Chapter 57: Rough Start.
With his bag slung over one shoulder, he climbed the steps to his apartment, his boots scuffing softly on the concrete.
The door clicked shut behind him, sealing him in the familiar quiet of his small space, he didn’t bother stopping until he made it to his room.
The faint musty scent of the room was without a doubt different from the academy’s polished halls. Till this moment, He didn’t notice the black car that had parked up the street the instant the taxi dropped him off, its engine idling as it blended into the shadows of the dimly lit neighborhood.
Inside the car, a middle-aged man in a tailored black suit adjusted his tinted sunglasses, the lenses glinting faintly under a streetlamp’s glow. His face was all angles, weathered yet composed, with a thin scar running along his jawline that hinted at a life of constant risks.
He pulled a phone from his pocket and dialed a number. The call connected after a single ring, and his voice, low and clipped, carried a professional detachment. " Forgive me for interrupting you miss but I wanted to inform you that the young man has recovered and made it home safe." he said, his tone betraying nothing beyond the facts.
In a luxurious room across the city, Sasha Miguel stepped out of her shower, a white towel wrapped loosely around her athletic frame, her short pink hair damp and clinging to her neck.
The room luxurious, decorated with plush carpets, a wide bed draped in silk, a crystal chandelier casting soft light and so many other extravagant furniture. but Sasha’s focus wasn’t on her room but on the phone vibrating on her bed.
She crossed the room, her bare feet silent on the floor, and picked it up, her red eyes narrowing as she saw the caller. "Report." she said, her voice sharper and more composed than when she’d shown when tossing money at Lin Mu’s bloodied face.
Sasha’s lips pressed into a thin line after listening to the man’s words, her fingers tightening around the phone. "Good," she said, her tone clipped but laced with a trace of unease. "You can return now. And don’t forget to never speak a word of this to anyone." She ended the call before he could respond, tossing the phone onto the bed with a flick of her wrist.
As a member of the Miguel family, a famous and revered family of successful heroes, she couldn’t have her family knowing about her little alteration at school. She didn’t need to think to know that they wouldn’t hesitate to deal with Lin Mu severely... Especially her parents. Those two wouldn’t hesitate to make Lin Mu’s life a living hell if they got wind of the fact that a meer bumpkin had dared to lay a finger on their beloved daughter.
’There’s no doubt that he was irritating , but that’s no reason to put him through hell.’
’ The poor guy will probably begin rethinking his life choices from tomorrow onwards after that hit I gave him.’
She slumped onto the silk sheets, the towel shifting slightly as she stared at her hand, the same hand that had sent Lin Mu sprawling.
" Still though." Her frown deepened, her mind replaying the moment she’d struck him.
"How did he recover so fast?" she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper, tinged with a mix of irritation and curiosity. "Even if I held back, that hit should’ve kept him down longer. The academy’s medical tech is good, but not that good. I should know... after all, father is their number one donator."
" Just who is he?"
She leaned back, her red eyes glinting in the chandelier’s light, her athletic build tense despite the softness of the bed. Sasha was no stranger to power, her family’s influence and her own talent had carved her a place at Tian Jiang the moment she decided to register, but Lin Mu’s strange resilience unsettled her.
’ What am I thinking... Maybe he just has a defensive ability.’
’ There’s nothing special about it.’
’ But... My meta cells are in double digits. Could a single digit defensive ability really block my hit like that?’
’ Maybe he’s already made it to double digits as well?’
’ No... That’s not possible. It’s already rare for me to reach double digits at just the age of 16.’
’ There’s just no way a bumpkin like him could do it’ She shook her head, as if to dispel the thought, and turned her attention to the city skyline visible through her window, its lights a glittering distraction.
As for the thought that Lin Mu could be someone in a situation similar to hers, being the heir of a well known family, the thought never crossed her mind because she was already informed of every influencial figure that would be joining the academy as well as those already joined before hand.
Across town, Lin Mu sat cross-legged on his narrow bed, the springs creaking faintly under his weight. The room was sparse, but still had all the average furniture and items you could find in a teenagers room, which showed just how much his late grandfather had done for him, sparing no expense for his only grandson.
In Lin Mu’s hand, he held ten Blood Pills he’d just purchased from the system shop, their crimson surfaces catching the light like tiny rubies.
The purchase had emptied out his remaining system coins which he had managed to acquire during his meal with Lian, Mei and his father-in-law.
Right now he wasn’t thinking about his sudden plummet in finances. Instead, His dark eyes, usually so guarded, burned with a level of intensity as he stared at them, his mind flashing back to Sasha’s contemptuous gaze, her red eyes looking down at him as he lay bloodied on the academy lawn.
The memory stung, not just from the physical pain but from the humiliation, the way her casual dismissal had cut deeper than her fist, reminding him of all the times everyone around him had treated him like nothing but a piece of trash no matter what he did.
’ That damned b*tch!’
’ Damnit! Damnit! Damnit!’
’ I refuse to let it end like this!’
