Chapter 107: Fairy In Distress

The gold has been paid, and the ring and cage containing a small fairy are now Elaina’s property. The Wandering Merchant tries to give Elaina more suggestions for purchase. Still, Elaina shakes her head as she is now out of money and the other items are something that didn’t catch Elaina’s interest or are just plain expensive for her to buy.

With the two purchases finalized, Elaina immediately headed inside the house to examine the cage closely and see whether she could even crack it open by herself. If she can’t do it, then she can just ask Julia or perhaps even the Harvest Goddess to open it.

...

...

...

The little fairy can feel her cage shake a bit while she is inside the cage. She didn’t dare open her eyes even once. She is afraid of what she will see but that is not the only factor she is not opening her eyes. She is also tired and hungry for a while now that her body is no longer responding and her remaining energy is just something she is conserving to ensure that she won’t die from starvation.

After a while, she felt the surroundings feel warm and the smell of nature suddenly wafted through her nose. She can hear a few voices talking but because she is too tired and is currently experiencing her consciousness fading in and out, she cannot properly understand what the people are talking about.

It didn’t take long for her to hear the noise of coins jingling which meant that someone had already purchased the cage that contained her. She might have closed her eyes and she is barely aware of what is happening, she is sure about it just based on the coins itself.

She already prepared for everything especially after she was captured. Although she received several injuries after her capture and lost a lot of her memories, she still knows the situation she is in and how grave it is.

Surrendering to her fate, the little fairy waited for her final time.

...

...

...

Elaina frowned as she looked at the lock of the cage. It wasn’t very conflicting of a lock and she had seen it many times to be used as locked for chests and some important places with some valuable items. Still, this is one of the locks that she is confident in lockpicking. Her experience in doing this many times in the past has been ingrained in her hands and she can proudly claim herself as an expert in opening locks using lockpicks.

And yet...she failed at opening this one particular lock. She tried repeatedly to see it open but for some reason, she couldn’t even shake the lock at all. She glanced at it a few times but she couldn’t see any tamper nor signs of magic spells that prevented the lock from even opening. She might not be magically gifted in terms of magical prowess, but Elaina has experience in magic using tools so she knows the basic knowledge about it, especially in locks. However, this lock just lacked those things that make the lock use some magic.

"If this lock is not locked by something from magic, then this lock is just specifically designed to not open from any lockpicking techniques? Guess I didn’t know about that."

Elaina sighed and gave up trying to pick the lock off of the cage. She stared at it for a few seconds before she glanced at the sword currently leaning on the table and then back to the lock. After a while, she thinks of something that she can try out.

"If this doesn’t work out, perhaps asking Julia or even the gods for help might do the trick."

Grabbing her sword, she entered a combat stance. Although it is now getting harder to enter a combat stance now that her belly is slowly growing big, she decided to shift her stance to adapt to her growing belly. She focused on the lock while holding the sheath of the sword and the hilt. In one swift stroke, she draws her sword and slices through the lock. She felt the lock offer no resistance as she cut it down in one sweep.

As soon as her blade passed through the lock, the locked lock clanged open as it got destroyed by the slash that Elaina did.

"Hah...seems like my intuition is right. This lock is just faulty which is why even when I try to open it, it fails immediately."

Picking and examining the lock, she realized why it wasn’t opening at all. The lock itself has jammed the shank deep into the locking bar and it seems to be stuck there. So she has been trying to lockpick a faulty lock since the very beginning.

Since the lock is now destroyed, the gate is now open. Without hesitation, Elaina opened the cage and called to the little fairy inside.

"Little fairy, open your eyes. You are free now."

Elaina waited for a bit but the fairy remained motionless. She examined the motionless fairy to make sure she was not dead and sighed in relief seeing she was not before resuming her calls for the the fairy to wake up.

Elaina is not sure what is currently going on with the fairy but she can see that the fairy is still alive so there are only three reasons why the little fairy has yet to open her eyes. One is because she is too injured and she can’t open her eyes even if she wants to. She needed tending before she would recover. The second reason, she is hungry and she is exhausted, which results in her having no energy to do anything. As for the final reason, she just refuses to wake up at all. Either one of those reasons or perhaps all of them.

"No choice then," Elaina sighed and grabbed the little basket that placed some fo the harvested fruits on the table. It contains the strawberries and the EX01. The EX02 is also in there and despite knowing that it is something bitter and disgusting to eat, Elaina put it there to ensure that she can still receive some observations and see for herself if there are still further observation logs that she didn’t know about it.

She placed the basket into the entrance of the cage and left the cage alone as she prepared to get something that she could use to help tend the wounds on the little fairy. Despite being small, the wounds she currently has are big and worse to look at. Elaina is worried it might get infected as a result if not tended to for long.

"If you have the remaining energy to push yourself, go and use it and eat food. Don’t worry, it is not poisonous," Elaina said before leaving.

She hopes that by the time she returns, the little fairy might have the energy to even stand up.

...

...

...

Everything went quiet. The fairy has been feeling distressed since earlier. She heard various noises and her instincts were telling her that she shouldn’t move or else, she would die. Despite that, she still couldn’t do anything as she still felt all her energy was exhausted.

Then, she heard the voice of a woman speak as something seemed to be put near the cage.

"If you have the remaining energy to push yourself, go and use it and eat food. Don’t worry, it is not poisonous," the voice of the woman echoed in her ears before it went quiet once more.

She is not sure if it is safe to open her eyes. However, the voice earlier has said it already and she is hungry that even if it is a trap, she is willing to eat something to ensure that the pain in her stomach would go away.

As soon as she opened her eyes, the very first thing she saw was the open cage with a basket full of fruits currently free for grabs. She then looked around to ensure her safety.

So far, there is nothing that would endanger her life at all but she is still wary since the surroundings are nowhere she feels familiar at all. But now that she confirmed that there were no threats or immediate danger present, she slowly walked up to the basket and grabbed the nearest fruit that was currently within her view, the EX02.

It’s the first time she has seen this thing in her hands before. The EX02 is no longer inside the peanut-like shell and is already peeled off them and only their big circle "nuts" are up for grabs. Getting two of them, each on her small hands, she is ready to start eating. She sat down and without hesitation, she bit down the "nut" and the first thing that registered through her face was none other than...

Disgust.

"This...is the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten in my life."

However, because of her hunger, she didn’t want to be picky. She didn’t stop eating despite the disgusting taste. And to her surprise, despite the disgusting taste of the thing, it is somehow giving her enough that she feels like she is getting stuffed. However, since she knows that she has barely eaten anything, she knows that feeling is temporary. She needed to eat more.

Looking at the little "nut" in front of her, she steeled herself and bit at it once again. Perhaps the second bite might be much better and the bitterness will soon disappear once she gets used to it. With a quick bite, her hands put the little "nut" into her mouth.

CRUNCH!

"BLERGH..."
