Chapter 313: Slime Hutch

One of the abilities of the slimes is the merge ability or the ability to combine with one another to create a bigger slime. They might be big right now but they don’t continue to remain as one and will detach back to their smaller bodies once again after some time. According to the almanac’s bestiary page which is part of the Goddess of Taming’s book page, slimes do not want to last long enough to merge together due to their individual cores merging together if they are merged as one, and the slimes, they don’t want to lose their individuality and become a single entity. They only use this tactic to scare other enemies like their local predators and adventurers who are just starting and would be afraid to deal with bigger monsters.

And now, that seems to be the case with the slime that we are seeing right now.

"What is going on? Princess? Why did they suddenly merge?!" Julia is now readying herself to battle as the slime now appears menacing.

"It seems the talks with the other slimes didn’t work! They thought that it was our fault that their master became like this and this little one is now branded as the traitor!" Princess Margaux explained as she translated the voice of the little slime.

"Ugh, Princess! Why you didn’t translate sooner!" Julia quickly scooped the little slime and put it on her shoulder before she assumed a battle stance.

"Sorry...I just got distracted a lot since it was my first time translating slime language," Princess Margaux gave out a dry laugh as she felt awkward for not preventing this event from happening.

Elaina decided to intervene so that the two would no longer banter with one another while there was a problem. "Enough with that, girls. Our main priority is to fend off ourselves and prevent ourselves from killing the slimes. They are not hostile for the sake of being hostile. They are just defending their master so only make sure to defend on their attacks," Elaina said as she also ready her sword for the battle.

"Ugh...I hate fighting these guys, their sticky substances are just hard to remove," Julia muttered to herself as she remembered her experience when she followed Elaina in the mines where she ended up fighting a bunch of slimes just to follow Elaina.

As the two groups are about to attack...

"Stop what you are doing, my little darlings."

An imposing voice stopped the slimes from moving and turned to look at the source, revealing that the witch who collapsed after the transfer was now awake. She is still pale but it seems she recovered enough mana to awaken from her slumber just now and stop the two groups from clashing one another.

"Whew...I guess we have dodged a bullet there," Julia sighed in relief and slumped to the floor with an exhausted face.

...

...

...

In the end, the slimes that were about to attack immediately understood everything the moment the witch explained the situation. The slimes then fission themselves separating from one another. One that Elaina have not seen before unless she counts the time she sliced and diced a few big slimes that became smaller slimes in the process back in the mines.

"Sorry about that guys, the slimes are just overprotective of me because of all the things I have experienced in the past. Without them, I would have died back then. And whenever something harmful comes to me, they immediately come to my rescue which is why they are not going to go easy if they wanted to fight."

"No wonder they go all out already even though we are trying to reason out with them. The smaller slime that you send out with Julia earlier even failed to convince them and are even threatening the little slime as a traitor," Princess Margaux revealed as everyone looked at the little slime who seemed to be relieved that the situation didn’t escalate further.

"Sorry about that. If the little ones think together, even this little guy can’t stop them."

Elaina looked at the witch and examined her face. She still looks pale.

"Are you sure you are already okay? Although it is reassuring now that you are awake, we can’t even be too sure that you are already fine. You look too pale in your complexion, it is kinda worrisome."

"Haha, no worries. Although I would look like this now, I wouldn’t look like a pale ghost after a while. It is a side effect of losing a lot of mana in one go and then collapsing in the process. I messed up with my calculations and thought that my mana reserves were enough. I didn’t even use up any mana catalyst to at least handle the brunt of mana usage. Which drained a lot of my mana. Still glad that everything worked out fine and the house arrived in one piece."

Julia who is silent for a while then asked the witch as something seems to be bothering her mind.

"By the way, I have a question."

"Hmm? What is it?"

"Where do you even keep the slimes? Slimes leave in caves or dark and damp places that it is kind of impossible to see them living inside your home considering it is neither damp nor dark."

"Ah, I have a few slime hutches in the area. You can see them outside. They stay there majority of the time."

"Slime hutch?"

Elaina heard that term from the Goddess of Taming and according to Jacob, he also built one and just to contact him if Elaina wanted to. It is the equivalent building for the slimes that acts as its house just like how it makes sense to use coops for chickens and a barn for cows, sheep, and other animals like goats and pigs.

"I built them myself as a way to pass the time back when growing herbs became too stale for me. Since there are rarely any animals in the deep woods and most of them are just monsters, the only monsters I managed to tame were the slimes that soon lived inside the slime hutches that I made. I am not sure if it was the slime hutch that most people make nowadays but since the slimes live on them just fine, I think I did a great job."

The witch then escorted them to the so-called slime hutch. What they saw were small little buildings that became little homes for the slimes. It is bigger than a regular coop but instead of housing a chicken, it houses slimes.

Princess Margaux shook her head when she saw the slime hutches that the witch made.

"These aren’t slime hutches in the slightest, Miss Witch. Although the slimes seem to be living here just fine, they aren’t slime hutches and more like little coops that slimes made a home into. You see, I have seen actual slime hutches before when I was with my Father who visited a friend who also sells goods related to slimes as some of the goods that are produced by slimes are considered as delicacy foods. Slime hutches are much bigger, and looked like an actual medium house for commoners. Inside of the slime hutches simulates a cave’s atmosphere, making them a good breeding ground for slimes where they would produce slime eggs that can be used in a variety of recipes and they even treat the eggs themselves as artisan products," Princess Margaux explained.

"Is that how it is? Then what I made for them is not really what we consider a slime hutch. I am the only one calling these little buildings as slime hutch?"

"Yeah. I think so. But I wouldn’t blame you considering you have been alone for quite too long that not knowing what a slime hutch is is not a big problem. There are even a few people in the modern age who didn’t know about slime hutches as well or the delicacies slime can give. Since you tamed slimes and they started living in your little coops, you will eventually mistake them for the slime hutches instead," Julia explained.

"There are people who don’t know slime hutches existed?" the witch was surprised.

The three girls nodded though one is hesitant to nod along and that is Elaina. If not for the Goddess of Taming informing her that slimes can be tamed and be housed in slime hutches, even she would be considered ignorant. Thankfully, she learned in advance. Which is why she is a bit hesitant to reveal that it wasn’t that long ago that she learned about this matter.

"Anyways, we should worry about these slime hutches later since the slimes seem to be not complaining in any way. Anyways, I think you should have a good rest now, Miss Witch. Considering the loss of your mana not too long ago, not resting would just overstrain your body. It’s best to have a good rest for a while," Elaina suggested.

Since the witch is now safe, Elaina and the girls returned to their houses and would visit the witch soon in the morning one thing is certain for Elaina. A new ally is now here with her.
