Chapter 134: Brand New Seeds And Planting Corn

A new day, and a brand new time to do some work. Elaina stretches her hands in the air as she readies herself for her daily routine. Except that this time around, it seems the God of Farming has a new batch of seeds he wants Elaina to try.

"Only two new seeds?" Elaina asked.

"[I only made two as summer has a lot of crops that grow frequently. In case these plants become good to use, it might be unbalanced for me to increase more summer-only seeds when I can just choose another seasonal seed to grow instead.]" the God of Farming explained.

"I see. You are right that there are lots of different crops that grow at a peak during summertime while some can survive the changing seasons where spring crops can survive summer or summer crops that can survive autumn. I don’t mind a lot of them but since you are planning to spread out the seeds in the future once you finish your final tweaks, then you need to balance it out."

"[Which is why I wanted you to test it out if it is growing well or it doesn’t work too well. I am bound to make mistakes as well.]"

"A trial and error, huh? Well, I hope this new crop you are introducing would be much easier to know if they are already ripe or not. It would have been fine if there was some sort of indicator to know about it," Elaina complained as she had to trouble herself to test the new crops all by herself, while also determining whether the crop was already ripe for the picking or she was too early.

"[Don’t complain, Elaina. It is part of the challenge to also find the hidden side of the fruit you are eating. After all, some fruits are very good to eat while they are still not ripe while some lose their charm and taste when they become ripe. You can say that due to the work of humanity, crops, and plants have various uses in today’s age and expanded the possibilities of cooking.]"

Elaina can’t refute the God of Farming about it. What he said is indeed true. If not for the people who tested these foods back in the day, no one would determine the exact usage of these fruits, how they are much better when they are still not ripe, and how they are much more viable to be eaten in cooking instead of eating it raw and many other things. It is all trial and error that made the food industry thrive further.

"Alright, I think I got your point. It seems I just got used to the little things where I already know when to harvest or consume something."

"[It’s fine. Anyway, I hope you give constructive criticism on each plant. I don’t want sugarcoated comments, alright? The first batch of seeds I gave to you during spring was a success and some of your criticisms there are valid I can get to use that as a way to fully improve the said plant without problems.]"

"Gotcha. Still the same thing to do if I failed to make it grow, right? Check the ledger again to deliver another seed?"

"[Yes. I didn’t change it. Some bad circumstances happen from time to time after all. It is better to have that as some sort of backup plan.]"

Elaina nodded and carried the two seeds with her. The two seeds have a very different shape compared to most of what she knows as seeds. But before that, she decided to name the two seeds temporary names, the seed that has a shiny, round surface that looks like a miniature marble is called the SU01. The second seed has a spiky exterior as well as some hairs growing, Elaina calls it the SU02. She didn’t forget to put the details of both seeds as well to ensure she didn’t forget which seed was which.

As usual, Elaina decided to use the former area where she planted the previous spring’s experimental crops and let both the seeds grow there. It’s easier to find and it is one of the places that she knows where she can safely test out every single experimental plant.

Elaina had to ask the Feys for help in digging a little hole for both seeds for her to plant since it was getting harder to crouch now that her belly was growing more. After giving it some water, Elaina’s job for now with the two new seeds is done. Now, she just needed to wait for the results to come soon.

Now that the summer crops she had were stabilized and growing properly, Elaina decided that it was time to grow new crops while summer was still blazing on. With the field being cleaned, Elaina can use another plot of the area to be used for planting new crops once again.

Right now, she is currently in a little meeting with the Feys. Bam and Poe are the ones who are attending while their children continue to clear out the area.

"So you plan to plant new crops in the newly cleaned-up area?" Bam asked.

"Yes. The crops we had were fine but we needed more variety of crops to grow in the process. Do you guys have any suggestions?"

"How about planting some wheat? I heard it is quite in demand to the people and it is one of the main things that people needed," Poe suggested.

"Wheat huh? It is viable indeed but I don’t think we have the means to process wheat into something we can use. It would be great if we had mills that would allow us to process the wheat that is used for cooking and consumption. But since we don’t have them and lack even the money and materials to build them. It is viable but I think it is a lot better to plant something else that doesn’t need to be processed after and is fine as is," Elaina declined the wheat growing.

"Then what about the corn? Although it is necessary to have one as well, I think it is viable since we can still consume corn without the need for a mill. The corn is also viable as a source of fuel as well," Bam suggested.

"Corn huh? I think that was a fine idea. Corn is also good without the need to be processed in the mill. And if processed in the mill, it will have different usage as well. Not only that but it is easy to grow and the amount of stuff we can receive during harvest is not a joke either."

"Yeah. And we might even be able to convert one into popcorn!" Bam enthusiastically said.

"Aren’t popcorns cultivated to become one? After all, not all corn can become popcorn," Elaina breaks the news.

"Was it?" Bam frowned.

"Yeah. I had the initial thought like you before as well until I learned that popcorns came from a different kind of corn that is specifically functioning as something to be used popcorn."

"Seriously? And here I thought all corn could become popcorn. I heard it is one of the treats that humans like to eat since it is an entirely different way to enjoy corn."

"We can still plant those popcorn-specific corns, you know? We just needed to get the seeds and buy a few of them alongside the normal corn seeds that don’t become popcorn."

Elaina’s mind also clicked after realizing it as well. If she grows the corn that becomes popcorn, it will be counted as she has cooked a dish in the process and that is something she wanted to happen. Accumulation of dishes cooked and she will be able to fully use this chance to unlock the cooking page in the almanac as well.

"So it is the corn then? Any suggestions?"

The two shook their head. "I think it is better to have the corn only for now. We shouldn’t overwhelm ourselves and plant more than what we can chew," Poe suggested.

"You are right. We also needed to make some profit as well so I think we can use that. Then please prepare the cleaned area and start tilling the soil over there. I will be checking in the market for any seeds related to corn."

The two nodded in response. "We will relay this information to our children and start the work right away."

Elaina nodded and the two Fey went straight to work. Elaina already knew that the ledger had those seeds but she didn’t want to use them and instead decided that it was a much better choice to find one in the market. After all, she felt that it just needed to be fair and experience the usual experience of growing corn instead of something the God of Farming could provide easily.

"Alright. Time to buy some seeds!"

Morning came and on the other side of the Darcero Kingdom, a lone boat had finally arrived from a long trip.
