Chapter 28: 027: Misunderstanding
After dinner, everyone moved outside, waiting for the arrival of the new year. The company had also prepared fireworks to celebrate. Zhao Guodong and the boys had already run out; there was no way they would miss the fireworks when they were set off.
They were all children of the company leaders, running around the company wildly without anyone stopping them. In past years, this was what Zhao Guodong looked forward to the most, but today when he saw Wang Ping squeezing to the front, he just stood there motionless.
Zhang Linong gave him a push, "Come on."
"I have something to take care of, I’ll be back in a bit," Zhao Guodong said and squeezed through the crowd.
Zhang Linong called out twice, but the person was already out of sight, so he had to squeeze through the crowd to follow. He saw Zhao Guodong heading towards the girls’ side, but in the factory area, there were people everywhere, so his voice was drowned out. Zhang Ningli did not call out, just chased after Zhao Guodong. However, he wasn’t in a hurry, walking leisurely with his hands in his pockets like he was on a stroll, carrying an air of laziness.
Zhang Ningli, although only in the third year of middle school, exuded a sense of laziness in his speech, actions, and demeanor. It seemed as if even if the sky were to fall, his face would never show urgency, always remaining peaceful and calm, almost unlike the silence expected at his age.
Zhao Guodong was heading towards Ye Ling. All the way to the company today, Ye Ling had already owed him three favors, but just after dinner, he hadn’t even risen from his seat when she already vanished. Having not received a single word from Ye Ling, Zhao Guodong felt more and more uncomfortable with each thought. He gritted his teeth and chased after, determined to confront that country bumpkin properly.
When he finally approached, Zhao Guodong found that it was Ye Qian. Initially realising it was the wrong person, he wanted to turn around and leave. But then he recalled hearing Song Mei talking about that country bumpkin earlier, so he stopped and turned back.
His sudden appearance startled Ye Qian and Song Mei, leaving them a bit baffled. Just as they were about to breathe with relief seeing him turn away, he stopped again, leaving the half-exhaled breath trapped in their chests.
"Zhao Guodong, what do you want? Chasing over to bully people? I’m telling you, don’t think I’m really afraid of you; we can make this a big deal and let your dad judge." Song Mei thought Zhao Guodong came to seek revenge.
Zhao Guodong was wearing a green cotton jacket underneath and a blue coat over it, which had lost many buttons, showing most of the inner jacket. He was tall, moving around like a gust of wind, truly looking like a reckless young guy.
Hearing Song Mei’s words, Zhao Guodong’s square face was taut like a millstone, and his originally small phoenix eyes seemed filled with fierceness under the night sky, although it wasn’t clear what kind of expression they held.
"Song Mei, I always do things above board. I’m telling you, we have plenty of time to settle our scores. Were you just talking about that country bumpkin? Don’t think I didn’t hear you gossiping behind people’s backs." Zhao Guodong’s rogue side emerged again as he pointed at Ye Qian, "Aren’t you the country bumpkin’s sister? How come you’re still talking bad about your sister with outsiders?"
Ye Qian’s face flushed red, stealing a glance at Song Mei, then lowering her head without a word.
"Zhao Guodong, don’t accuse people without evidence. We were talking about that country bumpkin, not saying bad things about her. If you think we were, then tell us what bad things we said?" Song Mei didn’t care much.
"Talking about people behind their back, if it’s not bad things, could it be good things?" Zhao Guodong said smugly, "I’ll just tell that country bumpkin, see what you do then."
"Go ahead, go ahead." Who would fear that country bumpkin, Song Mei couldn’t be threatened.
Ye Qian saw the two arguing again and quickly tried to calm things down, "Today is New Year’s, let’s talk things over nicely and stop quarreling. Zhao Guodong, don’t misunderstand. Song Mei was just saying whether to take my sister to the library when it opens since she might have gone back to the countryside by then."
Zhao Guodong looked skeptical but remembered something else, "Ye Qian, why does your family just leave the country bumpkin back in the countryside?"
Ye Qian’s expression went stiff again.
Song Mei stepped in front of Ye Qian, "Zhao Guodong, stop bullying Ye Qian. Besides, it’s their family matter, none of your business."
"Move aside for me." Zhao Guodong shoved Song Mei away, shouting, "You always have to intervene. Say one more word, and I’ll beat you up."
To emphasize his point, Zhao Guodong even shook his fist at Song Mei.
In the dark, Song Mei’s face went pale, hardly daring to speak further.
Ye Qian wasn’t afraid. She spoke softly and quietly, "My sister grew up with my grandmother all along. Besides, changing schools now requires some adaptation time, and we’re worried it might affect her middle school exams, so that’s why we didn’t bring her back."
"Why not a few years ago? Your family is really strange." Zhao Guodong sneered, turned, and walked away.
Once he had walked far away, Song Mei finally bit her lip and came to Ye Qian’s side, "That pest."
Ye Qian smiled a little, but before she could speak, her nose suddenly started bleeding. Song Mei, noticing this, hurriedly reached into her pocket and realized she didn’t bring a handkerchief. Helping Ye Qian tilt her head back, she said, "I didn’t bring a handkerchief, let’s go to where there are more people."
"What happened?" A deep voice came.
The person arrived, and Song Mei felt this presence brought a chilly breeze. She looked up to see a man and said quickly, "Uncle, do you have a handkerchief?"
Shen Bin took a handkerchief out of his pocket and handed it over, glancing at the two, "This place is quite secluded; better go to where there are more people."
Earlier, he saw the son of Director Zhao from the logistics department walking out with an unhappy face. Now seeing this little girl’s nosebleed, he could guess a bit of what happened.
"Uncle, thank you, I’ll wash it and return it to you when it’s clean." With the handkerchief pressed, her nose bleeding finally stopped.
Shen Bin recognized her as the one who danced and nonchalantly said, "No need."
He turned on his heels and walked away in long strides. fr eewe(b)nove.l.co\m
Song Mei didn’t take a grown man seriously, pulling Ye Qian towards the crowd, "Let’s go."
Ye Qian, however, glanced a few more times in the direction Shen Bin left, intending to remember him so she could return the handkerchief later. Meanwhile, Zhao Guodong remained completely oblivious that he had been misunderstood by Shen Bin.
