlier matter. The couple exited the dorm heading to the cafeteria.
