A Single Mother's Farm of the Gods
Chapter 136: The Summer Nights

Chapter 136: The Summer Nights

Since there will be the Fireworks festival that will be happening the next night, Elaina decided to take it easy for a while until tomorrow. Now that the upcoming festival will be held late at night, she thinks that she should take it easy for a while and lessen her overall work. It is not that she is getting lazy, she just wants to relax for a bit and have an easy time. After all, if a person just keeps on working without any sort of rest, then things might go grim in the process. She left the work to the Feys by giving them twice the amount of pay they would receive every day.

Right now, despite Elaina relaxing, she is still not fully relaxed and is currently spending her time fishing on the stream.

"I thought you would be relaxing? Why are you even fishing right now?" the Harvest Goddess asked as she rocked baby Mier to sleep.

"Eh, I am still relaxing. Fishing is a relaxing task you know? And I also wanted to slowly fill up the fishing catalog as well. There is nothing wrong with what I am doing. I should be the one who should be asking you. This is pretty rare for you to be the one doing the task of making a baby sleep. You usually just go and lie down while eating and relaxing, what about Mier’s Mother?" Elaina asked curious as to what was currently happening with the merfolk that the Harvest Goddess accepted in her domain.

"She is working hard on my domain. She is very eager to pay back all of what I have done for her baby and for me taking them in. She felt guilty if she couldn’t somehow pay me for everything."

"And you gave her work?"

"Yep. Although it wasn’t tough work, it would take a while for her to be done with it. So in the meantime, I am the one currently babysitting this baby. Even though this shouldn’t be my job, well, what can I do?"

"Well, you took that job without a second of hesitation then you deal with it, of course."

The Harvest Goddess said nothing else as the baby finally fell asleep.

"Alright then, I will go back to my realm. If you plan to drop some offering or something to ask me, just do the usual, alright?" the Harvest Goddess then dived back into the water and disappeared.

"Looks like she didn’t realize that she is slowly awakening her parental side."

Elaina can only smile at the slow change of the Harvest Goddess. Elaina continued to fish for a while until the sun set on the horizon. If the summer days are very hot, the moment the day shifts to the night, the air becomes cold and chilly. Perhaps this is the way the world is currently "sweating" and cooling off from the whole day’s sweltering heat.

After gathering all of the fish she caught so far, Elaina returned to the farmhouse and started to prepare dinner for everyone. Tomorrow is gonna be another day.

...

The next day, Elaina did the same thing as yesterday except watering the crops and caring for them for a while before relaxing for the rest of the day. Instead of fishing, Elaina just decided to remain on the patio and observe the massive farm that she still can’t believe to be hers now. She is enjoying the work that is being done by the Feys as they move around the field with extreme professionalism. Elaina is lucky that the Fey decided to ask her to hire them, or else, she will have to resort to Julia doing all of the work while she also does her own set of works as well.

Elaina continued to observe the farm until she didn’t realize that she slowly drifted to sleep.

"Sis? Hey Sis...Wake up."

"H-huh?" Elaina rubs her eyes as she slowly tries to adjust her vision to her surroundings.

"You are finally awake, Sis. That took some time before you fully awakened," Julia said as she wiped off her sweat.

"Eh? I fell asleep?" Elaina just realized that point after she finally adjusted her eyes to her surroundings.

"Looks like the fatigue has dawned on you sis that you didn’t realize you fell asleep."

"I guess. I mean, I feel refreshed after that little nap that I just did just now."

Elaina then looked around and noticed that the surroundings were getting dark already.

"I already prepared dinner, Sis. So you don’t need to worry about the food. Princess Margaux and Zaza are waiting for us at the moment."

"Right...tonight is the day of the Fireworks festival," Elaina stretched her arms.

"Yes. I suggest eating lightly tonight Sis. After all, we might be eating a lot of food later on since Guy will be the one cooking for free."

Elaina then remembered about that bit and she felt energized hearing that. "Yeah. Let’s go."

The two girls chatted as they entered the farmhouse, not aware that tonight would be the night that Elaina would never forget. At the moment, things are still innocent. But later, it will be a literal bloodbath.

...

After their preparations, the three went on their way to the beach. This is the first time that the three ventured out to the town at night like this. At first, they thought it would be gloomy and dark but contrary to their expectations, it seems the festival is currently blooming quite well and the nighttime became a bit lively.

Villagers are gathering around with both friends and families gathered at one another. They even saw a few familiar faces currently attending the fireworks festival.

As Elaina is about to head to the stall that guy is cooking, she sees Troy currently enjoying his time with none other than Doctor Fey. Elaina was surprised at first but she didn’t find it strange. After all, she has seen signs of her brother currently hinting at his feelings for the doctor.

Instead of crashing and disturbing their "date", Elaina decided to just leave them alone and go on a different way to avoid disturbing the happy scene. Elaina also made sure that the two girls didn’t accidentally ruin the setting they had set up for themselves as these two might be a bit out of the loop at the moment and she didn’t want them to be the ones who would cause the missed opportunity from happening.

They decided to just move on the side when Marigold saw them.

"Ah, Elaina and the girls! Good evening and thanks for coming tonight to witness the fireworks festival. I am delighted that you guys find the time to squeeze a bit of time to dedicate to this event."

"Good evening Mayor!" the two girls greeted.

"Good evening, Mrs. Marigold. I didn’t know that there would be many people going to view the fireworks festival," Elaina said as she looked around the beach where every area is filled with people busy with their families and loved ones.

"Yes. Although the festival is not that well known, we do our best to hold it every year as a way of celebration. You can say that this is something we usually do to justify a gathering with every farmer busy with their farm life for a day or whole night but soon it became a tradition to the point that everyone is looking forward to it."

"So this was just a normal tradition that soon got converted into a festival at some point?" Elaina asked.

"Something like that. Back then, we didn’t have fireworks to fire into the sky like now but we just have some firecrackers and some sprinkler lighters to enjoy. Years pass by and now, instead of those things, we are now enjoying the fireworks display that is going to become a spectacle in the sky for a few hours."

Marigold pointed over to the little edge of the water where a few small cannons were deployed, ready to blow their contents.

"Cannons?"

"They are cannons, right? But thankfully for everyone, this is a modified one that is used to launch fireworks into the air. It is still kind of a cannon, but it is more tame and safe compared to original cannons. Anyway, it seems that the process is about to begin at any moment. You girls should head to a good place and grab some food at Guy’s stall. Trust me, eating something great while watching fireworks feels different."

Elaina smiled and nodded as they all headed and grabbed some food to eat.

It took some time before the countdown began. Seeing almost everybody participating in the countdown, this event is pretty much a very usual thing to happen every year and right now, everyone is enjoying the current thing.

But while she is going to enjoy the situation and let the festivities soak in, Elaina’s happy side is immediately replaced with anger and concern with a tad bit of fear added to her body. Julia calls at Elaina for the sudden reasoning that Julia felt tense.

"Sis, it seems someone has forcibly entered the farm’s perimeter and torn a little bit of the powers that I used to protect the place!"
