A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods -
Chapter 90: Let’s go Fishing!
Chapter 90: Let’s go Fishing!
A month passed by quickly after the events of her parents trying to drag her out of the farm. However, it seems that their tactics were not working. Elaina is not doing much spectacular stuff to deal with their tactics, it’s just that, their methods are either easily countered or just plain ineffective and nothing happens much to them.
She also heard from Princess Tabatha that the prediction they had on the business and the business counter-strategy that Elaina proposed worked wonders allowing her to thwart whatever Elaina’s parents were planning. By now, they are not doing anything and according to Princess Tabatha, it seems that they are planning on leaving anytime now.
As for the soldiers, there are still the occasional attacks but because nothing has changed, they either give up before everything works or they will only do occasional attacks that don’t last that long. In short, things have finally returned to normal for Elaina. There are still risks but it’s not as troublesome as before.
At the moment, Elaina is slowly getting used to her life as a farmer as well. Not only that but her Morning Sickness has lessened as well. The only thing that Elaina is trying to prepare soon is when she starts craving something. She hasn’t developed any cravings just yet so she is relieved but she wanted to ensure that what she will be craving will be something normal and nutritious. After all, she heard that some pregnant women get some unusual cravings that are either passable or downright bizarre and troublesome.
...
...
...
Right now, farm work is done much earlier than expected. The plants have grown slightly but since they will not do much until they start developing more, Elaina has more time for herself right now.
"Hmmm...I am bored..." Elaina is currently sitting on the seat that she put underneath the tree, facing the stream. She has relocated her seat as the previous location of the seat has been used as space for the house of the Fey.
"Why not have a good sleep? Aren’t pregnant women also like to sleep a lot by the day?" the Harvest Goddess suggested while she was floating on her stream.
"Eh...I am not sleepy. And I don’t want to sleep. I wanted to do something that could make me move around instead of being passive. And I am not like you who likes to laze around."
"Hey, that’s not lazing around, but "conserving energy", both words are different just so you know. Besides, I needed this to ensure that I have enough power I can use in case I needed to use it."
Elaina sighed as she tried to rack her brains on what to do. Then, she remembers the unlockables on her Almanac. She has forgotten about it as she is more focused on completing the daily quests posted instead of unlocking the locked pages.
But because she is so bored right now, Elaina is interested in taking the first step to see if she can push the necessary prerequisites to unlock the locked pages. She opened the almanac and flipped through to the countless locked pages.
"Hey, Harvest Goddess, can you see this Almanac?" Elaina asked as she showed the floating book.
"Yeah. That is the blessing given to you by my boss, yes? So? What about it? Something wrong with it? Shouldn’t you ask him about it if there are some problems?"
"No, no. I am just asking if you can see it. After all, other people aside from me are not able to even see this if it is manifested."
"I am also considered as a minor god, you know? Even if I am a weak one and cannot be considered as a central goddess like the boss and the others, I still have a bit of powers that are similar to the gods so things like that book are normal for us to see."
"If that is the case, can you suggest something for me that I can do to unlock any of these locked pages?" Elaina then showed the Harvest Goddess the locked pages.
"Huh, these are just normal stuff that you can do slowly but surely, yes? You wanted something that you might want to unlock first? You wanted my input and suggestion?"
"Yep," Elaina nodded a few times to enforce her willingness to hear her suggestion."
"Okay then..."
The Harvest Goddess started to squint her eyes a few times before she made a suggestion.
"How about fishing? You have a fishing rod, right? The stream here is very accessible for fishing as well. Fishes are living here and I can guarantee that you would like to eat the fishes here."
"You don’t mind me fishing here?" Elaina was surprised.
"Why not? I also fish here back then when you have yet to move in this farm whenever I am bored. I only ever used a thin thread I got from the vine and stuck it on a stick and used an earthworm and a little bit of my magic that would act as the hook to catch the fish and bam, I got my fishing rod."
Elaina remembered the fishing rod she got back when Marigold introduced her to the residents and the nice guy living near the shore who is a fisherman and owner of the shack that sells and rents fishing gear. Ever since she got the fishing rod, she didn’t get time to even use it.
She had some good experience fishing herself back then when she was still trying to survive the wild forest. She was self-taught before but she is not that good at it especially since she used a makeshift fishing rod. It’s been a while but perhaps her instincts kick in again.
"Are you sure I won’t be waiting long before I get to have a bite here? Just so you know, I have experience in fishing. I know the experience."
"Trust me. You won’t wait long before you get a bite."
...
...
...
Trusting the Harvest Goddess, she pulled her fishing gear out of the storage and ready it for fishing. She also gathered a few baits she dug up. Since she sees earthworms many times, especially during the time she tills the soil, she knows there are lots of bait that will be good for attracting fish.
"You should also prepare a small basket as well if you plan to keep fishing here for a while. Don’t expect to get a small catch here. There are plenty of fish here, you will catch a lot."
Elaina complied and prepared the basket, the fishing rod, the bait, and also the chair that she uses when she is relaxing.
"Everything ready?" the Harvest Goddess asked while she was floating in the air.
"Of course," Elaina revealed the Fishing rod already with the bait attached.
"In that case, cast the rod and wait for the fish to bite! It might be easy but that doesn’t mean fishing does not require a skill!" the Harvest Goddess seems to be excited.
"Woah, I didn’t know you were into fishing."
"Ha, just so you know, I also like fish, so it’s natural that I also like to fish. I may be focusing more on vegetable crops and fruits when it comes to my powers but that doesn’t mean that will influence what my likes are. And fishing is one of them."
Elaina nodded. If that is how confident she is, perhaps she can even teach her if she is wrong in what she is doing.
Casting the bobber to the water, the line is finally cast and ready to lure in some fish. Elaina is not convinced that she will immediately catch fish knowing that fishing requires patience.
But it seems she is wrong as it hasn’t been a few minutes since she cast the line to the water, that same line is now moving as it is tugged by a fish.
With the little tug from the line, Elaina didn’t waste any more time and started to reel in the fish with all her might. It was hard and Elaina is quite sure that the fish that caught the line is big.
"Reel it in, girl!" the Harvest Goddess cheered as Elaina gritted her teeth as she continued to fight the fish by continuously reeling the line. Elaina gripped the fishing rod hard, used her battle stance, and with a strong pull, the line surfaced out of the water, carrying the bobber, the hook, and the fish that was caught from it.
As soon as the fish was out of the water, Elaina grabbed the line and checked the fish. It was a very big fish that she didn’t know the name.
"Woah, this is big. Although it is not the biggest I have seen so far, this one is big indeed," The Harvest Goddess exclaimed, totally absorbed in checking the fish that she had caught.
"What fish is this?" Elaina asked.
"A perch."
"Eh? A perch? Shouldn’t perches be small?" Elaina frowned.
"Most species of perches do appear small, but some of them especially in undisturbed places like this stream, these fishes can grow big."
Elaina seems to have been infected by the excitement of the Harvest Goddess after seeing a big catch. Now she has a good way to spend her free time.
