Chapter 54: The Wandering Merchant

It’s been two days since the attack happened and although nothing big happened her farm remained fine as the attack was stopped before it happened, but her mind couldn’t stop thinking about the cat(?) that defended the farm that night. Upon finding the true form of the cat(?), Julia started calling it Shardu. Although Elaina is fine with the name that Julia gave it, she also can’t help on why she called it Shardu and why she seemed to have accepted the cat’s presence as if it is their pet.

The other day, Elaina tried to ask the goddess of taming and she quickly answered at her.

----

"[Ah, they are called Cait Bagora. Very rare to the point that you will only hear them as a legend by many that are capable of shapeshifting and are some of the more hostile monsters I know of. I was even surprised that this monster was here without you taming it with the gloves but I guess there are some cases of that happening. But this is indeed the first time I have seen a Cait Bagora to be so docile to humans.]"

"Cait Bagora...it doesn’t ring any bells. But since it is a very rare monster, that must be the reason. But...is it safe for us to keep this monster with us here? Seeing how it can transform itself, doesn’t that mean they are dangerous?"

"[Cait Bagora are carnivores but they are just like normal cats. Seeing how they are pretty docile for you and the other girl, I don’t think you will have to worry too much. Just make sure to not provoke it or anger it though as it might instead get dangerous].

------

Because of that, Elaina didn’t do anything much with the little guy. And besides, if not for its presence the other night, perhaps the Kobold will start rampaging on her fields and that is something she doesn’t want to happen. Knowing the Kobolds like to thrash around whenever they attack, Elaina doesn’t want to have her fields destroyed by monsters in the process.

Because of this, Elaina suddenly got an idea to have the doghouse repaired. It would be a good way to also make the Cait Bagora more docile and friendly to them aside from the constant feeding they do for it. If the Kobolds continue to pester the farm, having Shardu remain and help cause the monsters to stay away would be a tremendous help.

She had already thought of this yesterday but when she went to check on the Woodworks, Jacob was currently doing some work somewhere, making him unavailable for hire at the moment, therefore, the little project has not started at all.

Julia and Elaina made some little patches on the doghouse to reduce its leaking, it won’t entirely stop the leaks but it would lessen the water leaks and make the stay of Shardu bearable inside while it rains.

As for the Kobold attacks, Elaina has already reported this matter and the guild already dispatched a few adventurers to deal with the Kobolds. It seems that it is currently the hunting season for the kobolds which is why they are currently out in the open and are attacking. It just so happens that they set their sights on the farm as they thought that we were easy pickings.

Their attacks will lessen significantly but it’s not a guarantee to stop the attacks entirely so we still need to take caution about the attacks. We would have to use the bell that was installed by the guild to call for backup in the future in case they return.

Currently, Elaina is back again to her normal work. She has been doing great so far and thanks to the sprinklers, her farm work time has been reduced significantly with the help of the automatic sprinklers. Due to this, Elaina mentally noted to herself to check the other blueprints and perhaps save up some FP for other purchases in the future as well.

At the moment, Elaina is currently fishing on the stream using the fishing rod given to her. She is still a beginner in fishing but so far, she managed to catch a few fish. She made sure to ask permission from the harvest goddess first to fish there as she didn’t want to think that the line with the worm as bait would be what she was offering to the local goddess.

The farm is currently lonely today and Elaina is the only one present at the moment due to Julia currently on an errand to buy some groceries in the market in the city. Being in solitude once again made Elaina think a bit about the future.

While her mind wandered through her imagination, all of a sudden, she suddenly heard a bell. Elaina’s little trance was interrupted as she returned to reality and looked around to look for the source of the ringing bell. She was quite sure that she wasn’t just hearing things.

Then...

Another ring from the bell echoed once again and this time, Elaina was listening closely. She grabbed her sword and immediately tried to pinpoint the sound around the farm but before she could even try to find where it was coming from, the source came to the farm itself.

A small carriage-like vehicle entered from the entrance to the forest and stopped on a space of the farm. It was being pulled by a hairy monster that looked like a lump of fur with legs. It is the first time Elaina has seen this creature but she is not intrigued by the creature but by the little carriage instead. The ringing bell also stopped as the hairy monster stopped pulling the little carriage.

The window that was closed before opens slightly and a faint silhouette of an entity starts to speak to Elaina.

"Hihi...would you look at that, a new occupant in this land? It’s been some time since I have seen someone live inside that old rickety house. Who would have thought I would see a pregnant woman take over the farm?"

Elaina immediately readies her sword as she assumes a combat stance. "Who are you? What are you doing here? And how did you know I am pregnant?"

"Hihi! Oh, dearie... don’t be alarmed. I don’t mean any harm and you don’t need to worry about why I know you are pregnant. With my all-seeing eyes, I am capable of seeing through many people, their lies, and their true identities. If you live with a profession as a merchant, this kind of ability is something that you will need someday."

"A merchant?" Elaina frowned, still her guard up.

"Oh yes, I am sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I am called The Wandering Merchant. I have no name to call, just call me Wandering Merchant. I travel around different realms from time to time to give deals to people. I buy and sell goods that might or might not be useful or catch your eye that you cannot buy or access normally. If you need something exotic or rare goods, contraband, or taboo objects, for the right price, I will fetch it for you. You just ask me, I am your guy."
