Chapter 124: HOSPITAL SCENE
Astrid and Maren got to her mum’s ward. She planned not to go to the office that day since she was mad at her husband and would spend it on her mum.
There she met her mum walking out of the bathroom looking neat and fresh.
"Mum.." she called excitedly as she pulled her mum into an embrace.
Marem smiled, dropping the basket filled with food on the table. Astrid had brought their food so they could enjoy lunch with her mum.
"Mum, I just asked the doctor about your health, and he said you’re doing fine. We don’t have to worry about the test."
Astrid’s face lit up with a warm smile as she shared the good news with her mother.
Her mother’s eyes sparkled with relief, that her daughter wouldn’t get stressed much.
"I am also excited, my sweet girl." She answered even though she was a bit sad she lied to her but it was for the best.
Astrid’s smile broadened as she began to set the table for food.
"See, Mum, I made your favorite dish and a happy family food. It’s been a while." she cheered.
Maren was already seated, as she helped Elzahth settle down, "Your daughter is a great cook so I believe you will enjoy it."
"Of course my dear, I am happy to eat her food again after many months,"
Astrid served the food, carefully helping her mother with her portion.
The table was filled with the savory aromas of roasted chicken, creamy mashed potatoes, and steamed green beans.
The chicken was cooked to perfection, with a crispy golden-brown skin and juicy tender meat.
Alongside the main course, Astrid had also prepared a fresh garden salad with crisp lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette dressing.
As they sat down to eat, Astrid’s mother couldn’t help but smile at the lovingly prepared meal. The food was a testament to Astrid’s care and thoughtfulness.
They enjoyed their meal peacefully chatting around, with Elizabeth getting to know Maren more.
Just when they were done, Maren and Astrid packed up, the door swung open, and Josh walked in.
The room fell silent, and Astrid’s smile faltered.
As Astrid flew up from her chair, her eyes blazed with a fierce determination.
She swung into action, her movements swift. Maren, who was watching from the sidelines, could see the distrust etched on Astrid’s face. It was clear that Astrid didn’t trust her father, Josh, one bit.
"Why are you here?" Astrid demanded, her voice low and even. Josh, however, just let out a smile, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"Little one, don’t butt into this. It’s between your mother and me," he said, Astrid’s eyes narrowed, her face set in a fierce scowl.
"Not on my watch," she spat, "I am never going to let you talk to her."
Josh’s smile grew wider, his eyes glinting with malice. "We will see about that," he sneered.
As Josh moved towards Astrid, Maren could see the fear rising in her eyes.
But Astrid stood her ground, her chin set in a fierce determination. Josh, however, was not to be underestimated. He was a big man, with a powerful build, and he used his size to intimidate Astrid.
As he reached out to grab her, Astrid tried to dodge, but Josh was too quick. He grabbed her hair, pulling her back, and Astrid’s eyes widened in pain. Maren gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in horror.
"How dare you, ungrateful brat!" Josh yelled, his face twisted in a snarl. He pushed Astrid towards the door, and she stumbled, her face slamming into the wood.
Maren could hear the sound of Astrid’s cry, and she felt a surge of anger towards Josh.
Elizabeth, who had been watching from the bed, suddenly sat up even though it was hard, her eyes blazing with fury.
"Josh, don’t hurt my kid!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls.
Maren felt a shiver run down her spine as she watched Josh turn towards Elizabeth. His eyes were cold.
"How could you hurt your daughter that way?" Maren demanded, her voice firm and steady. Josh turned towards her, his eyes narrowing.
"What did you just say to me?" he sneered, his voice dripping with malice.
Maren stood her ground, her eyes locked on Josh’s. "Are you going to hit me like you just hit your daughter?" she asked, her voice steady.
Astrid, who had been watching from the sidelines, suddenly sprang into action. "Maren, please!" she cried, her voice trembling. "He’s a monster! He’s going to hurt you!"
But Maren stood her ground, her eyes locked on Josh’s. "Hit me!" she spat.
"Isn’t that what you’re good at?"
"Maren, dear," she called, Elizabeth’s voice soft and gentle, as she moved closer to her. "Can you please take Astrid out? I want to speak with him alone."
Astrid’s face set in a fierce scowl. "Mum, but he’s going to hurt you!" she protested.
But Elizabeth just shook her head. "Maren, please," she repeated.
Maren nodded, her eyes never leaving Josh’s face. She turned to Astrid, her voice firm. "Come on, Astrid. Let’s get out of here."
Astrid hesitated, her eyes fixed on her mother. But Maren grabbed her arm, pulling her towards the door. "Come on, Astrid," she repeated.
As they walked out Astrid’s face was etched with worry. "He’s a monster," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He’s going to hurt my mum."
Maren pulled her into a tight hug. "We won’t let that happen," she whispered back. "I promise."
As they stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, Maren could feel the fear emanating from Astrid.
"Look at me!" she yelled and this time Astrid called down.
"He won’t hurt your mum, if he does I will help you haunt him. She stared at Maren and could see the seriousness there.
"Fine, I would be calm," she whispered, trying to force in her tears until her gaze met with Leila and Nadine.
"What are you doing here?" she fired at them before they got closer
Nadine’s spiteful eyes change to care seeing Maren.
"Sister we heard your mum is awake and thought of coming to greet her," Astrid let out a bitter laugh.
"You have no right going in there, so stay outside here and await your father so you can leave."
"Astrid, I might not be the one who had given birth to you, but I took care of you when your mother wasn’t there for you,"
"I never needed your care. Dad was the one who refused to hand me over to my mother and you’ve never been her mother to me so please stop playing the pitiful card." Maren smiled at this then stepped forward.
"I wouldn’t have done that if she had a good relationship with you both but if she doesn’t, I think you should step back so you don’t lose the respect I have for you now," Leila was about to respond when Nadine shook her head.
She wasn’t ready to lose the little opportunity she was about to get from Maren.
"Good," Astrid whispered and just then few doctors ran past them into a
Mmjm world leaving her worried.
"What is wrong?" she asked but none answered her.
"Maren, I feel something is wrong with my mother," Maren sensed the trouble but needed to calm her down.
"Astrid we can’t say for sure lets..." but before she could complete her sentence.
Astrid burst into the room, there she was met with a scene that seemed to unfold in slow motion.
The beeping of the life-saving machine grew louder, and the doctor’s frantic voice pierced the air. There her father stood in shock staring at her mother.
Astrid’s eyes widened as she took in the sight of her mother’s frail body, now surrounded by the sterile hospital equipment.
"Mum!" Astrid screamed, her voice hoarse with desperation. She tried to rush to her mother’s side, but Maren grabbed her arms, holding her back.
"Astrid, no! You can’t go in there!" Maren pleaded, her voice firm but gentle.
But Astrid was out of control, she thrashed about, trying to break free from Maren’s grip.
Her eyes were fixed on her mother, and she could feel her heart shattering into a million pieces.
The doctor’s voice grew louder, more urgent. "We’re losing her! We need to act fast!"
Astrid’s screams grew louder, more anguished. She felt like she was living in a nightmare, and she couldn’t wake up.
Maren’s grip on her arms tightened, but Astrid didn’t feel it. She was numb, her senses overwhelmed by the chaos around her. The nurses tried to push them out of the room but it was hard.
Just when it seemed like Astrid was going to collapse, Julain swept into the room and he pulled Astrid into his arm.
Astrid felt herself being pulled into Julian’s arms, felt his warmth and strength enveloping her. She had no choice but to bury her face in his chest, her body shaking with sobs.
