Chapter 341: Food Buffs
Chapter 341: Food Buffs
BURP!
Elaina’s eyes are tearing up not because of how bad the food tasted. The food’s taste is good enough, but the smell was something else. If one wanted to eat a good food, one should count on the smell to make it appetizing but if a food has a very bad smell in the first place, one would not enjoy the food.
Eating the failed dish she conjured just now gave her various conflicting emotions and for once, she didn’t know how to react to it. The taste was not bad, but the visuals and the smell alone are a big turn off. Her breath seems to even have a gotten some of that bad smell as well.
She already finished eating the cooking but since the smell was bad, she quickly went to the sink and started brushing her teeth and gargling some mouth wash to freshen her mouth once more. She can’t help but think on the food she just ate. if it was so bad in smell, how come she continued eating it?
There is only one answer. She didn’t want to waste the food.
For Elaina, she likes to cook but she is someone who does experimental cooking. She usually does cook established recipes instead of cooking on her own. And so, if she does cook something, she always makes sure that the food she is cooking will not fail. Of course, it was an unavoidable thing, but still, considering that Elaina wanted to still cook, she will have to eventually get used to failures.
So seeing a food that is a failure but can still be eaten, Elaina is still thinking with her principles. Yes, that cooking might be garbage, but it can still be eaten. There is no need for her to throw it away.
After her final gargle of mouth wash and making sure that the smell is no longer present, Elaina once again inspected the dish she just made. Although it won’t be recorded in the recipe book, one of the features of the almanac after she unlocked the cooking pages was the ability to check the food she created and see what she did and what she did wrong. It is a way for Elaina to fully master a dish and rightfully correct all the wrong things she have done in the process.
Not only that, but the page also reveals the quality of the dish, the name of the dish and its ingredients. It could be treated like a post cooking results.
The reason she wanted to look at the cooking result was not because she wanted to see what went wrong in that cooking and how it became somehow palatable as those things are due to the effects of the mastery skill. What made Elaina check the post cooking results is due to how every single spoonful of that failed dish, she somehow feel a weird feeling of being energized. It was like she was drinking some sort of energizing tonic for once that she is not sure whether that was intended to be a feeling she was supposed to feel while eating that thing.
Opening it, the cooking result was indeed displayed before Elaina. It even displayed why the dish became a failure and why it wasn’t supposed to be a good dish to be registered to the cookbook page. However, one thing caught Elaina’s eye. It was something that Elaina have not seen before in the previous cooking result pages, making her immediately notice it right away.
"Energizer?"
A term that she wasn’t familiar. Thankfully, it seems the explanation was also present, allowing Elaina to know what it was.
Energizer is an effect addon from various foods that would allow one to feel the burst of energy when eating or drinking them. One sip or one spoonful is enough to help energize a person deprived from sleep.
Elaina didn’t expect the effects at all. It might seem like nothing but just by the explanation alone, Elaina can confirm that the energizer effect is none other than the effects of caffeine.
So...why is that effect applied to a failed dish? Sure, one would feel alive after eating that thing due to the bad things that come after eating it, not because of the effect itself. So why? Elaina scratched her head in confusion as to why somehow it happened.
That’s when Elaina suddenly remembered something that she seemed to have missed out when she looked the skill for the first time. It was a line present in the Level 2 Cooking Mastery description.
"10% chance to trigger a unique buff that will be added to the dish which if consumed by someone, the buff will be applied to them."
She have read past of it and did not think too much of it, but now that she have read the description again, she got a bit confused on what this actually do.
"A unique buff? Is it similar to the buff received from magic casters to support people in a fight?" Elaina scratches her head. As much as she have a few ideas of buffs, she didn’t have much knowledge to it. She knows it was some kind of effect that enhances something, hence she knows that the cooking mastery level 1 is kind of a buff. But what is a unique buff?
That’s when the Goddess of Cooking suddenly answered Elaina’s lingering question.
"[A unique buff is just a fancy name for buffs that are can be cast using magic by magicians and supporters. It is something that potions have and even a few items possess.]"
"Huh? Goddess of Cooking?"
"[Hello, Miss Farmer. I didn’t expect to see you already snag the level 2 of cooking mastery. Seeing you achieve that much in a short time, it makes me a bit proud even though I barely did anything.]" the Goddess of Cooking said, seemingly proud on Elaina’s current achievement.
"No, no. I wouldn’t even have this kind of opportunity in the first place without the help of your power in any shape or form. In short, things are still due to your help that I managed to achieve this kind of praise."
"[You are exaggerating. I just gave you the opportunity to start and seeing your passion, I can’t help but agree that your help is something that I would be really happy to receive in the future. Therefore, don’t think about it and continue with what you are doing. Anyways, enough of that, you are confused on this thing right?]"
"Yes. What does this mean?"
"[As you can see, there are some potions out there in the human world that can give temporary buffs when consumed. Think of it as something that adventurers use when they face enemies that are stronger than them. To power themselves up, they needed something that would give them those boosts. Normally, regular supporters and sometimes magicians will cast those spells and will allow the target to receive the spell and gain the buff temporarily. However, since those people are not always available, the Goddess of Medicine gave the knowledge related to potion crafting that would allow for those potions to get some sort of effect. The most common thing a potion has would be the "Enhance healing percentage" buff. Considering that the potions are easy to get, these potions are easily sold out.]
"Then since it is applied on those potions, you also think of putting it on foods, does that mean it works the same way as I think it is?"
"[Yes. The a dish with that a unique buff will act the same way as those magic potions. And those effects will only take effect once it was eaten. However, compared to the short durations of the potions, these foods that are cooked and have those unique buffs are something that would last longer than a regular potion.]"
Elaina soon understood the way the ability she have works. Considering that the food she made just now had the effect of "Energize", it was now she properly understood as to why she was getting the feeling that she have been getting energized by something and she doesn’t feel tired.
"But it said 10 percent here, which means all of the food that I will cook in the future will soon gain the ability to get those buffs if the 10 percent somehow land?" Elaina asked, seemingly excited.
"Yes. And be aware that even though you can trigger these buffs, the buffs that will be applied on the dish will be random so if you think you wanted to tailor a specific buff, then perhaps you should study more on how to do that."
A random unique buff that will be only triggered with 10 percent probability, the benefits are big...but she didn’t have the specifics on how to make this skill work. But maybe, perhaps in the future once her mastery level increase, then maybe...those chances will become a guarantee instead of a gambling tactic.
