A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods -
Chapter 60: Attack of the Kobolds
Chapter 60: Attack of the Kobolds
The day slowly moved on. Princess Margaux enjoyed the experience quite a lot despite Elaina’s normal and mundane routine of maintaining the farm looks pretty amazing in the eyes of the princess. She is not just exaggerating about it, but she genuinely did and Elaina is somewhat proud that she was not judged at all.
Afternoon finally arrived and Elaina finally completed her little work. Princess Margaux is currently sleeping underneath the tree where Elaina usually rests. Because Elaina suggested she take some time to experience it, she did try it and ended up sleeping underneath it.
Since Margaux was sleeping, Elaina opened her almanac and checked her dailies to see if she missed anything crucial. She didn’t get to open it as the princess was observing her and even if she couldn’t see, she would look unnatural to suddenly stop and daze in the middle of work which is why she avoided it. Seeing that all of her dailies were done, Elaina sighed in relief and stood up as she clapped her hands together to shake off all of the dirt that stuck on her gloves.
While finishing her last touches and preparing to end her work, the gate opened and Julia entered carrying multiple bags of groceries. Earlier, after they were done eating lunch, Julia wanted to buy some stuff that we were missing in the kitchen since we were running out of a lot of ingredients as well as condiments so she requested to buy one.
"Julia, since you are going to the city, can you also gather information regarding Princess Margaux? Since we are currently letting her stay on the farm we should know how the current investigation is doing. It is a good way to have an idea whether they are close or whether they are still actively doing their search."
Due to this order, Julia sets off and left after that, which means that now that Julia returned, that means she is also bearing the news regarding Princess Margaux and the current situation of the search.
"Sis, I have some news regarding Princess Margaux," Julia said as she struggled with her groceries.
"That can wait, put the groceries you bought inside first before you give me the report. Don’t rush as I am no longer royalty," Elaina said as she removed her gloves.
"Ah...sorry about that, Sis. I just found the news a bit in need to be reported for your knowledge."
Julia then rushes straight back inside the house and a few seconds later, came running back to Elaina after securing everything.
"So? How are the investigations doing? And why are you rushing? Is it that important for you to warrant the need of rushing?" Elaina asked.
"Ah, I don’t really know if the information I had is worth rushing over but I think it is a pretty important piece of info."
"Alright, let’s hear it. What is it now?"
"Well, according to what I heard, it seems multiple soldiers are now deployed all over the place. And according to what I heard, both of Princess Margaux’s brother and sister are now deployed to look for her."
"Brother and sister?"
"Yeah. Her brother is the First Prince. Although he relinquished his role on the throne to become a knight, he holds authority in the kingdom as he commands the knights. He is married to one of the female knights who is the vice commander of the knights. As for the sister, she is the one who will be the next ruler of the kingdom once the queen relinquishes her role. Despite being a noble, she is a talented individual and someone who knows the way of the sword due to the help of her brother. She is considered as one of the strongest swordswomen in the kingdom and many are happy that she will be taking the throne in the future."
"That’s a pretty stacked lineup of people searching for the missing person," Elaina was impressed.
"Yeah. And although this one is rumors only, I heard that there are also the shadow soldiers that are also deployed and one of the special ops that are deployed as well to find the location of the missing princess."
"But then...there’s no need for you to rush here if that is the case?" Elaina frowned.
"Naturally, but I am not done yet, sis. According to the information, it seems anyone who currently can hand over the princess will be given a reward."
"Reward?" Elaina frowned.
"Yeah. Like a bounty. It was like they were given to those who could give accurate information about Princess Margaux. It won’t be just a small reward but a very hefty reward at best."
After hearing it, Elaina immediately understood why. One of the things that the farm needs, is money. And since they have custody of the princess right now, they can just hand her over to them and they will receive rewards. However, this is something that she doesn’t truly need to do. And for her, this is like betraying the princess and handing her when she specifically asked to not be handed to the people searching for her. So even though the rewards are tempting, Elaina shook her head and decided.
