Chapter 49: Chapter 49 A Pulse of New Power

Chapter 49: The Pulse of New Power.

"Lang Shen fought for me?" he said aloud, his voice tinged with incredulity. Inwardly, his thoughts raced.

’ Why would he do that? He looked like he was out to get me before.’

’ Did something change after the incident? Did he actually start to see me differently?’

"He did," Mei confirmed, her voice quieter now, sounding thoughtful, even she as well found it hard to believe.

"Though it’s put him at odds with his older brother. They’re not exactly on speaking terms right now." She tilted her head, studying Lin Mu with a hint of suspicion. "You didn’t do anything to him during the hunt did you"

"No!" Lin Mu admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

" of course not." He leaned back against the mat, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

’ Technically, Autumn wind was the one who scared them stiff.’

Lin Mu couldn’t help recalling Lang Shen’s actions during the Jebaki fight. Now that he thought about it, he did seem different back then as well.

But before he could dwell on it further, a sudden realization hit him like a thunderbolt, sending a jolt of panic through his chest. His eyes widened, and he sat up abruptly, nearly dislodging the twins. "Wait," he said, his voice trembling. "If Lang Shen fought for me... and he won... then that means—"

Lian’s lips curved into a sly, knowing smile, her claws tracing idle patterns on the mat. "That’s right," she said, her voice low and teasing. "You’re engaged to us now, you stubborn idiot. Using Lang Shen’s strength, you fought for our hands, and the tribe’s laws are clear. There’s no backing out now."

Mei leaned in, her azure eyes gleaming with mischief. "You’re stuck with us," she added, her tail brushing against his arm in a playful, possessive gesture. "Better get used to it."

Lin Mu’s heart pounded, his mind spiraling as the weight of their words settled over him.

He was now engaged, no loop holes, no technicalities, but Engaged. To Lian and Mei.

The reality of it was dizzying, a tangle of exhilaration and terror that left him breathless. He stared at the twins, their vibrant, feline features lit with a mix of affection and challenge, and he realized with a sinking certainty that his life had just taken a turn from which there was no return.

’ What have I gotten myself into?’ he thought, his pulse racing as the Chapter of his life in the Serinerian tribe took on a new, uncharted course.

The air in the tribal camp buzzed with a contagious joy, a warmth that seemed to radiate from the very earth beneath their feet. The Serinerian tribesmen, their faces painted with relief and pride, gathered in clusters, their laughter and chatter creating a vibrant celebration. One they hadn’t had in a long time.

Lin Mu’s recovery had sparked a fire of hope among them, a beacon after days of uncertainty. The scent of roasting meat mingled with the crisp bite of early evening air, and children darted between tents, their squeals piercing the rhythmic thump of drums. For the first time in weeks, the camp felt alive, as if the spirits of their ancestors had descended to join the revelry.

Lin Mu who had quickly gotten exhausted, slipped away from the festivities.

His dark eyes, sharp and contemplative, flickered toward the hunting party who were still going about it, dancing and celebrating.

" Looks like those guys are still as energetic as ever." He easily remembered the tales they told him about what happened during their hunts while he was unconscious.

Their tales of tracking a massive horned boar through the sun scorching desert, had been vivid, but Lin Mu’s heart wasn’t in it.

His body, though healed, still carried the weight of his recent ordeal, like a faint ache in his bones, a reminder of the void that had nearly claimed him. It was a stern reminder that even now he was still weak. Incapable of protecting his own life even after gaining such emmence potential.

He murmured his farewells, his voice low and measured, and retreated to the solitude of his tent, the flap falling shut behind him like a curtain on the world.

Inside, the dim glow of a single oil lamp casted flickering shadows across the woven walls, the air heavy with the scent of dried herbs and leather.

Lin Mu settled onto a mat, his posture rigid yet weary, as if the act of sitting was a negotiation with his own body.

" So what should I do now, going out of camp now to train would be hopeless... Moreover I’m almost out of time."

" I can’t believe it’s been nearly ten days."

He ran a hand through his dark, slightly tangled hair. Alone at last, he let out a slow breath, his mind sharpening as he spoke into the quiet.

"System," he said, his voice steady but tinged with a faint edge of anticipation.

" You mentioned something about unlocking new functions last time. I’d like to know what those are."

"what new functions have I unlocked?"

«[Prior to your loss of consciousness, you unlocked the Shop Function and the Upgraded Reward Function.]» The words sounded mechanical, yet there was an undercurrent of something almost smug, as if the system was delighted in its own revelations.

«[The Shop Function allows the exchange of resources for System Coins, which can be used to purchase items from the System Store.]»

«[The Upgraded Reward Function enhances the quality and quantity of rewards for completed tasks, Moreover, it also increases the type of items allowed for conversion.]»

Lin Mu’s lips pressed into a thin line, his brow furrowing as he processed the information. The Shop Function sounded promising, similar to a lifeline in a world where strength was the only currency that mattered.

But the system’s rewards had always been a double-edged sword... generous when it suited, stingy when he needed it most. He leaned back slightly, the mat creaking under his weight, and asked.

" Open the system store..."

«[I’m afraid I can’t do that. To access the system store, you need to use the system artifact]»
