Chapter 271: MAREN & MILES
Maren sauntered into Miles’ office, her slender figure draped in a silky nightgown and a matching robe that hugged her curves in all the right places.
The dim lighting in the room danced across her face, bringing out the exhaustion etched on her face. She had gotten back from work a few hours ago, but Miles wasn’t in the room, she tried sleeping without him but it was working.
She cradled a glass of wine in her hand, the crystal reflecting the soft glow of the desk lamp.
As she approached Miles, who was engrossed in his laptop, his gaze drifted up, and his eyes roamed over her, drinking in the sight of her.
For a moment, he forgot about the work in front of him, his mind consumed by the vision of loveliness before him.
"I told you not to dress like this with men around," he said without a happy face.
Maren rolled her eyes and plopped down beside him, her hip brushing against his as she dropped her wine on the desk.
Miles shifted, making room for her, his eyes never leaving hers. She reached out, her slender fingers closing around his glasses, and gently pulled them off his face.
Her hand cupped his chin, and she turned his face toward hers, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"You made me come down here, and now you’re focusing on your work?" she teased, leaning closer to him.
Miles’ gaze softened, and he closed his laptop, his eyes never leaving hers. "I am sorry," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "I just got an emergency."
Maren’s expression remained questioning, her eyes narrowed slightly. Then Miles leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a gentle, apologetic kiss. The touch sent shivers down her spine, and she felt her exhaustion melt away.
He trailed kisses along her nose, forehead, and cheeks, each touch igniting a spark within her. His lips danced across her eyelids, and she felt her eyes flutter closed, her heart racing with delight.
As he kissed her neck, a series of soft, gentle kisses that sent shivers down her spine, Maren felt herself melting into him. Her arms wrapped around his waist, pulling him closer, and she buried her face in the crook of his neck.
Miles’ hands wrapped around her back, holding her close as he whispered apologies in her ear. Maren shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just feel like being close to you."
Miles’ grip on her tightened, and he pulled back, his eyes searching hers. "What’s wrong?" he asked, his voice filled with concern noticing how she had just acted.
Maren released him, her eyes locking onto his. "Nothing’s wrong," she said, a soft smile playing on her lips. "I just know you need this more than I do after the whole family saga."
Miles’ eyes softened, and he smiled, his face relaxing into a look of gratitude.
"I have you, I have my dad, a good sister, and a best friend who wouldn’t turn on me," he said, happily.
Maren’s eyes sparkled with tears as she reached out, her lips brushing against his in a soft, gentle kiss. "You can break down in front of me, Miles," she whispered. "I promise I won’t tell."
Miles’ broke into a taunting chuckle, "You’ve seen me at my worst, Maren. Why would I be embarrassed?"
Maren’s face scrunched up in a frown. "I should be apologizing for bringing me into your messed-up family," he added, his eyes boring into hers.
Maren shook her head, her eyes locked onto his. "Trust me, Miles, my family is way more messed up than yours." Miles nuzzled his nose around hers, feeling relief she was with him right now, his whole stress depleted immediately.
"Thank you, Maren," he whispered, his lips brushing against her ear. "Just being near you makes me feel better."
Maren was excited hearing this from the one she had loved all her life, but the thought soon shot to life when she recalled something.
"What do you plan to do to Mattie?" he looked up at Mare, he knew she had been worried about that all this while.
"Well, the only thing I can say is that she is going to suffer more than you expect, she is so dangerous".
Maren’s voice trembled at the thought of her sister’s downward spiral, and the weight of Mattie’s bad records threatened to crush her.
"I know I shouldn’t be feeling worried about her.." her voice trailed the thought.
Miles wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "She was once my sister and she isn’t someone I can just abandon, so I can relate so well with you.
"Her punishment isn’t up to me," he said gently. "Astrid and Julian will handle it," he added
Maren’s gaze drifted to Miles, her eyes searching for reassurance.
"We may not have grown up together, but she’s still my sister," Maren admitted not being able to keep it in her anymore.
Miles’ fingers caressed her face, his touch soothing her frazzled nerves.
"You are not responsible for Mattie’s or your father’s actions, Maren," he said softly. "You are your person, with your own identity."
A hint of a smile played on Maren’s lips as she recalled her first encounter with Miles. "I remember when I first saw you," she said, her voice filled with delight. "I told myself you would be mine."
Miles chuckled, not only did she tell herself but also made it known to him.
"I hope you are not beginning to regret that you have me with you now. After all, I am the pursuer."
"You did pursue me, didn’t you?" Miles teased. "But now, I am the one who can’t do without you."
Maren leaned in, her lips brushing against his in a soft, gentle kiss.
As they pulled back, Miles’ expression turned serious. "Whatever Mattie and Landon have done, it’s not your fault," he reminded her. "You’re not defined by their actions, and that doesn’t define our love, so get whatever thing that is making you worried out of your head."
Maren nodded in approval, "If it will make her a better person, I am in support of whatever Astrid and Julian decide."
Miles’ eyes sparkled with admiration now pulling one of her hands which was on his shoulder, he placed so many kisses there.
"My girl is so smart," he whispered, his lips tracing the curve of her ear. "I am the luckiest man alive to have you by my side."
As Miles’ kisses trailed down her neck, Maren felt her worries fade away, the fact that he still loved her no matter the reason put her mind at ease.