"I know what you are suggesting Julia, but no. I don’t want to betray the princess’s trust. Money can be earned and even though we desperately need it, we don’t necessarily have any immediate uses for money. Besides, what would you think the princess would think of us if we handed her with money in thought? We are not greedy bastards who only mind money. If she is not ready to return, then we shouldn’t force her. Imagine this Julia, if Alfred decided to send his troops and give an award to those who can hand me over to them, are you going to surrender me to them?" Elaina tilted her head as she crossed her arms, waiting for Julia to answer.
"No way, Sis! I would never do that!" Julia immediately answered.
"Yes. That’s what I thought as well. She would have some circumstances aside from what she told us that she cannot say that might be plaguing her. If we hand her, then it would immediately spell her doom. We shouldn’t bother with it and allow her to do what she wants."
Hearing it, Julia felt a bit ashamed of what she was thinking after she was enlightened by Elaina’s answer and reasoning.
Little did they know, Princess Margaux was awake and overheard their conversation. She listened to them and after hearing the result, she smiled and continued her little sleep.
Elaina and Julia were about to carry the princess back inside when all of a sudden, kobolds appeared at the entrance. They are carrying weapons of different variety and their eyes are very hungry and hostile. Some of them are even drooling that they look like rabid dogs.
"Kobolds?! But it wasn’t nighttime just yet!" Julia frowned as she readied her spells.
"Looks like they are getting desperate now. Julia, carry Princess Margaux to safety. I will take care of this," Elaina’s face went serious as she picked up her sword.
"Are you sure, Sis? These guys are a lot!"
"Just help me once you made Princess Margaux safe inside. I will hold them off while you are still busy."
"Okay, be careful, Sis."
Julia didn’t bother to wake the princess and grab her up causing her to wake up in shock.
"Huh? What is going on?!" Princess Margaux wasn’t expecting things to happen as Julia carried her back to the house.
"I am just bringing you to safety," Julia then rushes as Elaina readies her sword.
The kobolds roared and started to attack, rushing with their weapons raised in the air.
"You messed with the wrong place!" Elaina swiftly pulled her sword from the sheath and cut down multiple kobolds in one swift slice. She then continued attacking the kobolds without stopping. As their numbers increase, Elaina continues to cut them one by one. Her body is now splattered with blood and multiple monster carcasses are littered on the ground as she continues to eliminate the kobolds fatally.
After a while, Julia joined as well. "Sis, I am here!"
"Just in time. These little monsters are increasing. Let’s thin them out to make sure that they learn their lessons."
Julia nodded and with Elaina, the two started to fight the attacking kobolds. Because the kobolds are not that intelligent and adept at using weapons, to Elaina and Julia, they are walking targets that are just easily disposed of.
It didn’t take them a few minutes to defeat every kobold attacking the farm. Elaina and Julia’s teamwork proved that even the number of monsters is nothing for them. As long as they can deal with them. After killing the final kobold, Elaina stood still in offensive mode while her eyes surveyed the surroundings for any hidden enemies. Julia also stopped after realizing there were no more monsters and began scanning the area to see whether there were any enemies nearby lurking.
"How is the situation, Julia?" Elaina asked, her guard still heightened.
"We are clear, Sis."
Elaina sighed before waving her sword, flicking off the blood on her sword. She glance at the carcasses of the kobolds scattered all over the entrance.
"Looks like we will have to go overtime this time."
...
...
...
While Elaina and Julia started to clean up the mess after the attack, a few people who are currently outside the detection range of Julia are currently observing them.
"We should report these to the First Princess and the prince. It seems some prominent sword master and a magician are keeping the princess safe for the time being."
"Do you think if the First Princess tried to fight against her, do you think the First Princess could defeat the swordswoman?" one of the guys asked.
"No offense to the First Princess but I don’t think she will be able to defeat this woman. If the First Princess is a beast, this woman we are looking at right now is a monster. Right now, we should retreat. After all, we only needed to confirm the safety of the second princess."
The men nodded before they disappeared into the darkness.
