Chapter 282: YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF
Stephan’s hands moved swiftly as he packed his belongings, he was getting discharged today and he had been told to rest very well at home.
He kept looking toward the door like he was expecting someone to come. When his mum gave this she also looked toward the door before she broke the silence.
"Do you have a guest?" she asked, her brow furrowed in curiosity. Stephan glanced at her and shook his head, his gaze now fixed on his luggage.
His mother’s eyes narrowed, "Is it Julian?" she asked, trying to get words from him.
"Does he even care about you anymore?" The words stung, and Stephan’s eyes flashed with defensiveness as he grasped his mother’s shoulder.
"It wasn’t Julian’s fault, Mum," he explained, his voice firm. "I was the one who caused the fight. You have to understand that." His mother’s expression softened.
"Yeah, and it’s all because of the bitch which your stupid heart had fallen for." Stephan took a deep breath.
Just then, the door swung open, and Julian strode in, his eyes scanning the room before coming to rest on Stephan.
"Good day," he greeted and Miles also came in along with him, Stephan’s mum stared at them and went back to Stephan.
"Mum, can you please excuse us?" She nodded her head, patted his shoulder, and then walked out not without glaring at Julian.
"I am pleased to hear that you have admitted to his mistakes," Julian said, his voice neutral, though a hint of tension simmered beneath the surface.
Stephan’s eyes flicked to Julian, then to Miles, who stood beside him, his eyes red-rimmed and his face pale. The dark circles under Miles’ eyes told a story of their own, and Stephan’s heart went out to his friend. He knew that the drama between Tonia and Adams had taken a toll on Miles.
"I am more surprised you would honor the visit of someone who hurt my wife," Stephan replied.
"I came because of friendship, don’t cross your limit." Julian bellowed, clenching his fist.
Miles stepped forward, "Hey, don’t be too hard on him, Julian. We are not here for this." He spoke up and Stephan smiled wryly, feeling a sense of relief wash over him.
"I have something to tell you," Stephan began, his voice hesitant.
"I have been diagnosed with a chronic disease." Julian’s eyes snapped to Stephan’s, his expression unreadable, while Miles’ eyes widened in surprise.
The room fell silent, the only sound was the soft hum of the air conditioner. Finally, Miles broke the silence, "Well how are things going now?"
Stephan exhaled sharply, "Well, guess it’s my karma for hurting good people and destroying my friendship."
Julian’s eyes rolled heavenward, and Miles chuckled.
Stephan’s eyes locked onto Julian’s, his heart heavy with regret. He knew he had to apologize, to make amends for his mistakes. With a deep breath, he dropped to his knees, his eyes fixed on Julian’s.
"Julian, I am so sorry," Stephan began, his voice cracking.
"I was wrong to hurt your wife, to put her through that trauma. I let my emotions cloud my judgment, and I am truly sorry." Julian’s expression remained unreadable, his hands still tucked into his pockets.
The silence stretched out, "I know it’s going to be hard for you. But I hope you now know that I have changed."
"The apology shouldn’t be directed at me, Stephan. It should be directed to my wife, whom you hurt." Stephan’s eyes dropped, shame washing over him.
Julian’s words cut deep, and Stephan knew he had to make things right. "I will apologize to her, Julian. I promise. And I will face whatever punishment comes my way." Julian’s eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing.
"It’s a promise Julian, I would do it... I miss my friends so much and I am willing to change."
Julian snickered as his hand came down on Stephan’s shoulder, his touch gentle as he smiled sincerely at him.
"It’s a good decision, Stephan," Julian proclaimed happy that his friend was gaining back himself.
"Facing the truth and making amends is never easy, but it’s the right thing to do."
"Yes, I am willing to take the right way even though it’s going to cost me my career and freedom." Julian and Miles exchanged glances.
"What are you talking about?" they both asked at once.
"Well, I have a lot with Mattie, and it’s a crime which can’t go unpunished so..." his words trailed.
Meanwhile, Mattie, who had been lurking by the door, shifted uncomfortably, her eyes narrowing as she watched the exchange between Julian and Stephan.
"That bastard! He is going to sell me this way," she mumbled, biting her finger. She had come down here to converse with him regarding this but, guess he has other reasons.
He was willing to reveal the truth, to expose her for what she had done.
A cold smile spread across Mattie’s face as she backed away from the door.
She couldn’t let Stephan reveal the truth, not now, not ever. She would do whatever it took to silence him, to keep her secrets safe.
"I will destroy you before you get the chance to do so," Mattie hissed as she left without anyone noticing her.
Mattie’s fingers flew across the keypad as she dialed a number, her eyes fixed intently on the phone. She lifted it to her ear, her breathing steady as she waited for the person on the other end to answer.
"Hello?" a deep, gravelly voice responded, sending a shiver down Mattie’s spine.
"Do you remember the promise you made to me?" Mattie asked, making her voice steady.
"Of course, I never forget," the man replied.
Mattie’s smile grew wider, her eyes glinting with a sinister light. "I need you now," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The man’s response was immediate. "Consider it done."
Mattie hung up the phone, her mask still firmly in place. She turned to face the hospital building.
"You brought this on yourself, Stephan," Mattie muttered to herself with a devilish smile as she walked off.
