Chapter 359: Final Harvest Day In Spring
Chapter 359: Final Harvest Day In Spring
It seems like it was just yesterday that winter ended and Spring replaced the cold season, but we are now approaching the final days of spring. Trees have started to show signs of transitioning to the next season, and the heat is starting to increase as well.
Elaina has been so busy with various things that she has not realized how fast time has flown. And with the spring days racing to the final lap, comes the harvest day for all the crops and clearing the field for summer planting.
Like always, Elaina began preparing by wearing her clothes specially crafted for the times she would need to harvest plants. She only wears this during harvest times, so she has barely used it. Unless they are harvesting, and since most of the time, the ones who harvest the goods during regular days are the Feys, she does not necessarily need to be involved.
However, Elaina couldn’t afford to miss the final harvest days as this was the time she could check the status of the soil and whether some of the upcoming crops that she would be planting would be ideal to be planted or not. Depending on the status of the plants, it can sometimes hinder or break the cycle of their growth which makes some of them grow badly for the rest of the season. This is why Elaina has to manually check the farm after the final harvest and see whether the farm needs some rest before the new planting session begins or they can begin right away.
With her finished with her preparations, she was about to go when both Adelaide and Arthur woke up.
"Mom? No more sleep?" Arthur asked, still looking groggy. Elaina approached them and kissed their foreheads.
"Morning sweeties. Yes, no more sleep. Needed to head out and work since we will be busy."
"Is it time for the final harvests? Based on the changes in the weather, it seems seasons are about to shift soon," Adelaide said as she rubbed her eyes.
"Yes indeed. You sure know your stuff, Ade."
"I helped out on a farm once in my past life so I am a bit familiar with some stuff. Not sure what has advanced though, so there’s that," Adelaide said as she got out of bed.
"You waking up early? Why not sleep longer?" Elaina asked, surprised by Adelaide already moving out.
"No point sleeping more if I already am awake. And besides, I think it is time to help out on the farm as well. I might be small in stature right now, but at least I have some experience to use for. Good variety of stuff to do, I guess."
"Me too! Me too!" Arthur excitedly moves out of the bed as well, ecstatic about the work.
"Just so you know, Arthur, it’s not that fun doing the work, unlike playing. And we are not there to play," Elaina reminded him. She didn’t want to break the illusion of fun things to Arthur by making him do work like farm work.
"No worries about that, Mom. It seems that my brother doesn’t think your work to be boring. I have been stopping him many times before when you are at work that he wants to help out even though he still can barely walk before."
"Oh? This is the first time I have heard of it," Elaina was surprised.
"Of course since it’s only me and Arthur who knows about it. I stopped him before since he was still starting out on walking and he still stumbles here and there, making it a bit dangerous if Arthur decided to help out. But since it’s been a while and Arthur can handle himself fine now, I don’t see why he cannot join."
Elaina smiled. "Well, in that case, wear these clothes. These are specially made clothes for the two of you, given by your uncle. It is a bit loose but it is suitable for farm work. You two can go and help but don’t push yourselves too hard alright? If you guys think that you don’t want to help anymore, just get inside and ask Sister Julia to change clothes, alright?"
"Yes!" the two nodded in response.
Helping the two get changed, Elaina also prepared some sunscreen in them. With the heat outside and how long they will be staying under it, the two who have yet to experience much would need some protection from sunburn. With that done, the three went outside the room and were welcomed by Julia and Princess Margaux in the kitchen drinking coffee.
"Morning, Sis. Oh? That’s a rare sight to see. The two little ones are with their mother and wearing baggy clothes for once!" Julia was not expecting to see both Adelaide and Arthur in the attire either.
"They woke up when I was about to head out, saying they want to help out. Can’t deny them and it’s a good learning experience so I agreed."
"Oh my, that’s wonderful, Miss Elaina. You have two little assistants with you. Come you two! Let’s have some breakfast while we are at it," Princess Margaux beckoned the two which they followed and nodded.
"Breakfast early! Exciting!" Arthur said while swaying on his chair from side to side.
"Being that this is his first time doing this, it’s a new experience for him and a pleasant one I think," Julia smiled as she finished cooking the bacon and eggs and put it on the plates.
"Hearty breakfast before work! This is a great start to the day," Elaina grinned as she looked at the dish on the table.
"Of course. I know you are about to do the final harvest day, so might as well give you a good hearty breakfast. Cannot go wrong with it."
And so, the girls and boy have their breakfast together. The witch also joined in a bit later, making the breakfast a happy one.
After the event, Elaina and the kids went outside. The sun is already rising in the sky, breaking the darkness of dawn.
"Boss! We are ready...oh, it seems the kids are also going to be joining us as well?" Bam was surprised.
"Yes. They will be helping on the easy task and let them help on things they are curious about."
"Aye. Early chances to take part in this activity will allow them to hone and normalize this work in their system, boss. A good way to learn early!" Poe nodded.
"Indeed. Same with how we teach our kids at work. Now, they are happy and proud of it," Bam said as he looked at Joe and Ram who looked proud when Bam described them.
"Thanks for understanding. Now, shall we begin?"
And so, the group started with their individual job. The Faes worked on the big crops while Elaina and her twins handled the ground crops and smaller plants to work with the harvest. As expected, Adelaide is already an expert. Although some things seemed to be unfamiliar to her at first, she quickly got used to it and adapted to it.
Arthur on the other hand is mimicking the work. He is observing at first and once he is sure of the action, he will start to follow suit and do the same, allowing Elaina to see firsthand what Adelaide was talking about Arthur’s exceptional learning skills.
Elaina also took advantage of this to teach the two some new knowledge regarding some stuff on the farm. Even Ade is curious listened carefully with Arthur and helped out all the way.
Surprisingly, contrary to what Elaina expected, the two lasted quite long with the work. Even when Elaina urges them to have some rest, the two continue to do the work, making Elaina confused and a bit worried. They are still kids after all.
Thankfully, the long-awaited break arrived and Julia and Princess Margaux came out carrying plates of cookies and drinks. Seeing both the snacks, Adelaide and Arthur finally stopped their work altogether and welcomed the two carrying the snacks.
"Careful you two! And wash your hands first before eating!" Elaina shouted to them and she heard a faint "yes" from the two of them.
"How fast time passes by, right boss?" Poe smiled as she looked at the two kids playing with each other while washing their hands.
"Indeed. I still remember them to be small babies in my arms crying or sleeping," Elaina smiled as she remembered her nostalgia for her twins’ infant days.
"Right? Even though you are there when they are growing, you won’t eventually see the changes of them until they show it. Glad to know that you are experiencing the joy as well," Poe said.
"Yes indeed."
"Alright, let’s go take a break. We still have plenty of stuff to do after all."
Elaina nodded and dropped her tools. She hoped things would continue this way, for a very long time. For Elaina, she will ensure things will remain peaceful and she will make sure things will not be destroyed by any means. As long as she is still breathing, she will ensure to protect the home that she swore to keep away from harm.
