Chapter 274: MISS ME?
Mattie’s phone slipped from her grasp, clattering to the floor as she stumbled backward, her eyes fixed on the screen in horror.
The video playing on the phone was like a punch to the gut, a stark reminder of the heinous crime she had committed.
The footage of her killing Astrid’s mother played on a loop, the images seared into her brain like a branding iron.
Mattie’s face writhed in pain as she began to pace around the room, her feet carrying her on a frantic path.
Her hands were clenched into fists, her fingers digging deep into her palms as she fought to contain her emotions.
Her hair, once neatly styled, now hung in tangled disarray around her face, framing her features like a wild halo.
A strangled cry escaped her lips as she spun around the room, her eyes radiating with frustration.
"No, it can’t be!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls. "This can’t be happening!"
The weight of her actions crushed her, the guilt and shame threatening to consume her. She stumbled, her legs buckling beneath her, and collapsed onto the bed, her body wracked with sobs.
As she lay there, she recalled Stephan’s words, his warning that Astrid knew the truth and would take action. And now, with this video, Mattie was faced with the very real possibility of being exposed, of being brought to justice for her crimes.
The thought sent a chill down her spine, and she sat up, her eyes scanning the room with a growing sense of unease. Was Stephan behind the video? Had he been threatening her all along?
She shook her head, he can’t be? But another thought flashed through her mind. She hadn’t been threatened all these while he had been unconscious.
"Stephan, so you are the one? I promise I will take care of you. Since you wouldn’t mind I would do as I please with you now. You brought it up to yourself." she let it all out at once.
Just then Zach walked into the room, making her sit right swallowing her tears so he wouldn’t butt in much.
Zach’s eyes scanned her room space with disgust. The room was in disarray, with furniture overturned and clothes scattered everywhere.
Mattie’s eyes met Zach’s, and for a moment, they just stared at each other, until she sprang up her feet.
She strode over to her father, who was standing in the doorway, a look of disappointment etched on his face.
"Why are you still acting like this?" he asked, his voice laced with frustration.
Mattie’s smile was bitter, her eyes held anger. "Am I embarrassing you now, Father?" she implored in tears. "Do you regret taking me in, raising me as your own?"
Zach’s face fell, his eyes filled with a deep sadness. "Mattie, I...I don’t know what to say," he stammered. "I have always loved you, always treated you like my own daughter."
Mattie’s laughter was cold, mirthless. "Easy to say now, Father," she sneered. "But where were you when I needed you? When I was struggling with my demons?"
Her father took a step forward, his eyes pleading. "Mattie, please...I’m trying to make things right."
But Mattie was unforgiving, her heart hardened against him. "You should have thought of that before," she spat, her voice dripping with malice. "Now, it’s too late."
"Too late?" he scoffed and walked inside, "I took care of you since you were a baby, so I am responsible for this bad character of yours."
"Dad!" she shrieked but he shut her up. "Mattie, I will take responsibility for you, I would rather get embarrassed than watch you go to that monstrous Landon." he let out.
Speaking of Landon, only then did Mattie’s thoughts turn to Landon, to the letter of transfer she had promised him.
A cold smile spread across her face as she realized that her father’s downfall was within her grasp.
And with that thought, Mattie’s eyes locked onto her father’s, a fierce determination burning within them. She would bring him down, no matter the cost.
Zach’s eyes narrowed as he turned back to face his daughter, his voice low
"Whatever scheme you’re cooking up in that twisted mind of yours, Mattie, let me make one thing clear. You try to mess things up, and you would be the one who ends up getting burned."
He took a step closer to her, his eyes blazing with a fierce intensity. "Don’t think for a second that I don’t know about your little games, Mattie. I know all about the manipulations, the lies, the deceit. You think you’re clever, but you’re not as smart as you think you are."
"Dad!"
"I shouldn’t have cleaned your first kill, I should have taken you to the juvey, you are sick!" Mattie bursted out laughing crazily.
"Yes! I am sick! I am obsessed with Julain Dad!" Zach nodded his head, "Yeah, but you were the one who cheated on him, you didn’t know the advantage of love surrounding you until now."
He shot her a glare before walking out of her room shutting the door and Mattie yelled, screamed, throwing things at the door.
"I will make you all pay!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls as she hurled another glass against the door. The sound of shattering glass was music to her ears, a tangible expression of the turmoil raging inside her.
Exhausted and spent, Mattie collapsed onto her bed, burying her face in the duvet as she sobbed uncontrollably.
Her body shook with each ragged breath, her tears soaking into the fabric.
But her solitude was short-lived. The door creaked open once more, and Mattie’s irritation flared anew. She sprang from the bed, her eyes burning with fury as she snatched up a pillow.
"Everyone just leave me alone!" she yelled, hurling the pillow at the door with all her might.
But Astrid was quick, she caught the pillow with ease, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
And then, in a move that caught Mattie off guard, Astrid threw the pillow back at her. It hit Mattie with a soft "bop" on the head, sending her temper soaring.
Mattie’s eyes flashed with anger, and she spun around, ready to launch herself at Astrid.
But as she saw Astrid leaning nonchalantly against the door, she pulled out her hands in a "Hi" position.
"Miss me?" she drawled.
