Chapter 243: DID YOU MISS ME?
The day of Josh’s funeral had finally arrived, and the atmosphere was somber and mournful.
The funeral home was packed with friends, family, and acquaintances who had come to pay their respects to the deceased.
Nadine and Leila were visibly distraught, their eyes red and puffy from crying. They sat in the front row, surrounded by flowers and condolences from well-wishers.
Just then the Adams, Tonia, Miles, and Zach made their way to the front to greet the family.
"Our condolences," She let out and Leila could only nod her head at this.
Miles and Zach also offered their condolences and respect, and Leila, though emotional, managed to thank them for coming. Nadine, on the other hand, seemed too lost in her grief to respond.
As the ceremony began, Donald Gilbert walked in and took a seat in the back not after the great respect sent his way.
Nadine couldn’t help but notice the amount of powerful men who had come to pay their respects to her father.
She felt a mix of emotions, sadness, rage, and gratitude, her father had always wanted to be close to these people and would do anything to get the opportunity.
Not too long also The Logan family arrived soon after, and the press began to flood the area, eager to capture photos and footage of the mourners.
News has already gone around about Josh’s death, not because he is a prominent businessman but because they find out he is the father of Astrid.
Leila, still trying to compose herself, glanced at the Logan family, "Thanks a lot for coming, I wouldn’t have thought we could pull people as powerful as you here." Leila appreciated it.
"We dare not honor this, after all, you are the parent of my son’s wife," Leila nodded and let out a painful smile.
"Speaking of that... I still don’t get why my daughter wouldn’t be at the funeral of her son’s father." Becky hesitated for a while before responding.
"Astrid hasn’t been herself since her father’s passing. She’s been struggling to come to terms with her loss."
Leila’s eyes rolled, not believing a word Becky had said. "If she cared about her father, she should be here to show her respect,"
Becky was about to talk but Desmond grabbed her hands shaking his head, and then she let out a little grin.
"I won’t," she promised, and only then did Desmond let go of her.
Becky moved closer to Leila, embracing her for the cameras, but her words were laced with a subtle warning.
"Leila, I understand you are grieving, but don’t speak ill of Astrid. She’s going through a tough time, and we’re all trying to support her."
But that only piques more, "I don’t dare to breathe the same air as Astrid since she now has a powerful family ready to fight for her."
The room fell silent, with all eyes on Leila, But before anyone could respond, a commotion at the back of the room caught everyone’s attention.
When someone screamed, "Astrid’s here!" all heads turned to see Astrid and Julian quietly walking into the room.
Astrid wore a big pair of sunglasses that covered her eyes, and her face was pale and drawn. She was dressed in a simple black dress, and her hair was pulled back in a ponytail.
As Astrid made her way to the front, Leila’s eyes narrowed, her expression held furry.
Astrid ignored the gaze she held and she walked up to the coffin, her eyes fixed on her father’s lifeless body, and for a moment, she just stood there, frozen in grief.
The room was silent, with all eyes on Astrid as she paid her respects to her father.
Julian stood beside her, his eyes fixed on her face, his expression supportive and comforting.
As Astrid finally turned away from the coffin, Leila’s eyes flashed with anger.
"You’re too late, "You should have been here earlier to show your respect.
Astrid looked back at her father’s coffin, and quietly bowed her head again, she whispered, "That was the last respect I could ever pay for you."
She then turned to her stepmother again, and showed her respect, bowing her head slightly.
Everyone in the room couldn’t help but infer about Astrid’s past, how she had been bullied and grown up in a bad household, yet still had the patience for their shenanigans.
Tears slipped from her eyes, and Julian grabbed her by the arms, trying to comfort her.
"I am sorry for your loss," Astrid said her voice barely above a whisper. She then moved closer to Leila, leaning her head on Leila’s shoulder, her hands circling Leila like she wanted comfort from her.
"Leila, don’t forget that the company is still in my name. Now that my father is dead, I can assume control of it and even the mansion you live in."
Leila’s eyes widened in surprise, her gist tinged about to pull her away but Astrid grabbed her hands, caressing it as she pulled away from the embrace.
Astrid just looked at her calmly and said, "You need to be careful, Leila. Everyone in this room is watching you, and if you attack me again, I still won’t react. But it will only make more people hate you."
Leila’s face twisted in anger, but she couldn’t say anything. She tightened her fist, "Goodbye," Astrid let out, and with that, she found her way out of the funeral room leaving everyone speechless.
Outside the funeral home, Astrid met her grandfather, who was waiting for her. She embraced him tightly and burst into tears. "Oh my little girl," Donald patted her while Tonia rolled her eyes in disgust.
"You have all the time to mourn, but now you need to be strong," he advised.
"Thanks, granddad.." she appreciated while Tonia scoffed.
"Dad, can’t believe all of her acts, Astrid is a slow-burning snake. She’s been manipulating everyone, and now Mattie is hiding because of her."
Donald sighed now glaring at Tonia, "Can you ease being reasonable for once, you are just like a mother to her but also enjoy bullying her, she doesn’t need all these from you." Donald cautioned his daughter.
His eyes met with Julian who had been quiet all this while, "I want to talk to you." he announced.
Julian looked down at Astrid, telling her to wait for him in the car. Astrid nodded and began to walk away.
As she passed Tonia, Zach moved forward, his eyes meeting Astrid’s. Astrid felt a burning sensation like they had once known each other from somewhere.
Until Tonia cleared her throat, "I know things are hard for you, Astrid, but I hope you know you can fall back on me when you need help."
Tonia snarled at this, "You don’t care about Mattie, but here you are, caring about Astrid, whom you’ve just met."
Zach didn’t say anything, just patted Astrid’s shoulders. "Thanks, uncle I will keep that in mind," Astrid thanked and then walked off.
Just as she got to the parking lot, her phone buzzed. She pulled it out to see a message from an unknown number. She opened it, and the first message caught her attention immediately.
"Don’t you like to see the picture of your biological dad?" Astrid’s heart skipped a beat as she read the message.
She swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she waited for the file to be sent. When it finally arrived, she clicked on it, and a picture opened, showing her biological father.
Astrid stared at the picture, with a series of feelings swirling in her as she wondered where this picture had come from and how they got her details.
She was still staring at it when someone cleared his throat, making her look up. She was left flabbergasted, her eyes fixed on the man standing before her as her tongue stuck in her throat.
The same picture that had been sent to her claiming to be her father was the same man standing right here before her.
"Hello, my little angel," he mumbled, patting her head. "Don’t you miss me?"
